The issue of sexualharassmentis a serious one and one aboutwhich we need totalk. This isintended to b e the beginning of adialogue. Every campus In thenation is faced with incidents ofsexual harassment MercyhurstCollege is notan exception. It isimportant for us to realize that it isour campus. When I refer to us, Imean students, faculty and ad-ministration.

According to federal law,"noperson in theUnited States shall,on the basis of sex, be excludedfrom participation in, be deniedthe benefits of, or be subjected todiscrimination under any educa-tion program or activity receivingfederal financial assistance."

    tmiii

Mercyhurst College echoes thislawand cl ari Ges its a pplication inthe Student Handbook and in apamphlet entitled "Sexual Harass-men L"

The Student Handbook statesthat, "Mercyhurst does not and

will not tolerate sexual harass-ment of a ny kind by a member ofthe faculty, administration, staff,or student body." The Handbookcontinues by statingthat "sexualharassment is defined as any un-welcom e direct or indirect sexualadvances, requests for sexual fa-vors, or other verbal or physicalconduct of a sexual nature."

'The Handbook concludes bystating that "implicit in the idea ofprofessionalism is the retion by those in positions of au-thority that in their relationshipswith students or others there isalways an element of power. It isincumbent upon those with au-thority not to abuse, nor seem toabuse, the power with which theyare entrusted.'9

Sexual harassment is seldomdiscussedin a public forum amongstudents at Mercyhurst College.Consequently, it is difficult forindividuals to recognize what isand what is not sexual harass-ment After dif iggftifl the issuewith Cathy Anderson, the affir-mative action officer at Mercy-

hurst Co llege, thekeyword seemsto be "comf ort " If an individualis not comfortable, something iswrong. There are various levelsof responsibility involved ina ting and maintaininga comfort-able environment for learning.

One level of responsibility isexplainedin die closing statementof the Student Handbook's de-scription of sexual harassmentFaculty mustnot "abuse, nor seemto abuse, the power with whichthey are entrusted." Sexual ha-rassment is often an issue o f grayareas and the Student Handbookattempts to address these areas.Faculty must not "seem to abusethe power with which they areentrusted."The relationship betweena pro-

fessor or staff member and astu-dent is not simply one of twoconsenting adults. The StudentHandbook provides a warning inits definition o f relationships b e-tween persons in positions of au-thoiity and students. There isalways an element of power."Faculty have a great deal of re-

sponsibility in observingand re-specting the nature of such rela-tionships.

The student also has respon si-bilities. The pamphlet advisesthatif placedin an uncomfortable situ-ation, oneshould speak up at anytime.Be sure to say "NO! " clearly, firmly and without smiling. Thisis not the F time to be polite orvague. Communication isvital indefining boundaries of comfort

The pamphlet cautions the vic-tim of sexual harassment not toblame himself/herself. Sexualharassment is not something onebrings upon oneself, it is actionthat the harasser decides to take.It is not the victim's fault Thepamphlet also urges die victim tobe vocal immediately.!Do notdelay and donot remain silent Ifsilence is maintained and actiondelayed, the harassmentis likelyto continue.Accordingto the Supreme Court

case Kadiki v. Virginia Common-wealth University, the adminis-tration is also responsibleand canbe held liable if t "eitherknew or

It ha s bee n a long four yea rs forall of hese players who we nt froman unknown team to be recog-nized as t national powerhouse.Ihad die pleasure o f meeting upwith the seniors on the men 's s oc-cer team (Ian Dickerson, DarrenMurray, Jack Lengel and KeithSelvitelli) t o discuss their fouryears here at Mercy hurst, bothfrom a sporting and person al pointof view.

    Ml

The play en they played with

"Rich Sheldon and Greg Waddlewer e outstanding players and in-spirational during my first year.During die last two year s, JimmyReen was a great player, a greatsweeper. He read die gam e reallywell, but if I had to pick the bestplayer over the four years, it woul dhave to be Greg Waddle. All theplayers respected him and every-one really enjoyed playing withhim because he brought the bestout of people," said Ian Dickerson.

"Jimmy Reen, Greg Waddle,Glen Francis a n d 'Ticker '(Dickerson). I played with Jimmyfor four years and I jus t know himan d w e play well together.Ticker ' is just Ticker', ye k nowhe's amazing fund Glen is anAntiguan international s o obvi-ously a go od player. This year, Ithink that we were more of a teamthan last year and I think that isone of the re asons that I think w edidn't win the final four,** saidMurray.

