THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
DECEMBER-JANUARY 2016-7 DICIEMBRE-ENERO 2016-7
The Messenger ~ El Mensajero
ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH ~ SAN LUCAS IGLESIA EPISCOPAL
Rector’s Corner Jesus needs you!
Are you able to see God at work
in numbers and spreadsheets? Can
you perceive the Holy Spirit leading
us to truth in the policies of the Par-
ish? Are you willing to give sacrifi-
cially of your time to the work of SL2?
The Vestry and Diocesan Convention need you!
We have lost 2 additional people this year, due to res-
ignations. We have 5 openings of varying years. That’s
unusual! Our Diocesan Delegates are now up to 6, and
that’s an extra burden on our Parish to provide repre-
sentation. In 2016 we only sent 4 out of the 6 we were
entitled to.
Our Vestry needs to have people to pray and make
the hard decisions of governance for the rest of us.
Our political structure is such that the People delegate
to the Vestry and Clergy the monthly governance de-
cisions that make it possible to continue to work with-
out ceasing and pray tirelessly for the reign of God to
be manifest among us. Our political structure makes
the Delegates to Diocesan Convention our representa-
tives, joining the whole Diocese in making policy and
financial decisions for the welfare of all. All of these
posts are a commitment of time and talent that mani-
fest God through the ways we process our decisions.
The position of Warden (member of the Vestry)
implies that you “guard” the Parish, are a steward of
its resources, and you ensure the provision of the spir-
itual benefits that a parish is meant to provide. It’s
similar to the Diocesan Delegate, who represents the
Parish at the Diocesan Convention, and carefully
makes the decisions through which we apply our
shared gifts to the work of God’s reign. The Conven-
tion only meets once a year. In 2017, that’s in Vancou-
ver. The Vestry meets monthly and requires help in its
committees from its members.
There is an article in this newsletter that tells you
more. Read it and consider serving. The Parish cannot
operate without good governance.

2 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
bido a renuncias.

titud.
¿Cuantas veces miramos a nuestro alrededor y
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 3
Algunos to-
He conocido y gozado de trabajar
apoya.
La autora Melody Beattie escribió: Gratitud abre la ple-
nitud de la vida. Convierto lo que tenemos en más que
suficiente. Transforma la negación en aceptación, caos
a orden, confusión a claridad.

ruega hacer tan pronto sea posible.
bre.

Meta 2: Expandir Programas Sociales
WHAT va a mandar sus muebles a nuestro sótano.
a Bob Stavig.
Hemos limpiado, pintado, movido, tirado, etc. Atiende
St Luke's ~ San Lucas.

SENIOR WARDEN’S MESSAGE Gratitude is defined as the quality of being
thankful, readiness to show appreciation for
and to return kindness. It is an affirmation of
goodness.
Robert Emmons, a world leading scientific
expert on gratitude says it is recognition that the
sources of this goodness is outside of ourselves. It is a
relationship-strengthening emotion because it re-
quires us to see how we have been supported and
affirmed by other people. Gratitude brings us happi-
ness and reduces anxiety and depression. Gratitude is
good for our bodies as it strengthens the immune sys-
tem, lowers blood pressure, reduces symptoms of ill-
ness and makes us less bothered by aches and pains.
His studies show that grateful people sleep better.
Gratitude makes us more resilient and strengthens
relationships making us feel closer and more com-
mitted to friends and family. Gratitude promotes for-
giveness and makes us “pay it forward”.
If you think about it, St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas promotes
gratitude. We are thankful for the joy of being togeth-
er as brothers and sisters in Christ. We are thankful
for or mission that allows us to help men and women
in our community. Think of the women we will shel-
tering in the basement. How grateful they will be that
we want to give them that help and support. Think of
the support each of us receives from our fellow pa-
rishioners during both the hard times and the good
times. How many times do we look around and thank
everyone for just being there for us?
Before I moved to Vancouver, I belonged to a Red
Hats Group in Poulsbo, Washington. It was the tradi-
tion of that group to end each gathering by sharing a
gratitude with everyone. Sometimes it was simply be-
ing grateful for being together and sharing part of a
day with each other. Sometimes it was for health and
healing. Other times it was for family and friends. We
all left our feeling closer to each other and joyful for
our time together.
I would like to encourage each of you to find some-
thing to that you are grateful for and hold it close to
your heart. It is amazing the energy you will get from
this simple act. Several people I know start their day
with a grateful prayer for waking up to a new day.
Others end the day with a prayer of thankfulness for
the day that has just passed. Some keep a gratitude
journal. No matter what way they decide to express
their gratitude, they are enjoying the benefits of being
thankful be it a positive attitude to face the day or
better sleep to end it.
I would like to share my “gratitude” today. I am
thankful that Jim and I found St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. I
am thankful for this time as the Senior Warden. I have
met so many of you and enjoyed working with you.
This has enriched my life and given me a connection
to Vancouver that I would have had trouble finding
on my own. I am thankful for family who support me.
Author Melody Beattie wrote: Gratitude unlocks the
fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and
more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order,
confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a
house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude
makes sense of our past, brings peace for today and
creates a vision for tomorrow.
I wish all of you a blessed holiday season and hope in
these troubled times that you find ways to be grateful.

