and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh
O Lord, grateful of Thy great benefits which Thou hast so richly bestowed upon us in Thy loving-kindness, we bless and give thanks to Thee and we beseech Thee to look graciously upon us and these graduates, who have completed their courses of study. Pour into their hearts, minds, and upon their lips, the spirit of wisdom, understanding, piety, and godly fear; enlighten them with the light of Thy knowledge, and bestow upon them strength and steadfastness, that they may quickly apprehend and willingly embrace all that they have received which is good and profitable, and in accordance with Thy divine law.
Grant that they grow in wisdom and understanding. May they prosper in good works for the glorification of Thy holy Name. Give them health and long life that they may labor for the building up and glory of Thy holy Church, this nation, and of all Thy people.
For Thou art a God, Who is mighty in mercy and gracious in strength, and to Thee we send up glory: to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Pastoral Reflections by Father Costas
On June 29th, our church celebrates the feast of our patron saint, St. Paul the Apostle to the Nations, along with St. Peter. Together the calls them the “Chief of the Apostles”. We are blessed to be the only parish in the Metropolis of Pittsburgh, along with a few others in our Archdiocese, to have St. Paul as the patron of our community. I’m grateful to God that Fr. Theo Anastas, the founding pastor of our community, had the vision to guide our parish to choose St. Paul as our patron, guide and protector. In anticipation of this great celebration in our parish, allow me to offer a few words on the life of this unique Apostle and vi-sionary of the early Church.
St. Paul, known as the Apostle to the Gentiles, was born in the city of Tarsus, a Roman city, thereby giving him Roman citizenship. At his circumcision, he was given the Hebrew name Saul. At a young age his parents sent him to Jerusalem to be instructed in the Mosaic Law under the greatest Rabbi of his time, Gamaliel.
Saul was an excellent student and as a Pharisee was respected for his great intellect and zeal for the Jewish faith and traditions. Because the Jews had a rule that their children should learn a trade along with their studies, Saul learned to make tents. This is a trade that provided him with the finances he needed later in his life to travel and evangelize. Because of Saul’s great zeal for Jewish law and traditions, he was very upset about his Jewish brethren who were following the New Way, as Christianity was first called. So, thinking that he was serving God, Saul became the worst enemy of Christians. He hunted them down and dragged them out of their homes, imprisoning them and even having them killed. In fact, Saul was a witness to the stoning of the first Christian martyr, St. Stephen. Because Saul was a leader, he stood by and watched as those stoning Stephen laid their cloaks at his feet. It’s very likely that Saul ordered Stephen to be stoned.
Saint Luke’s recording of this story in his book of Acts, is not merely an historical account. While drawing his last breath, Stephen called out to God to forgive those that were stoning him. St. Augustine later declared that had Stephen not prayed, the Church would have never had the great Apostle Paul.
Some suggest that it was Stephen’s prayer that planted the seed which later helped Saul on his path to conversion.
Saul’s conversion occurred when he was on his way to the city of Damascus. He had gone to the high priest and the Sanhedrin for a commission to allow him to go where he knew there were many new Christians, to arrest them and take them back to Jerusalem for trial. The journey to Damascus took about two days by horseback. When he and his men were very near the city, they were suddenly surrounded by a light so bright that it knocked Saul to the ground. The account of what happened then is related in the book of Acts, chapter 9. “They heard a voice from heaven that said: ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?’ And Saul said, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And He said, ‘I am Jesus, Whom you are persecuting; but rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.’ The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. Saul arose from the ground and when his eyes were opened he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus”.
The story continues: “For three days he was without sight and neither ate nor drank. There was a disciple there named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, ‘Ananias.’ And he said, ‘Here I am, Lord.’ And the Lord said to him, ‘Rise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for a man of Tarsus named Saul; for behold, he is praying. And he has seen a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight.’ But Ananias answered, ‘Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to thy saints at Jerusalem; and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call upon thy name.’ But the Lord said to him, ‘Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine to carry My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; for I will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of My name.’
So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me that you may regain you sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ And immediately, something like scales fell from his eyes and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized, and took food and was strengthened.” From that time forth, Saul went on to preach about

