COUNTRY CLUB NEWSBy Kathleen Walk

June is the month that summer begins. It is the time the flowers are beautiful, and especially the month for honeysuckle and roses. Birds are singing and the golfers are happy. Life is good.

The Executive Order signed by the Governor will keep us in place until June 5. Our parties and social scrambles are on hold for the time being. We are considering an event for July 4 weekend. It all depends on the restrictions we will have to abide by. We want everyone to be healthy and safe.

There is still time to buy a memorial brick. The bricks already purchased can be viewed on the clubhouse patio. Please see the flyer in this issue of the Mews News.

Special thanks to our wonderful Mews News Editors, Geoff Blake, Maureen Cronin and Claire Harty.

Cheers.

GOLF UPDATEThanks to new Reopening Guidance, golfers

can now play in Foursomes. If using a golf cart, all players must still be in individual carts. Individual lessons have begun again. Watch for information coming soon about league play. If you haven’t paid your yearly membership, it’s time to stop by the Golf Shop trailer and do so!

You might have met her during the 2019 election when she walked the Mews with Borough Council Candidate Michael Milano. This year Chris and Mike are teaming up to run as Democrats for the two council seats that open up in 2021. They want to hear from you, and plan to have a Zoom Town Hall meeting in the near future to get your input on what matters most to you, and plan on how to best represent your interests.

In the meantime, you can reach out to Chris at [email protected] or Mike at [email protected] if you want to share your own thoughts and ideas.

CORRECTIONIn the May edition of The Mews News, the

article entitled “REMEMBERING CAPTAIN ELEANOR GRACE ALEXANDER ON MEMORIAL DAY 2020” was classified as submitted by Jerry Fitzpatrick. The actual author of the news story was John Nugent, a Mews News resident and veteran of the Viet Nam War. The Mews News regrets its error and apologizes to Mr. Nugent.

BOOK BUFFS

The June selection for the Book Buffs is Michelle Obama’s Becoming. The meeting will be on Tuesday, June 16 at 4 PM. The format for the meeting will be determined as guidance evolves on the opening of the Clubhouse, but at this time it appears that we will be having a Zoom event. For those who may be interested, Michelle Obama reads the Audible version of Becoming, and there is also a Netflix documentary on the book tour for Becoming.

ATTENTION: BRIDGE PLAYERSby Jo Tull

When we again have access to our lovely enlarged Clubhouse, we wish you would consider joining one of the bridge groups here at the Mews. There is the ‘regular’ bridge group (Chicago scoring) which meets every week on Thursday at 1 PM in the clubroom. There is also a partner duplicate bridge (you bring your own partner) on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month, again in the clubroom at 1 PM. There are also opportunities to substitute in either of these groups.

In addition, there are two-table duplicate groups, one of which meets on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month and the other on the 1st and 3rd Friday of each month at 12:30 PM. These groups also need subs from time to time.

While golf keeps you fit physically, bridge will help keep you mentally fit.

A reminder--this game is not exclusively for women—we heartily welcome the male population as well. Come join us!

Give me a call with any questions you may have.

As June is upon us, we note that the golf course re-opened three weeks ago to the cheers of our community. Churches, boardwalks, beaches and the construction on the Clubhouse are also now moving forward with mea-sured reopening approval. In May we were able to enlist our Mayor, Chris Campion, to prevail on the senior code official from Spring Lake, where we obtain our building permits, to allow construction to restart on the Clubhouse. Restarting the work has experienced some delays since subcontractors had begun to work on other jobs. But, we are now told that the project will be completed by the July 4th weekend.

Since previously scheduled Mews events were can-celled in May and June, we are looking forward to opening the Clubhouse during the 4th of July weekend. We have discussed tentative plans to allow small groups of residents to tour the new facility throughout the day. This way every-one who wishes to take the tour of the completed facility may do so safely. In the coming weeks there will be more information forthcoming on this topic and the plans for use of the Clubhouse to schedule programs, games, and events.

The FMCA Board of Directors has been meeting each month with a full agenda. April’s meeting was conducted via email with all committee chairs forwarding their re-ports. Affirmative unanimous votes in favor of the reports were communicated to Traye Blackburn, our Manager, by the individual board members. Our May meeting was held live in the main Clubhouse room without community participation but with proper social distancing. The June meeting will follow this same format, but we hope to have our July meeting with full community participation.

During the Covid-19 months we and our neighbors have tried to patronize local restaurants once or twice a week. Most of these businesses have convenient pick up or delivery. We encourage everyone to support our local small businesses especially in these next few months as they try to reopen. They are a most important component of our community. It may seem very protracted, but life as we knew it will return.

