Green is in charge of the meat market during the absence of Henry Nelson at Deadwood. The Old Settlers and Old Soldiers Reunion of Lyman county is being held at Murdo today aod to morrow. The Wood and Butt* Valley bail teams will play a matched game on the locol diamond next Sunday after- noon. Martin Anderson aud wife, Henry Anderson aud sister Miss Carrie are attending U. S. Court at Deadwood this week. The Wood base ball team will go to Carter on the Glorious Fourth aud play a matched game with the Crystal Springs team. Scott Merrill is taking in the Home steaders picnic at White River aud the Old Soldiers and Old Settlers Re- union at Murdo this week. Errick Schlaikjer aud son from near Carter were in town a short time Tuesday on their way to White River They returned Wednesday. Quite a number of Indians are camped about town, this week. We understand they are makeing arrange ments to celebrate the Glorious Fourth While takeing blood tests at the slaughter house Tuesday Dr. Griffin was kicked between the eyes by a mare. Dr. says he saw stars for a while. B. H. Watson, district exchange manager for the Nebraska Telephone Co., of Gregory, accompanied by his wife were business callers in Wood, Tuesday. The Wood Mercantile Co., put up a neat canvess awning in front of their store the first of the week, which adds greatly to the appearance of that establishment* Win. Becker left Tuesday morning for White River, from there he goes to Murdo where he boards the train for Scotland, S. D., to visit with friends. He expects to be gone about ten days. Kenneth Mellott and his crew of haymakers ou Tuesday finished har- vesting the first crop of alfalfa on the Wood ranch north of town. The crop was au exceptionally heavy one this season. Theo. Fibn, Henry Nelson, Geo. Howard and John Atkinson went to Valentine, Nebraska, Monday, where they boarded the train for Deadwood, there to attend the United States District court. Edward Pi than, of Winner, repre- senting the United States Annuity and Life Insurance Co., was here Fri- da/ making settlement on a polio/ that the late John Jordan carried on his life in thnt company. jv * ¦ STRAYED Light colored gray mare, weight 1200 to 1300, about 8 years old, no brands. When last seen had halter on with 20 feet of rope. $6.00 reward will be paid for return. First State Bank, Wood, S. D. 19-tf Carter Takes Another From Wood. The Carter base ball team came to Wood, Sunday accompanied by a good bunch of rooters from that me- tropolis and proceeded to win another game from the Wood team on the local diamond by a score of 9 to 16. There was a good crowd iu attend- ance and judging from the rootiug and yelling that was done by those who witnessed the game all enjoyed the sport. The home boys made a better showing at this game than they did at the first game they played with Carter and it is our guess that if they play one or two more games with the Carter bunch they will finally get their hides yet. Annual School Meeting. The annual school meeting was held here at the school building Tuesday afternoon. J. T. Hocking was re-elec ted to the position of clerk. S. A. Hill, chairman of the board, tendered his resignation and D. G. Miller was elected to fill the vacancy. It was de cided to have a nine months term of school in Wood, and the length of the term in the country schools was left optional with the Board. The Board was instructed to make a tax levy sufficient to raise $2,000 for school purposes the coming year. The District was found to be in very good financial condition and with the increased valuation of the taxable property in the District there ic no doubt but that the tax levy for sohool purposes in this district will be ma- terially reduced this year. The at- tendance at the meeting was com- paratively small in numbers and every thing was harmonious. This is the brides month —likewise the Junebug's. Some men s minds are smalfer than a chiggsr, and dont create half as much stir. A round up of Bad Nation mares is here this week while Dr. Griffin is kept quite busy taking blood tests. We understand the returns received by the Doctor thu* far from the De- partment, places a death sentence on some sixty head of mares. Remember Rev. Keepers will preach at the school house in Wood next Sunday both morning and evening. The Rev. will probably give his sec- oud lecture on the five kingdoms on this date. You should uot fail to at- tend the?e services. Leslie G. Fox who is homesteading south of Wood, was in town Moday. He has been acting’ in the capa- city of foreman in the Winner Advo- cate office, but resigned his position last Fridav. He is now busy on his homestead taking care of his crops. “The Land of Broken Promises” is the title of our next big serial story that will begin soon. This is a story right up to the minute and will be sure to please you, dealing with the Mexican war. You should not fail to read it. Tell your friends al>out it. Mrs. Francis Coleman took charge of the Calumet Resteraunt here latt Saturday. Mr. Scholl who has been conducting this place of business for the past several months, moved his family to his homestead some ten milea west of Wood. He expects to continue doing freighting between here and Winner. W r e received a letter from Leonard Ellmaker this week inclosing a re- mittance for a years subscription to the Pioneer. Leonard is now locat- ed at Lakeland, Florida, where he has a position with the Southern Ex- press Company, and says that ha likes the country fine, but that he hopes to be in Mellette county again some day. The SherifT of Lyman county ac- companied by Mr. Roberts were here Sunday on the trail of some horse thieves who had stolen some horses from the latter, ft is reported that two arrests were made north east of town, two brothers who moved to Mellette from Lyman county. Carter Takes Another From Wood.