PLEDGE CAMPAIGN UPDATE Thank you to all who turned in their pledges by In-
gathering Sunday (November 13) as requested. As of
November 28, we have $335,008 pledged toward our
goal of $454,181. We have received 104 pledges out of
the 140 hoped for, compared to last year when we re-
ceived a total of 124 units. We have 11 new first-time
pledgers, and 35 members have increased their pledge
over last year. Our overall goal is an ambitious “reach”
goal that will enable us to provide the personnel, ser-
vices and programs necessary to continue to serve
God, our parish and the community around us. If you
have not yet returned your pledge card we ask that
you do so as soon as possible. The Vestry customarily
finalizes the annual budget at the January meeting, so
it’s vital that we have your pledge commitment by the
end of December at the latest.

de Chalma, followed by a meal.
You are invited to contribute a dish to the pot luck
meal, help with set up (4:00PM) and clean up (8:30PM).

PAGEANT PRACTICE SCHEDULE December 17, 2016

Hispanic practice: 1:00pm
FEAST OF EPIPHANY:
THREE KINGS’ DAY This year we will have a bilingual
Holy Eucharist on the Feast of
Epiphany, Friday, January 6 at 7PM. Come and join
us as we celebrate this feast and experience other cul-
tural traditions surrounding this day.
YOUR CHURCH NEEDS YOU
TO SERVE! Serving on the Vestry
Vestry members normally serve a term of three (3)
years. This year we are in need of two additional mem-
bers; One for one year and one for two years. Those
who run will serve based on the number of votes that
they receive at the Annual Meeting to be held January
29th.
Vestry members are expected to maintain the status as
a Communicant in Good Standing, and continue to
contribute financially to the parish during their term of
service, and able and willing to attend monthly and
special vestry meetings, an annual retreat, and to work
on vestry sub-committees and special projects.
Serving as a Delegate/Alternate to the Diocesan Con-
vention
Delegates and Alternates normally serve a term of two
(2) years. This year all previous delegates and alter-
nates are retiring. So the vestry is looking for 6 Dele-
gate candidates and 6 Alternates candidates. We are
required to provide representation equally by sex.
Delegates/Alternates are expected to attend and repre-
sent St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas at Regional meetings that
usually convene 3-6 times during a calendar year.
These meetings usually occur in the fall prior to the
Diocesan Convention. It is also expected that Dele-
gates/Alternates will familiarize themselves with pro-
posed resolutions and diocesan budget and prayerfully
vote at convention according to this discernment. Last-
ly, delegates/alternates are expected to attend the Dioc-
esan Convention both years. The next on is scheduled
for to be held October 27-28 at the Hilton in Van-
couver Washington.
Eligibility to serve as a member of St. Luke’s ~ San
Lucas Vestry or Delegate/Alternative

and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God”),
who is a contributor of record for the calendar year
preceding their nomination.

sent our parish as a delegate/alternate for 2 years.
2. Review the eligibility requirements.

thex, complete the form and return it to the parish of-

on the ballot.
5. Nominees will be required to submit a photograph,
in either digital or photo paper form to the parish of-
fice by January 15.

you are, you will be doing a great service to the
church.
WANTED: 2016 PHOTOS Have you taken pictures during any events or services
here at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas this year? We would like
to have your pictures please. Not only are these part of

