Superintendent’s LetterDear Friends,

One of the chores I have to do early in the New Year is to take my rather aged car to the garage to put it through the MOT. I take it each year in fear and trepidation wondering if the mechanic will ring me up afterwards and break the bad news that it’s simply going to cost too much money to put all things right that need doing, and it’s only fit to make the trip to the breakers yard! Thankfully so far my car has always just about got through! There are always a few jobs that need doing to it, mostly not costing too much, and its general well-being is fine. I know with over 150,000 miles on the clock its working life is coming to an end, and when I think how far you can travel, going that number of miles it’s quite an

amazing feat.

It can be tempting to think about the annual Covenant Service as a sort of spiritual MOT in which we may judge ourselves to see if we have failed or passed! For example; is there poverty in our worship, formality and selfishness in our prayers, do we neglect fellowship and the means of grace, or is our witness for Christ hesitant? If we pass we pat ourselves on the back, if we fail we may try to tinker with things in our lives so that we do better next time.

Thankfully the Covenant Service is not an examination test. It is in the context of worship an affirmation for us that Christ has many services to be done, and a challenge for us to accept in obedience, God’s plan for our lives whatever the consequence will be? Sometimes God’s will for us is suited to our natural inclinations and material interests and we receive honour as we do it, but on other occasions it will be contrary to both and bring us reproach.

I was deeply challenged on a recent pastoral visit when a person asked me if I was willing to die for my faith. I tried to give an honest answer saying that if the situation was ever to arise, I hope and pray that God would give me the strength to remain faithful to Christ and to face whatever fate may lie ahead for me. In the Central Norfolk Circuit we mark Holocaust Memorial Day with a service at Stibbard Methodist Church on Thursday 27th January at 7.30 pm. During the service I have been asked to read the final sermon written by Pastor Schneider, a German minister martyred by the Nazis for his outspokenness against the regime of Hitler. He was a similar age to me when he was murdered, which only serves to remind me what cost faithful discipleship to Jesus Christ can bring. Thank God we live in more peaceful times, yet the call of Christ still demands sacrifice and commitment. Soon we approach Lent and we must examine what it means to follow Jesus Christ in 2011.God BlessYour Minister and friend, Andrew

From the Editor’s desk 2011. Another new year. A new challenge maybe but a promise of more blessings

ahead for us. I wonder what the Lord has ready in 2011 for

the CN Circuit to do. One thing is certain, that we must grow. It is for us to use the dates printed here to visit our other chapels and to support them. Yet while we give priority to our neighbours we can also share and receive with those further away. We are connected together in a circuit. My secondary school motto was ‘Unitate Fortior’ - Stronger in Unity. That’s us; a united circuit, a strong circuit. By the way, don’t leave copies of CNCN in your chapel. Each one costs nearly 20p and each amount adds up for the Circuit. Your contributions towards the year’s copies will be appreciated if you put your envelope with just CNCN written on it in the offertory for your treasurers; but isn’t 20p each, good value?

Please remember. Send dates and news for up to 6th June to me by Sunday 14th March at [email protected] or at my address in the Plan. Every blessing. Brian Lawrence

Hindringham Methodist guildWhen in 2009 Hindringham Guild celebrated its 60th Anniversary it was still being led by two of its founder members, Charlie and Edna Greves. Charlie & Edna are still prominent members of the Guild but have delegated the finding of speakers etc. to a small committee. We hope that our efforts are providing a varied and stimulating programme for our members – but it’s salutary to remember that, even with the help of word processors and emails, it takes four of us to do what Edna & Charlie did for so many years using pens and paper! Our programme for February and March is as follows (except where otherwise indicated our meetings are on Wednesday evenings, starting at 7.15 p.m.):-2nd February. “Rose Cottage Revisited” - a talk by Rev. Colin Garwood of Wells-next-the-Sea. A retired URC minister, Colin has for many years played an important role in the life of the Fakenham, Wells & Holt Circuit. In his popular articles for the Circuit’s monthly magazine his imagination took him to a country cottage where he learned the stories of folklore and legend associated with the plants and trees in the garden.9th February. A wildlife slide show by Gary Smith of Hindringham. Gary is a brilliant photographer and joint author with Andrew Bloomfield of the superbly illustrated book “North Norfolk’s Wildlife”.16th February. “Coast Watch” - a talk by Alan Ducker of Hindringham who is a volunteer with the Coast Watch at Wells-next-the-Sea.23rd February. A talk by Rev. James Muggleton of Hindringham. James is vicar of seven parishes including three (Hindringham, Thursford and Fulmodeston) where there are Methodist chapels. In his love of church music he is thoroughly ecumenical (he’s a great admirer of the hymns of Fred Pratt Green) and this evening he’ll be introducing us to the world of “Gospel Music.”2nd March. An evening of community singing led by Guild member Jean Benson – come and join in songs you have known and loved.9th March. A meeting for “Fair Trade Fortnight” at which professional cake-maker Joanna Burdett will give a demonstration of how to prepare some delicious comestible using fairly traded ingredients and Traidcraft rep Mary Cundy will tell how the Fair Trade movement has helped the producers of those ingredients.16th March. An evening with Stephen Miles and Alan Heath. Two of Fulmodeston’s best known and respected inhabitants. Church Warden Stephen is an opera singer of international repute, Alan is an accomplished musician on both key-board and harp. Come and enjoy an evening of good music.23rd March. “A visit to Oberammergau” – an illustrated talk by Local Preacher and Newsletter editor Brian Lawrence of Watton. Like Brian, many folk from the Circuit attended the 2010 Oberammergau Passion Play. His talk will bring back memories for them and introduce the rest of us to the beauties of the area in which the play is staged.29th March. A talk on “The Druids” by Steve & Jo Parish. Experts in the history of the Iron Age Celts and their religion, Steve and Jo run the Eceni Study Centre at Wells. Please note that, as Wednesday 30 th