Again, I want to offer you an opportunity to have an impact on the life or lives of those in greatest need. I recently received a letter from Kim Guadagno, President and CEO of Fulfill, our local food bank. The following are excerpts from her letter: “… your gift will put food on the tables… to parents who have lost their jobs and can no longer feed their families… to children who are no longer receiving after- school meals… and to seniors who are hungry, frightened and alone. …We have never seen an emergency of this scale. The need for food has never

been more urgent.”If you can, please donate any amount to our local food

I can see the faintest, smallest bit of light at the end of the tunnel! The first bright light is the limited opening of the FM Golf Course! Operations for the golf course are extremely limited, but nevertheless it is open for play. It is refreshing to see players out on the golf course. I want to thank Dan O’Malley, our Head Golf Professional, Joe Beaudoin, our Golf Course Superintendent, the FM Golf Committee and the FM Board of Directors for all the hard work that they have put in to open our course. We all closely followed what was happening with golf courses in the surrounding states as they began to open. We developed our own plan to open so once allowed, we could hit the ground running and that is exactly what we did! This is the first phase of opening golf facilities in the state. If this works out, regulation should be lessened at some point; then we may be able to operate some of our usual leagues and tournaments.

Another thing that shows a little promise is that we are now allowed to resume construction at the FM Clubhouse. The project was shut down for the past month. Now we are once again up and running and moving in the right direction. Completion will happen in the very near future.

I would like to give a shout out and thank you to the town of Spring Lake Heights and Mayor Chris Campion. The town administration has been very visible, approach-able and very helpful throughout these hard times. Mayor Campion has dropped off supplies to us numerous times and helped us out with any problem, when asked. Great Job Mr. Mayor and Spring Lake Heights, Thank you.

Live Oak Landscaping is using a smaller crew in the community to help properly “social distance”. That means they will now need two days to complete their service. Wednesday and Thursday will now be used as the landscaping days every week, weather permitting until further notice. As a rule of thumb (but not an exact sci-ence) Wednesday will see service on the eastern side of the community and Thursday will see service on the west side of the community. Using Linden Drive as the divider for east and west. Lastly the community-wide shrub trimming of green non-flowering shrubs, up to 12 feet high and up to 3-inch caliper is scheduled for the end of May/begin-ning of June. At that time, if you do not wish to have your shrubs trimmed be sure to put “no maintenance” flags in the immediate area of the planting(s). These flags can be obtained by contacting the FM Main Office.

We are now starting to see the very beginning of what our “new normal” may begin to look like. Masks, disin-fectants, gloves, no large gatherings and social distancing will be required on all fronts in our community for the near future. We are working on plans to put these policies

into place under the restrictions that come from the State of New Jersey.

Unfortunately, the FM community pool did not open on Memorial Day Weekend and will remain closed through the rest of June at this time. We will re-assess the situation according to what the State of New Jersey will allow mid-month (June). We will keep the community abreast of any new information through our email system with periodic community updates and pressing news.

The FM Main Office will continue to operate through email [email protected] or phone 732-449-8565 only. There will not be any direct face to face interaction and this policy will continue into the foreseeable future. If you need anything from the FM Main Office at all, please use the two forms of communication and we will get you whatever you need! A drop mailbox has also been installed outside the office for the transferring of paperwork and HOA fee collection. Don’t forget you can also mail your monthly HOA payment to the FM Main Office.

Remember to visit our website at www.fairwaymews.org to find all kinds of community information that in-cludes: FM Rules & Regulations, Local Association information, FMCA Board meeting schedule, FM Main Office Holiday schedule and much, much more. You can even read the Mews News online through the website!

Make sure to get your dryer vent cleaned and proof (a receipt) to the FM Main Office. Lastly, if you have not done so yet, fill out a visitor access form for your guests to enter the community through the front gate. A little neighborly courtesy can go a very long way in these trying times! Take care of yourself and each other; we are all in this together. Stay Safe!

GOLF TIPStay Centered, Do not Sway.

Swaying is a swing error where the hips of a player move laterally during the golf swing. During the back-swing, the hips will slide towards the back foot. Then during the downswing, the hips will slide towards the front foot. This error makes it exceedingly difficult to make consistent contact. Focus on staying centered by keeping your chest over the ball throughout the swing ensuring that you rotate all the way through. What’s great about this tip is you can practice it without a club or a ball and be on your way to more consistent contact!

