Letter From the Rector Dear Friends, A cannibal, feeling a bit peckish, gobbled up a Methodist missionary for his elevenses. He then ate a Catholic priest for lunch and an Anglican bishop for supper. That night he couldn’t sleep with a terrible pain in his stomach which still distressed him in the morning, so he was obliged to call for the witchdoctor. The witchdoctor examined him and when he heard what he had been eating recently he knew immediately what the problem was. ‘I am afraid’, he said, ‘that you are experiencing an ecumenical movement!’ Jesus’ famous words, often known as the great commission, are: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. (Matt. 28:19-20). The first disciples took Jesus at his word and went. If they hadn’t then there might not be a Christian church in Middlewich or Byley today. We are grateful to them for their obedience to take the good news of Jesus Christ to ‘all nations’ – the task of mission. Missionary activity has been a key part of the church ever since from the itinerant friars of the early middle ages to the colonial missionaries of the 18th and 19th centuries. Missionaries often endured great hardships and even death for the sake of bringing God’s love to new tribes and nations. Missionary work has not always had good results particularly where church and politics have become entangled, as this quote from Desmond Tutu reminds us: When the missionaries came to Africa they had the Bible and we had the land. They said ‘Let us pray’. We closed our eyes. When we opened them we had the Bible but they had the land! Despite this the task of mission continues today, a task to which every Christian is called to make a contribution. It is not our gospel, but Jesus’ gospel and he asks us to share it with others. Some are called to work on the ‘front line’ whether overseas or in our own communities, those who are not are called to support them financially and through prayer. How do we achieve this in Middlewich & Byley? By financial and prayer support for overseas mission initiatives – such as Christ for All in Andhra

Pradesh, or the Anglican Church in the Congo (this quarter’s charitable focus). By being involved in outreach activities in our own community – such as Street Pastors, Good Neighbours, Smilers, the Alpha Course and our No28 drop-in. But perhaps most importantly by our own words and actions. Our lives should communicate God’s love to our neighbours, and as St Peter said: We should always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give a reason for that hope that you have (1 Peter 3:15). Yours in Christ Simon Drew

This Mothering Sunday we will give thanks for the great job mums do, giving their all to nurture and support our families. But we remember that for many facing adversity, providing for their loved ones isn’t easy. But Mothers’ Union’s Make a Mother’s Day campaign offers a unique opportunity to not only thank or remember your mother, but also help a mother in need create a better life for her family and herself. Mothers like Rebecca, from South Sudan, who joined our Literacy and Financial Education Programme. Having learnt just how important education is, she is now determined to make sure her children stay in school because it gives them opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have. Now she can read, Rebecca realises that, before, she could have made bad mistakes in giving medicine to her children. But now she is able to ensure they get the right treatment. This will literally save lives! Mothers’ Union also helped Rebecca start a business making and selling ice cream and juice. The income is providing a better life for her family. A gift of £15 can help people like Rebecca learn to read and write, start businesses and save with their communities to overcome poverty. Support our Make a Mother’s Day campaign and give the gifts of training and support to mothers in over 80 countries, helping them to overcome hardships and lift those around them to new heights. St. Michael's Mothers' Union will be collecting donations for this project, or you can pick up a leaflet from the table by the door to do it independently. Donations can be given to Miriam Sant or Susan Hawkes.

Book Reviews
The Soul of Football – one man’s story of football, family and faith By Mark Chester, BRF £6.99 Have you ever wondered if the language of football could be used to explore the deeper issues of life and faith? Mark Chester is ideally placed to do just that. In a book of two halves, Mark kicks off by telling his own football story—a story of hope rising and hope dashed, of winning and losing, of an inspirational football manager, of serious injury and of the very personal impact of one of the worst football stadium disasters in history, at Hillsborough. It’s a tale inextricably linked to the story of his family, which features a migration to a foreign land, a television appearance, some intriguing graffiti, a Bride of the Year competition and a call from God. In the second half, ‘Soccer Soul’, Mark weaves together his football and Christian experience and uses the language of football, learnt so well over the years, to begin to explore 15 key areas of the Christian faith. Football is a language that is understood by billions the world over. Mark’s hope for the book is that it will be a channel to open discussion about faith with football fans far and wide. Walking with Old Testament Women: imaginative studies for Bible meditations By Fiona Stratta, BRF, £7.99 At a time when the big narratives of the Old Testament are finding their way back into the cinema (albeit through a somewhat creative reworking of the text), and the value of women to the church in terms of leadership is being reinforced, author Fiona Stratta feels the time is right for Christians to reconsider the value of the Old Testament witness for modern-day faith, with a particular focus on the women! For her new book, Fiona researched the lives of Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Leah, Tamar, Miriam, Rahab, Naomi, Ruth, Hannah, Bathsheba and Esther, discovering details that overfamiliarity with the stories had blurred. She found that the way in which God interacted with these ancient women has the potential to open up a fresh and powerful way of bringing God’s word into 21st-century lives.

Mother’s reward
A man was decorating his new den and decided it was a good place to display all the awards he and his two sons had won at various athletic competitions. When he had filled two whole walls, he remarked to his wife that it was a shame she had no awards to contribute. The following day, she produced, neatly framed, the birth certificates of their two sons, and added them to the display.

Palm Sunday
Palms and praises pointing to victory
as the King rides on, the promised King,
gentle and riding on a donkey. Promised of old -
and given that gift of gold, early on. Half-recognised in his kingdom- signs and words,
kindling hope, leading to hosannas, to palms and praises.
And then the turning, as this King shows a different sovereignty.
The cries of “Crucify”, the cruel crowning
as thorns pierce head and hearts.
A misunderstanding. A misreading of the signs, so clear.
A failure to trust the King, who was and is and always will be Truth.
Father, forgive us, We know not what we are doing,
Still. By Daphne Kitching
Palm Sunday Prayer
Loving Father,
People didn’t recognise Jesus as your son, on that first Palm Sunday, even though you had told them what to expect. They wanted him to be their hero, to do things their way, to meet their expectations. To be a king of their own creation. Perhaps we still do.
Help us to look beyond what we think is best, to see that the values of your Kingdom are very different from the values of this world. Help us to proclaim you as our King, to commit ourselves to building for your Kingdom to come - and then to trust you and get on with it. In Jesus name, Amen.
