Letting the Shepherd Lead As I grew up in my hometown, every year around Memorial Day, some of the leaders in the community made an effort to erect crosses in a conspicuous place with the names of every person who had given their life in service to our country. In keeping with the old traditions of this holiday, formerly known as Decorations Day, flags and flowers were placed at each of these crosses. My grandmother's first husband gave his life in the Korean Conflict; so most years, we would drive to the location of the Memorial Day display and ride by slowly to make sure his cross was decorated. Memorial Day is the occasion that unofficially marks the beginning of summer, and often the air is filled with the aroma of barbeque. I have never quite bought into that type of celebration for this holiday. As I was reading about this day, I found that Congress, for the first time, passed a resolution in 1950 requesting that the President, then Truman, issue a proclamation asking Americans to "observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designate a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer." Presidents from that day forward have consistently issued such proclamations, asking for people to pray at 3:00 P.M. With certainty, this statement from our Congress captures the sentiment I want to pursue each year on the last Monday in May. The Baptist Faith and Message states in Article 16, "It is the duty of Christians to seek peace with all men on principles of righteousness…" and continues to say, "…the true remedy for the war spirit is the gospel of our Lord. The supreme need of the world is the acceptance of His teachings in all the affairs of men and nations, and the practical application of His law of love." Remembering in prayer that true and lasting peace comes from Jesus Christ is always a worthy cause. As a Christian honoring Memorial Day, pray with Romans 12:17-21 in mind. Paul discusses a believer's need to strive for peace with everyone. Verse 21 says, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." The absence of soldiers who faced the horrors of combat and gave their lives for their country, as well as the presence of their grieving families, reminds us of the ravages of war. Pray on Memorial Day for those families most affected. If you do celebrate this holiday with a barbeque, pray about inviting an estranged friend, relative, or neighbor. Include that person in your effort to strive for peace. Pray for God to show His grace and goodness to us all through the peace that only Christ can provide. Finally, pray for all men and nations to surrender to the Prince of Peace. I Thessalonians 5:23 tells us, “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through…” Pastor Steven