It has been our sincere pleasure to have had the honor to have your most precious children in our Sunday School program. They have delighted us, made us giggle, surprised us, and blessed us with their deep faith. Thank you for your trust and patience throughout this school year. Without your faith in us, this program would not be what it is. I would like to take this opportunity to extend a vast many thank you’s. To the Sunday School Staff. Thank you is not nearly enough. A teacher touches a child’s mind in many ways. A Sunday School teacher has the responsibly of growing their spiritual soul. It is a heavy one and you all have taken it on with grace and dignity. Our Parish has a special treasure in every one of you. Thank you: JIM ANASTOS, TINA ASMIS, ESTHER HORWATH, SUSAN KARAS, ERIN KUBAT, ALEX LAIOS, STEVE LEKAS, MARIA LOVEJOY, MARIA MARKAKIS, HELEN MOZDEN, MARY OLENIK, ERIN PONTIKOS, ELAINE POULOS, AMBER RAHAS, JOY RAMBO, ERIKA SULLIVAN, MICHAEL TARTARA, ANNOULA TSONTON. I would also like to recognize EVA KARAS and SAMANTH SAMPSON. Without these two ladies, many of the programs our parish got to bare witness to would not have made it off the ground. They were instrumental in helping guide me through each and every week. ELAINE NACKOWIZ and PESBYTERA NICOLE, thank you both for your mentorship and help navigating a new system so unfamiliar to me. To my mother, KATHLEEN PERK, I must publicly recognize that you are my other half. We are a team in church and I would never have dreamed of taking on such an important position if I didn’t know that you would be there to support both me and Max & Lena. FATHER COSTAS, Thank You for always supporting our children. Always encouraging them to be their best and for always inspiring them to live within our community of Christ. Sunday School is just of the many ways you reach out to our youth and they are very blessed to have you in their lives. Thank you for asking me to take on such a powerfully impactful role in their lives as well. I only pray that I have served them well. May God Bless the Children.

Christ. Because he was so well-known as a Pharisee and was now evangelizing for Christ, Saul began being persecuted by his Jewish brethren in the same way he had been persecuting the Christians. After spending some time with the disciples of Christ in Damascus, God called Paul prayer in the desert. It is believed that this is where Paul had visions much like the vision St. John writes about in his book of Revelation. The Lord prepared Paul to teach the Gos-pel, and when Paul returned from the desert, after a short stay in Damascus, he went directly to Jerusalem where he met with Peter, and some of the other Apos-tles before he started on his ministry. Paul spent the rest of his life traveling and spreading the Gospel of Jesus, establishing churches and teaching others to lead in his absence. Paul’s epistles to the churches that he established make up over one-fourth of the New Testament. St. Paul is truly the greatest missionary in Church history. This is the reason the Church has given him the title “Apostle to the Nations”, for his efforts to single handedly spread the Good News of Christ to many parts of the then known world. May we too my beloved, imitate his zeal and love for Christ!

How exciting! We reached the end of another great Greek School year. Our students have not only learned, but exhibited happiness in learning about our Greek language and culture. Their participation in the various programs was exceptional. I would like to thank you for your faith, trust, and commitment to the mission of St. Paul Greek School. It is your belief in the Greek education values that help us to sustain our school. We respect the scarifies each family makes to send their child to Greek School and we will continue to put your child first in everything we do! This was a very busy year and you as partners in education played a great role in making it a success. Please know that although the school year is over, the Greek school staff is already planning for next school year. We will certainly continue with our efforts to improve our curriculum and programs. Please check our website or call the office for updates to. Note that the dates of Summer Camp are now June
11—13 from 9:00 AM—2:00 PM. This is a unique and exciting camp designed to highlight the creative and playful sides of children all in a Greek educational environment. I wish everyone in our community a healthy, safe, and happy summer! Remember to enjoy and even if you speak one word of Greek each day—it’s an accomplishment.

Orthodox Christian Stewardship… ~ Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America
...is a way of life, which acknowledges accountability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Becoming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we affirm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Stewardship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which they have been blessed.
An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the Church. The parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith to become practicing Stewards. Each year the Steward is expected to carefully review his or her personal circumstances and make a commitment of time, talent, and treasure to support the Parish and her Ministries, which in turn support the National Ministries of our Archdiocese, Metropolises, and institutions.
In Oriented Leadership their book on Orthodox Christian leadership, Williams and McKibben define stewardship as the call of the faithful to share willingly the gifts that God has bestowed on them, including sharing these gifts for God’s work. Stewardship is devotion and service to God and His Church as persons, as families, as a Parish, as a Metropolis, as a National Church, and as the Church Universal. Stewardship is our active commitment to use ALL our time, talent, and treasure for the benefit of humankind in grateful acknowledgement of Christ’s redeeming love.
Stewardship is caring for the needs of others. Stewardship is offering one's self to God as He offered Himself to us. Stewardship is what a person does after saying "I believe..." as proof of that belief. - Williams and McKibben in Oriented Leadership
In the words of the late Fr. William Chiganos of Holy Apostles Church (Westchester, IL),“…people don’t give to need; they give to vision...Church people don’t stretch their giving because of need to meet the budget; they give more because they are able to see a vision of people being reached and God’s purposes being accomplished in the life of the church and its ministry.” Parishes with successful Orthodox Christian Stewardship Programs have found that incredible support is unleashed from Stewards who unselfishly and joyfully offer their time, talent and treasures, which in turn enhances the spirituality and ministry of the local parish.

Dad ~ Anonymous
God took the strength of a mountain, The majesty of a tree, The warmth of a summer sun, The calm of a quiet sea, The generous soul of nature, The comforting arm of night, The wisdom of the ages, The power of the eagle's flight, The joy of a morning in spring, The faith of a mustard seed, The patience of eternity, The depth of a family need, Then God combined these qualities, When there was nothing more to add, He knew his masterpiece was complete, And so, he called it Dad.