March is the date of the Circuit Meeting, this Guild meeting will be held on Tuesday 29 th . 6th April. An evening with the Martham Singers. The annual visit from this choir always provides one of the Guilds most popular meetings. NB: to allow time for the choir members to reach Hindringham, this meeting will commence at 7.45 p.m .13th April. AGM (plus, no doubt, the usual short talk by someone about something!)

Charlie Greve's 90th birthday party on Sunday 21st November at Hindringham chapel.

Charlie is blowing out the candles on his cake.

The chapel was packed from 4.00 pm when family and friends and the church family from across the circuit gathered for tea & cake. At 6.30 Rev Andrew led a cafe style service to a congregation of over 70 preaching from I Cor 13 about costly sacrificial love. Grand daughter Lisa read the lesson and son Malcolm gave a personal tribute to his father where he made mention of Charlie's involvement in the D Day landings.

Never doubt the power of a small group of committedpeople to change the world. That’s about the only wayit ever happened in the past.

News Items: Concerts.Elizabeth Lodge, (Liz), organist at West Raynham chapel, is keen to hear from anyone interested in having a concert to raise funds for their church. She composes classical music for the piano and has recorded a CD, “Inspirations”. All she needs is a power socket as she has her own portable digital piano! Elizabeth would love to be able to play a series of concerts for the spring. She can be contacted on 01485 528744.

A ParableIt was a chilly, overcast day when the horseman spied a sparrow lying on its back in the middle of the roadway. Reining in his mount, he inquired of the fragile creature, “Why are you lying upside down like that?” “I heard the heavens are going to fall down today”, replied the bird. The horseman laughed, “I suppose you think your spindly legs can hold up the heavens?” “One does what one can”, said the little sparrow, “One does what one can.”

FlowersA new business was opening and the owner’s friends wanted to send him flowers for the occasion. They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the message on the card, “Rest in Peace”.The owner was angry and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist replied, “Sir, I’m really sorry for the mistake, but rather that being angry, you should imagine this. Somewhere there is a funeral taking place today and they have your flowers with a note saying, ‘Congratulations on your new location!’”

THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER

"How much am I bid?" The auctioneer said, As he offered each lot for sale. "A million for the painting!" "Two million for the vase!" And they paid up, cash on the nail.

"How much am I bid?" The slave-trader said, As he offered his captives for sale. "Five hundred for the girls!" "Six hundred for the boys!" And they paid up, cash on the nail.

"How much am I bid?" Judas Iscariot said, As he offered the Saviour for sale. "Thirty pieces of silver Would seem to suffice!" And they paid up, cash on the nail.

"How much am I bid?" The wicked Satan said, As he offered my soul up for sale. "My Life as a ransom!" Said Jesus my Lord. And He paid up, cash on the nail.

(Colin Garwood – 2010)

Circuit ChoirThe Circuit Choir will reconvene for the Easter Songs of Praise at Fakenham, Sunday 24th April. The first rehearsal will be on Friday, 18th February and rehearsals will follow on Fridays 25th February, 4th, 18th, 25th March, 1st, 15th April and probably Thursday 21st April.Any past members are very welcome, together with any newcomers who love to praise God in song! Contact: Pippa Cook on 01328 829324Thank you to all who supported me through the first adventure! A recording of the Songs of Praise at Thursford is available. Contact Pippa for details.

Circuit Prayer FellowshipThe Circuit Prayer Fellowship grew out of the Fakenham, Wells and Holt prayer meeting, formed about 10 years ago to pray for the needs of the Circuit. This is why, at present, most of the meetings are scheduled for the northern part of the circuit. It usually attracts 8 – 12 people, but more are always welcome! The meetings are held on the first Monday in the month except for bank holidays, when they move to 2nd Monday. They usually last for about an hour; sometimes starting with a cup of tea or coffee, but have no ‘typical’ format. Different individuals lead the meeting in the way they feel led and comfortable. They may belong to the host church, but not necessarily. If any Church in the Circuit would like to host a meeting in 2012, we should be pleased to know, but would ask that someone from the host Church is present at their meeting.
