COURT OF APPEALS CLEARS WAY FOR PARKMERCED
REDEVELOPMENT
THE SFPUC OFFERS FREE WATER-WISE EVALUATIONS
In what may be the final hurdle
to the redevelopment of
Parkmerced was cleared on August
14th with a 3-0 ruling by the First
District Court of Appeals in the
case of Parkmerced vs. the City
and County of San Francisco.
In May, the Court heard oral
arguments regarding the case.
Lawyer Stuart Flashman
represented plaintiffs San
Francisco Tomorrow and the
Parkmerced Action Coalition.
Deputy City Attorney Brian
Crossman represented Parkmerced
Investment Partners and the City
and County of San Francisco. One
argument made by Flashman was
that the 1986 City Proposition M limited the amount of development
in San Francisco, specifically the
size and scope at Parkmerced. In
the Court’s 3-0 ruling Presiding
Justice J. Anthony Cline stated that
planners need not insist on line-by-
line compliance of Proposition M,
but rather that the project is
consistent with overall goals that
required new developments to fit
San Francisco’s official policies
such as open space, affordable
housing, displacement of tenants,
transit policies, energy efficiency,
earthquake preparedness, and the
preservation of existing
neighborhoods. The ruling,
affirming the redevelopment project,
means that the project may move
forward.
Parkmerced Investment Partners
has filed a phase application, with
the City in late September, which is
required to give notice of the intent
to subsequently start the process of
engaging architects, contractors, and
consultants. Under the development
agreement with the City and County
of San Francisco certain community
benefits packages will kick in with
each development phase of the 30-
year build-out.
The developers are now looking at a
possible groundbreaking in late
summer or fall of 2015.
The San Francisco Public
Utilities Commission (SFPUC)
invites San Francisco residents to
participate in their free Water-
Wise Evaluations program. The
program includes a
comprehensive, site-specific
consultation from a water-
efficiency expert.
The water-efficiency expert will
visit your property to assess your
water use and needs. The person
will walk you through your home
and garden and provide
information about your water use,
point out potential water savings
measures, and help identify leaks
that can cause increased water and
energy bills. These evaluations can
provide you with free devices and
materials, including water-
efficient showerheads, faucet
aerators and standard toilet repair
parts. The evaluation will
determine the efficiency of water-
using fixtures and appliances and
provide information about
incentives available for making
improvements, as well as provide
tips for efficient outdoor water use. The SFPUC encourages
homeowners associations, and
multi-family property managers to
utilize SFPUC services to
collectively evaluate a property’s
water use on a unit-by-unit level.
There is also a Water
Conservation Checklist for tips and
recommendations to improve the
efficiency of your property. Visit
sfwater.org/conservation for the
checklist.
For more information or to
scheduled an appointment for a
Water-Wise Evaluation contact the
Water Conservation section of the
SFPUC at (415) 551-4730.

OCEANVIEW SUPERMARKET:
NO PROGRESS FROM
LEASEHOLDER ALBERTSONS
Albertsons has made no effort to sit
down and meet with members from
the Mayor’s Office of Economic and
Workforce Development, Supervisor’s
Norman Yee’s Office and Executive
Board Members of METNA, as has
been requested by all three groups.
METNA Vice-President Marc
Christensen has been pushing for a
meeting to bring all parties together to
come to a workable solution to bring
in a quality grocery supermarket to the
vacated space. It is hoped that
leaseholder Albertsons will agree to
meet in the very near future to so that
we can work together to solve the
current vacancy and bring a much
needed service back to our
neighborhood.
CLEANUP ON BROTHERHOOD
The Department of Public Works
(DPW) is making the Brotherhood
Way Greenbelt a priority in cleaning
up portions of the area that have
recently seen several homeless
encampments due to the overgrowth
of the trees and shrubs.
The raising of the canopy of trees
and the removal of weeds and non
native brush, plus the removal of trash
left by squatters has returned the
greenbelt to a very safe and good
looking environment. We thank DPW
for their efforts to beautify the area.
METNA REMINDER
DOG FECES PICKUP:
Health Code, Section 40 While the vast majority of pet owners
carry bags and clean up after their pets,
there are still a few residents that do
not. This is a public health issue.
Health Code, Section 40 states: “Dogs
to be controlled so as not to commit
nuisances. It shall be unlawful for the
owner or custodian of any dog who
permits said dog to defecate on public
or private property, or who walks a dog
without carrying a container suitable
for the removal and disposal of dog
excrement.” Please be a responsible
neighbor and always pick up after
your dog. Let’s work together to keep
our neighborhood clean and safe.