BIRDInG WITH ROBInby Robin Verhose

On May 5 at 2:15pm I saw my first hummingbird of the season. I was walking through the living room when I saw it, hovering over the bird bath. I always stand in amazement (no, not at attention!) because I never know what I am seeing at first and, of course, I was WAY too late for the camera. As I am typing this article, it came back! I think the orange begonia that I bought at Shop-Rite is the big attraction. I also have one of those solar power thingies in the bird bath, that too could be the attraction. With all the commotion that was outside with the power washing that our section of the Mews just received, I was very surprised to see our little hummer friend humming around!

In case you forgot, the regular hummingbird East of the Mississippi is our Ruby-Throated hummingbird, Archilo-chus colubris. The good ones (the colorful ones and much size variation) are west of the Mississippi and of course in the tropics. Once in a while, they are seen around here. Again, the male has the color but the female is drab. Ruby-Throated hummingbirds’ status seems to be improving slightly in the Garden State. ☺

Another bird that I just love but rarely see is the Baltimore Oriole, Icterus galbula. This bird is just passing through but can often be heard in the early morning hours…such a sweet, sweet song. Sometimes I am fooled and think at first it is a Robin but once I get my ‘bird ear’ on, I realize this songster has an entirely different song and style with a few clicks thrown in for good measure. The most enjoyable part of their singing is the clarity.

A very interesting question was posed to me today from a loyal reader regarding the Barn Swallows. Do the same ones return year after year? The nesting location gene has probably been passed on from generation to generation. I find it extremely interesting that these birds know to return to the colonies established long ago by their ancestors.

Awhile back I mentioned Bird Friendly Coffee. I thought I would share the link with you. https://birdsandbeans-coffee.com/

Wishing everyone Good Birding either out and about or just in your own backyard.!

A TRIBuTe TO ALL PARenTSAs we celebrated Mother’s Day on May 10, 2020

andCelebrate Father’s Day on June 21, 2020

By Joan BakerJust thinking about my Mother and Father brings tears to my eyes. They were a very dear couple who quietly com-

bined their lives and talents to provide all that was necessary and much more than words can say to make the lives of my sisters and me all we could ask for.

Only a few months ago while looking for some books in our garage, I was thrilled to find my parents Wedding Portrait dated September 2, 1929. What a joy to find the portrait in perfect condition, even though it has survived many moves and changes of climate for ninety years.

Everyone who visits my home gets to enjoy such a treasure, as well as the photos of my own children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

And, as a bonus there was another portrait of their entire Wedding Party including eleven smiling faces of sisters, bridesmaids, groomsmen, and my grandfather too. As I am the oldest child of that generation, I can name all the par-ticipants.Now for a change of subject . . . .

Are you looking forward to that first tomato sandwich from your own tomato patch? Look no further! To be suc-cessful in this venture, you must follow these directions:1) As the most reliable in a small plot of land, choose an area that enjoys sun at least three quarters of each day and has

a water supply close by for a daily drink. Clear the soil of all weeds, stones and other debris. Prepare the soil with 2 or 3 handfuls of fertilizer.

2) Mark your calendar to sow the seeds of your favorite varieties about 4 to 6 weeks before the average date of spring’s last killing frost in your area. This information is available on line and from your local Cooperative Extension Office.

3) Purchase your seeds from a reputable dealer who has a wide variety from which to choose. Make a list of the botani-cal name of your seeds and remember the information on these packets are written by very selective suppliers. You may want to keep a record of this information should you wish to repeat your success in future years.

AND I wish you much success with your tomato patch!!

THE FIRST AMENDMENT-A SNAPSHOT

Our subject is the following: “Congress shall make no law …or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…).”

This hallowed right is the embodiment of our ability to express our opinions, yet as with every right, there are limitations. For example, in a Supreme Court case, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes opined that the right of free speech is not unchecked. For example one could not scream out, “Fire” in a crowded theater, this perhaps inciting a hysteri-cal response which could cause injuries.

This Constitutional right has been construed as ap-plying to state action, meaning that Federal, State and Municipalities cannot impede the right of free expression. Yet not all speech is covered by this Amendment. For ex-ample, in New Jersey, a condo owner wanted to express his choice for an election by placing a sign on his condo, claiming that the regulation prohibiting the sign violated his right of free speech. The Court sided with the condo association, because regulating the prohibition was not one passed by the Federal, State and Municipality. It did not apply to private organizations.

In your non-governmental workplace, you do not have

an absolute right to express yourself, and you could be fired for speech that is detrimental to your employer. In other words, the right is not absolute.

The freedom of expression protects symbolic expres-sion, such as wearing armbands, waving flags and burning flags or draft cards.