2016 MINISTRY ANNUAL REPORTS ATTENTION MINISTRY LEADERS: With our 2016
Annual Meeting fast approaching, please begin to
gather your ministry data for your annual ministry re-
port. As in the past, we want to keep these a brief and
fact-filled as possible. Please provide 3-5 Accomplish-
ments in direct phrases with numerical facts, when ap-
plicable. The due date for these Annual Ministry Re-
ports is Sunday, January 8, 2016. Your timeliness will
be most helpful to my task of producing the annual
report.
Thank you,
Kris Lawless, Parish Administrator
Goal 2: Expand Outreach SHARE's W. H. A. T. SHELTER After hearing from parishioners, speaking with
SHARE and researching the needs of the building, the
SHARE Feasibility Committee unanimously recom-
mended to the vestry to host the shelter. The vestry
voted to go forward. By our hosting WHAT, we will be
maintaining the additional 12 shelter beds for women
in Clark County, begun in April 2016 by St. Paul’s
Lutheran.
About the time this newsletter is published, SHARE's
WHAT (Women Housing and Transition) shelter may
be moving their furniture into our basement. They will
rent rooms 102, 104, 106 and 107 to be bedrooms for 12
women who are homeless. They will use room 100 for
their living room and the small space to the left of the
Helping Hands room (101) for a staff office. They hope
to welcome their first guests the week of December 5.
On November 19 St Luke’s ~ San Lucas parishioners
plus volunteers from Hewlett Packard (thank you Bob
and Deb Stavig for setting this up) hauled off stuff
stored in these rooms (that was deemed unwanted),
did a major clean and painted the walls. We had twen-
ty-two volunteers! The project also received $300 in
unsolicited cash! Please check the Bulletin and read
parish emails alerting you to another opportunity to
help SHARE get set up, most likely the weekend of
Dec 3-4.
12 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
There are other ways we can show our support for the
shelter. Helping to create a warm and welcoming
space in our basement is an important beginning. If
anyone wants to donate items, please contact Deb
Stavig 360 891-7161 as we want to be sure donations
are not duplicated, and that they are items SHARE will
use. There may be opportunities in the future to have
joint activities with our guests such as crafts or game
nights, or we may be able to offer a warm soup or
breakfast on occasion. Call Jeanne Stephens 206-245-
0426 if you have ideas for such activities. Welcome
WHAT to St Luke's ~ San Lucas!

SANDY HOOK REMEMBRANCE
My name is Heather Freitag and I am the local leader
for Moms Demand Action Clark County, a gun vio-
lence prevention group. I am writing to inform you
about an important event this December.
We are joining with many other groups around the
United States to remember the 27 victims of the Sandy
Hook Elementary School shooting. The front doors to
Sandy Hook Elementary locked at 9:30am on Dec. 14,
2012 and by 9:35am the shooting had begun. The vic-
tims, 20 children ages 6 and 7, 6 adult school staff
members, and the mother of the shooter. 27 in all. Most
of us remember that day with deep sadness, and the
Sandy Hook community has had to live beyond that
day.
At 9:35 am on Wednesday, Dec.14, 2016, many Clark
County Churches, with working Bells, will Chime their
Bell 27 times. Later that day we will be hosting a Walk-
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 13
ing Vigil in downtown Vancouver. The Vigil will begin
at 6:30pm at Esther Short Park. You are invited to join
in the Vigil.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions at

Heather Freitag
THANKSGIVING BASKETS 18 holiday food baskets were filled and given to fami-
lies and or individuals this November. They were
filled with a generous assortment of food and the addi-
tion of a turkey as well. Thank you to everyone who
contributed to this great tradition. Also, a shout out to
the junior helpers who helped fill the baskets.

FUND-RAISER REPORT Total collected from October’s Burgerville fund-raiser
for Vancouver Schools' HOPE program, including
sales percentage, tip jar, and carry-over from previous
event, was $1,078.59. Don from Hoesly Eco Auto
brought his staff and their families and treated them
and also dropped a check into the tip jar. Mayor
Leavitt bought ten meals for a meeting he was on his
way to. Cora worked hard as usual and should be
hired immediately. Many thanks to all who supported
our community's homeless students. Winter will be a
little warmer for those deserving kids.

WHO - FEBRUARY 26-MARCH 4 2017 Since 2005 St Luke's ~ San Lucas has provided volun-
teer coverage for the men's overflow shelter for one
week during each winter. This winter, we will cover
the shelter (at St Paul's Lutheran Church on Franklin
in downtown Vancouver) for the 7 nights, February 26
-March 4 during Lent. There are three shifts of 4-5
hours for each of the 7 nights. Volunteers receive clear
instructions on what to do on each shift. NO EXPERI-
ENCE NEEDED. In January at the 8am, 10am and 1pm
services someone will be available in the Narthex and
the Parish Hall to answer questions and to fill up the
schedule of volunteers. We hope to have volunteers
from all three services. Won't you consider taking a
shift? If you want to say 'yes' or you have questions
now, please call Jeanne Stephens 206-245-0426.

