Tips for a Blessed Summer Vacation Travel Blessings
Take advantage of God’s grace covering your summer trips and vacations. Shortly before you go, have
the traveling prayers (land, sea, or air) prayed over you and have your car (or other mode of
transportation) blessed. Your priest is certainly willing and waiting! Once on the road, the driver can
bless the vehicle and those fellow travelers with a short prayer, “Lord, bless this vehicle and keep us
safe. Amen.” If you see any accidents, make the sign of the cross and pray for those involved. When
you arrive safely at your destination, give thanks to God.
Family Prayers
These days, there are few opportunities like a vacation (whether extravagant or just camping in the
back yard) to have the whole family on the same schedule. Use this togetherness as a time to pray
together, simple prayers in the morning, evening, and meals. Take some little icons and set them up.
Their presence alone will bless your time together, and they are a good reminder to pray.
Downtime
If we keep busy all the time, vacation plans can sometimes become more demanding than just staying
at home. Plan the ideal “do it all” vacation and then cut the activities in half; less is more. Build in
personal downtime for each family member so that the vacation doesn’t end up being more work than
it is relaxing.
Worship
Find out from your priest, the Church Office, friends, or Google which churches are in the area you are
vacationing in. This is a good opportunity to visit another parish. If you are not going to be near a
church on a Sunday or feast day, set time of prayers, devotion, and reflection.
Stewardship
With school out, summer activities underway, and family vacations in the works, it is easy to miss a
regular tithe here and there. We can all help the parish get through this summer financial slump by
planning ahead and getting our tithes to the Church Office before an absence.

Graduation & Youth Recognition Day—May 21, 2017
We had many smiling faces as we recognized our Graduates of the Class of 2017, as well as our youth who participate in the Church School program and serve as Altar Servers. Many thanks to those who offer ministry to our youth, especially as Church School teachers and helpers, and Altar Server leaders: Dn. Elias Corey, Christy Ellis, Danny Tanoos, Jeremiah & Jennifer Turner, Cache Ellis, Karah Ellis, Gina White, Maria David, Daniel & Paula Powell, and Jim & Tricia Tanoos. The parish community of St. George Terre Haute offers numerous programs and ministries for our youth and young adults—it’s up to parents to make sure their children participate! Again, congratulations to our Graduates who each received a gift of either an Orthodox Study Bible or Icon on behalf of our parish community. May God bless you!

St. Sampson the Hospitable—June 27
St. Sampson the Hospitable was the son of rich and illustrious Roman parents. In his youth he received an excellent education studying the medical arts healing the sick without charge. After the death of his parents St. Sampson generously distributed alms and set his slaves free, preparing to go into the wilderness.
With this intent in mind he soon journeyed from Rome
to the East. But the Lord directed him onto a different
path, that of service to neighbor, and so St. Sampson
came to Constantinople. Settling into a small house, he
began to take in homeless wanderers, the poor and the
sick, and he attended to them. The Lord blessed the
efforts of St. Sampson and endowed him with the
power of wonderworking. He healed the sick not only
through being a skilled physician, but also as a bearer of the grace of God. News of St.
Sampson spread abroad. The patriarch heard of his great virtue and ordained him to the
holy priesthood. It was revealed to the grievously ill Emperor Justinian (527-565), that he
could receive healing only through St. Sampson. In praying, the saint put his hand on
the afflicted area, and Justinian was healed. In gratitude the emperor wanted to reward
his healer with silver and gold, but the saint refused and instead asked Justinian to build
a home for the poor and the sick. The emperor readily fulfilled his request.
St. Sampson devoted the rest of his life to serving his neighbor. He survived into old age and after a short illness he departed peacefully to the Lord. The saint was buried at the church of Martyr Mocius, and many healings were effected at his grave. His hospice remained open, and the saint did not cease to care for the suffering. At the request of an admirer of St. Sampson the hospice was transformed into a church, and beside it a new edifice was built for the homeless. During the time of a powerful fire at Constantinople the flames did not touch the hospice of St. Sampson. Through his intercession a heavy rain quenched the fire.
Troparion (Tone 8) of St. Sampson the Hospitable:
In thy patience thou hast won thy reward, O righteous Father. Thou didst persevere unceasingly in prayer; thou didst love the poor, and didst provide for them in all things. Wherefore, intercede with Christ our God, O blessed and godly-minded Sampson, that our souls be saved.

Ss. Mary & Martha—June 4
Ss. Mary and Martha are the sisters of Lazarus (commemorated on the Saturday before Palm Sunday and October 17) whom Jesus raised from the dead, which is detailed in the Gospel of John. These siblings lived in Bethany and were followers and disciples of our Lord. Ss. Mary and Martha are also considered Holy Myrrh-bearers (commemorated on the Third Sunday of Pascha), belonging to the group of women who were present at the Crucifixion and went to the Tomb to anoint the Body of our Lord. After the murder of the holy Archdeacon Stephen a persecution against the Jerusalem Church broke out, and Righteous Lazarus was cast out of Jerusalem. The holy sisters then assisted their brother in the proclaiming of the
Gospel in various lands. They reposed in Cyprus, where their brother became the first Bishop of Kition after his resurrection from the dead. We do not know how they died. The Scriptural accounts which relate the interactions between Ss. Mary and Martha and our Lord are Matthew 26:6-13, Luke 10:38-42, John 11:1-44.
Troparion (Tone 3) of Ss. Mary & Martha:
Since ye believed in Christ with strong and ardent faith, and ever worshipped His divine and mighty deeds, ye both adorned yourselves with all the splendor of sacred virtues. With your holy brother now, ye are also vouchsafed to dwell with the ranks of Saints on high, O ye sisters of Lazarus; and with him, O wise Mary and Martha, ye pray for us all unto the Master.
