MCC Dawah Committee

MCC was honored to host a two-day seminar entitled “Hablamos Islam” with dedicated speakers from the organization of the same name; which has been active in translating and producing Islamic Material in Spanish for the last 10 years. Beneficial talks in both English and Spanish were given on the importance of calling our neighbors to Islam through our actions and words Brother Hernan Guadelupe who emphasized the importance of building relationships and need for continuously seeking knowledge in Islam. Sister Wendy Diaz spoke on the importance of raising our children with upright morals and character. Alhumdulilaah we were blessed to have some non-Muslim guests come for the talks and left very excited about Islam, even joining us in prayer.

Women’s Committee’s Eid Celebrations

The beginning of the month was marked by a fun filled Sisters only Eid celebration at MEC. The celebration began with recitation of 99 names of Allah (SWT). Many sisters came forward and shared poetry and ‘naat’ in their melodious voices. The celebration was marked by a lot of enthusiastic and enjoyable games which were evenly spread out through the event. Not only were there winners, they didn’t go home without prizes. Appetizers and lunch was served, which gave plenty of time for sisters to get to know each other. Baby-sitting was provided for the young ones, which made room for sisters to participate in the events and games with full zeal.

Asea Qidwai, Staff ReporterContemporary Islam is not known for its engagement in the modern scientific project. But it is heir to a legendary “Golden Age” of Arabic science frequently invoked by commentators hoping to make Muslims and Westerners more respectful and understanding of each other. President Obama, for instance, in his June 4, 2009 speech in Cairo, praised Muslims for their historical scientific and intellectual contributions to civilization:

It was Islam that carried the light of learning through so many centuries, paving the way for Europe’s Renaissance and Enlightenment. It was innovation in Muslim communities that developed the order of algebra; our magnetic compass and tools of navigation; our mastery of pens and printing; our understanding of how disease spreads and how it can be healed.

Hollywood Celebrity Dave Chappelle on Islam

In 2005, Chappelle spoke to Time magazine about his conversion to Islam. “I don’t normally talk about my religion publicly because I don’t want people to associate me and my flaws with this

beautiful thing. And I believe it is a beautiful religion if you learn it the right way,” he said. “It’s a lifelong effort. Your religion is your standard. Coming here I don’t have the distractions of fame. It quiets the ego down. I’m interested in the kind of person I’ve got to become. I want to be well-rounded and the industry is a place of extremes. I want to be well-balanced. I’ve got to check my intentions, man.”

Seminar on “Aakhirah” at MEC

A lecture on the topic of Aakhirah was conducted by Sr. Fouzia Rehman of the Women’s Committee, at MEC on August 29 2015. This sisters only session also touched upon the topic of the virtues of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah and Sr. Fouzia gave the dos and don’ts according to the Quran and Sunnah, so as to make the most out of these days.

The highly attentive audience was captivated by the speakers powerful reminders, as she briefly discussed various Surahs of the Quran, which describe the calamities of the Judgement Day, Surah Takbir being the basis for this subject. Tangentially, she also explained about the blessings of having a girl child and that Allah SWT bestows His mercy upon parents who raise their daughters(s) in the light of Quran and Sunnah. The enlightening session was concluded with questions and answers on the topic of Hajj.

Such tributes to the Arab world’s era of scientific achievement are generally made in service of a broader political point, as they usually precede discussion of the region’s contemporary problems. They serve as an implicit exhortation: the great age of Arab science demonstrates that there is no categorical or congenital barrier to tolerance, cosmopolitanism, and advancement in the Islamic Middle East.

To anyone familiar with this Golden Age, roughly spanning the eighth through the thirteenth centuries a.d., the disparity between the intellectual achievements of the Middle East then and now — particularly relative to the rest of the world — is staggering indeed. In his 2002 book What Went Wrong?, historian Bernard Lewis notes that “for many centuries the world of Islam was in the forefront of human civilization and achievement.” “Nothing in Europe,” notes Jamil Ragep, a professor of the history of science at the University of Oklahoma, “could hold a candle to what was going on in the Islamic world until about 1600.” Algebra, algorithm, alchemy, alcohol, alkali, nadir, zenith, coffee, and lemon: these words all derive from Arabic, reflecting Islam’s contribution to the West.