Goal 3: Spiritual Growth SUNDAY SCHOOL HISTORY Historically, Sunday school started in England in 1790s
by Anglicans to give general education to poor chil-
dren who had to work long hours for the rest of the
week. In the U.S., general education laws in 1870s
caused these schools to focus on religious training.
Children were expected to go to Sunday school (even
if their parents didn’t attend church services), until so-
ciety changed in the 1970’s and 1980s.
At St. Luke’s, Sunday School probably started with the
consecration of St. Luke’s in 1860, as the church was a
converted schoolhouse, and Mrs. McCarty is noted as
conducting Sunday School on Sunday afternoon. Ref-
erences are found about Sunday School from that
point forward. The Parochial Report of 1884 lists 6
teachers and 70 students.
A 1936 Lantern said Kindergarten and Primary depart-
ments would be held in the “Parish Hall” at 26th and F
streets and the main school beginning with the 3rd
grade through the Bible class at the Church. At that
time there was an 8:00AM service and an 11:00AM
“Family” service. Sunday school would start at
9:45AM.
With Sunday school attendance noted as ranging from
65 in 1934, to around 180 in 1938, and to 203 in 1941,
there was a strong need for a volunteer organization to
support this ministry. The rector and a school superin-
tendent served as the top leaders, with a Treasurer,
Secretary and the church organist also serving on the
school board. There 15 to 20 teachers, each focusing on
14 THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO
a small group of boys or girls, with substitutes on call.
Imagine what this was like!
In 1946, a Lantern article quoted a teacher: “When I reg-
istered my children in their classes, I realized my re-
sponsibility did not rest there. If one takes the broad
view of the church, religious training of young people
is perhaps one of the most important phases of church
life. I volunteered my services as a teacher and was ac-
cepted by the Board.” Follow the example of this con-
scientious parent – the reward is rich.

NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM With the Advent season, another liturgical year has
begun, more than a month before the calendar year.
The new year is a time of reflection, thanksgiving, and
anticipation. Our service of Lessons and Carols al-
lowed us to reflect on the prophesies of Isaiah, Micah,
and Zephaniah in words and music. We give thanks
for the musical talent within our parish and for the gift
from the family of Lori Barber to enhance the organ in
our rear balcony. We anticipate some great worship
and music opportunities in the coming months: jazz on
the trombone, Christmas music by Michael Praetorius,
and the joyful noise of a new trumpet stop on our 1890
Adams pipe organ.
Trombonist Stan Bock will be
our guest musician at Jazz
Vespers on Saturday, Dec. 3rd

intent to assume the role as ministry leaders for Friday
Night Live. Many thanks to Brad and Ginger Harris
who have led the ministry for many successful years.
One of the best ways to build relationships and grow
together in Christ is by breaking bread together and
there’s no better place to do this that at a fun and re-
laxed Friday Night Live. The Mayhews, who attend the
8:00 service, have chosen this ministry because it is
through the Friday Night Live events that they’ve
come to know members from other services, many of
whom have become cherished friends. If you would
like to host a Friday Night Live next year, please con-
tact Sharon or Jim at [email protected],
360-952-0334 (cell) or 360-574-0074 (home).

Goal 4: Pastoral Care LIFE GOES ON The next meeting of Life Goes On is on Thursday,
December 15, 2-4 PM at Glenwood Retirement Cen-
ter (5500 NE 82nd Ave, near the Vancouver Mall). We
are a group of people who have faced significant loss
and are in the process of grieving. Some lost someone
several years ago, others have lost someone this past
year. We share grief and loss and work hard not only
to remember the ones we have lost but to find new
meaning and purpose in continuing our lives. Life
does go on. Please feel welcomed to come join our
group. We share together and enjoy some goodies,
coffee and tea.
The Rev. Dennis Cole

fourth Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be
on December 20 at 6:30 PM in the Chapel of the Holy
Spirit, (Children’s Chapel).

Administrative & Financial TREASURER’S REPORT BUDGET SUMMARY
“Dollars and Sense”
Percentages should to be at 83% of budgeted revenue
and expense.
October revenues and expenses should to be at 83% of
budgeted revenue and expense.
Summary as of October 31, 2016
Revenues: Actual revenues as of October are higher
than expected year-to-date income. Yes!
Expenses: Overall expenses are under YTD budget
projections. Yes! The actual net income is inflated due
to accounting procedures and will be adjusted next
month to $16,063.
Additional Comments: The vestry is counting on car-
ryover funds to help meet our 2017 stretch goal. These
funds are the result of: a late start of admin. assistant,
no medical for admin. assistant, no youth coordinator
hired, services we provide category is underspent,
pastoral care is not spending the amount requested,
and receipt of an unanticipated DIF interest windfall
in February.
This is the time to be sure you are on target for meet-
ing year-end pledge commitments. A financial state-
ment will be mailed out in early December to docu-
ment your contributions. If you want an update before
this time, please contact the treasurer’s office.
Thank you for your continued contributions.

Adjustment.
OTHER RAISES: Key staff members will also re-

cent years. Reduced diocesan staffing will start to
affect individual congregations.

5 children started First Communion classes 10/9.
Lay leaders have been selected for our Young
Families Ministry.