I'd have to agree with Danen,Glen, Ticker and Jimmy, a reamong the bes t players, but I wouldalso include Darren as a goal-keeper. I think the big differencewas the junior and senior yearcompared to the sophomore andfreshman year where we didn'thave the team unity my first f ewyears here and it was n't e njoy ableplaying. At the end of my sopho-more year, I thinkthat Rich reallyworked hard on getting the teamtogether and we all respected eachOther and there wasn't as muchbickering or complaining amongsteach other" said Lengel.

T h e first game of our fresh*man year until

pj the last game of oursenior year he [Jack Le ngel ] held

the right back position. He play edistently every game, andI

don't remember Jack every hav-ing a bad game. He isa qualitydefender,9* said Selvitelli.

    Memories

"Getting to die final four w asprobably die best moment Ithought that we should have w onit, I was disappointed that w edidn't Win it All o f the times thatwe wen t down to Hoppers and theEdge on a Thursday night werealways great times becausew ehad a great team experience. Oneof the funniest memories waswhe n Stua rt Hogg came sprintingout of die hotel toilet naked andjumped in die pool sayin g "finalfour here we com e." This wasafter the Missouri game and wewer e just after getting through tothe final four, even though RichHards wasn't too happy about it,bu t i t was stil l| funny," s aidDickerson.

1 don't havcr any specificmemories, it was a great experi-ence going to die NCA A playoffsand making die final four and thatwas definitely the high point ofmy four yeais. It wa s a greatexperience and not many peoplehav e that opportunity and just theatmosphere about being aroundall those people and al l yourfriends that you play with. I metall my good friends playing soc-cer," said Lengel.

"On a personal note, as a teamwe went to ClubGiggles. Afterthe Buffalo games,w e alwayswent to Lazertron and our oldgoalkeeper, Bartiey, was alwaystaking the piss (said with a gigg le)out of the workers there. It wasjust a fun experiencegoing awaywith the team,* said Lengel.

"Getting to the final four for h ethird time, two in junior college

and one at Mercyhu rst Off thepitch has to be Stew ie, (StuartHogg) down in north east Mis-souri when he jumped into theSwimming pool. When we quali-fied or he final four. Stewie cametun >ting out o f the jacks (toilet)right into the middle o f the lobbyof the hotel in his nip (naked) anddived into the swimming pool,*said Murray.

"It woul d have t o be the Gannongame when we defeated diem 5-1my sophomore year. We really

    *V*W.**a - * > . - - - . * _ -V w .

Ian Dickerson, Darren Murray and Jack Lengel gather in the union to reflect on their Mercy hthrashed them. Betweenthat andthe Missouri St Louis my junioryear to go to the final four for thefirst time and nobody expected usto do it," said Selvitelli.

"Every year we'd leave*forgames on Friday and we 'd all goout on Thursday night and gettwisted because itwaa the onlytime that we could go out Thenon die bus on Friday morning, thebus would stink from peoplefarting, ft was guaranteed alwaysto be a laugh,19 said Selvitelli.

    Regrets

"Not winning the final four lastyear and not getting to the finalfour this year. I would have also

    w

liked to have scored moregoals.Ithink die coaching staff shouldhave put Rob Gillooly up front,"said Dickerson.

    "I'm regretting now maybe!to Erie because I don't

    ill

really like it It's in the middle of

nowhere and there is nothing todo. In terms of soccer, notmak-ing the final four again this year, but eh thats the way things go,**said Murray.

"Senior year waa kind of tough, not playing mo st of the year (dueto injury), it's not really a regretbut more o f a disappointmentOther than that, I don't really have

    eta," said Lengel.Coaching

better back hom e (England), theyknew a lot more, but over hereIthink Rich Harris got along withpeople really well. He knew howto get people going and that waahis major strong point, but diecoaching wasn't too good," saidDickerson.

"I had Trevor (Warren) for the

first year, but I mink that Rich wa smore in touch with the players. Iknow thathe didn't get alongwitha lot o f people , but I think that hegot die team pretty much to worktogether. With the two coa chesJohn (Melody) and Rich (Hards)there was a good persona] differ-ence. John was more of a playerthan a personal coach and Richwas more ofa personal coach, butthey both had a good balance ofboth I think," said Lengel.

1 have a lot of respect for bothJohn and Rich because they tooka chance on taking me down herewithout eve n seeing me play. L jthought that Rich wa s go od, but Ihad better back home, but It*sadifferent sortof soccerover here,it's not as intense. John was verygood on the personal level," saidMurray.

'T he balance betwe en John andRich was good. Rich knewatactical game inside-ou t to say theleast and John was a players9coach," said Lenge l.