Certain categories of free speech are not protected from government restrictions. The main categories are incitement (see above), fraud, defamation, obscenity and threats. In other words, you cannot defame a person by slander (oral) or libel (written). However, this does not apply to persons who have world presence. In New York Times v. Sullivan, the Supreme Court decided that a public figure could not sue for defamation unless the statement or article was false and known to the utterer as false and that the injured party must prove actual malice. This gives the press a huge step-up and freedom in reporting the news.

In sum, you may have the right of free speech, but there may be consequences.

I hope you enjoyed our sojourn into the Constitution.

Father’s Day seems to run somewhat behind in the holiday card category. According to Hallmark, 72 million cards are sent then, a distant fourth behind Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. It manages to edge out the 40 million cards sent for Easter.

Although the holiday itself dates back to ancient times, its observation in the United States is credited to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Her father, a farmer, raised his family alone, after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. In 1910, Sonora decided that all fathers should be honored. However, it was not officially declared a holiday until President Richard Nixon made it one in 1972.

The official flower for Father’s Day is the rose. On that first Father’s Day, Sonora asked people to wear a white rose for deceased fathers and a red rose for a father who was living.

There are approximately 72.2 million fathers in the United States, according to the latest census. Seven per cent of them are stay-at-home dads.

Although called Father’s Day, the term Dad is more commonly used by children. Its origin traces back to the mid-16th century, perhaps imitative of a young child’s first syllables “da da.” The Etymology Dictionary states

the first usage was recorded circa 1500, but was probably much older, maybe even prehistoric

Spending on Dad once again is eclipsed by Mom. A survey by the National Retail Federation predicted, that spending would reach the $15.3 million dollar mark, while Mom’s presents would total about $23.1 billion. Dad’s most common gifts include brunch, dinner or some other outing, gift cards, electronic devices and clothing, often a tie.

Why a tie? The modern-day tie can be traced, again, to the 1600s, when mercenaries wore bright colored scarves as a sign of rank. Ties became popular in the late 1800s and were eventually mass-produced in the 1920s. For years, their unspoken purpose was as a status marker. The red power tie came into vogue in the 1980s and is often seen as a wardrobe staple in the political arena.

Father’s Day may be a little different this year. Unless their children still live at home, fathers may have to settle for a Skype or Facetime visit with their offspring. Hope-fully, our home bound existence will have been lifted and everyone can celebrate in person.

Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers and father figures! Sources used: Star-Ledger-June 17, 2018; Esquire

We’Re STILL In THIS TOGeTHeR BuT We neeD TO eAT!!by Geoff Blake

There is some light at the end of this long tunnel. By the time the June issue of the Mews News comes out, maybe there will be some lessening of restrictions. At least there’s golf, and the beaches are somewhat open. Now let’s get to some more food take-out!

Last month I wrote about some local “hangout” places. For this month I wanted to go a little more upscale. This way you can order food, get nicely dressed, and eat.

I’m sure most of you know of or have been to Fratello’s in Sea Girt. They are offering curbside pickup everyday from 3 to 8 PM. To order call 732-974-8833. They are offering their main menu and Family Trays and Platters. If you are not familiar with Fratello’s, their menu is basically Italian fare. Appetizers include items such as Oysters Gratinee, Garlic Shrimp, and a variety of clams and calamari dishes. Main courses include various pasta, chicken, steak, seafood and veal dishes. Prices are fairly reasonable, ranging in the $20’s and $30’s.

Larimar in Spring Lake is offering curbside pickup Wednesday through Sunday from 3-7:45 PM. To order call 732-359-6700. There is a limited menu but it’s pretty special. Entrees include Crab Cakes, Campanelle pasta, and chicken, short rib, and pork chop dishes. Prices again range in the $20’s to $30’s.

My personal favorite new restaurant to go to—when we can—is La Mondina. It’s located where Rella’s used to be on highway 71 in Brielle. They have curbside take-out and delivery, Wednesday to Sunday. The times vary, Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday 1-8 PM, Friday and Saturday 1-9 PM. To order call 732-612-8331. Their menu is basically Italian fare as well, with a bit of a flare. They of-fer gourmet pizzas, salads, and unique entrees, like Salmon and Saffron Risotto to different takes on pasta dishes and veal chops and chicken. They also serve trays of food for take-out. A half-tray feeds 10-12 people, a full tray feeds 15-20 people. These trays are a hefty price but you get a ton of food. Prices for the regular menu are reasonable, ranging in the $20’s and $30’s.

The restaurant arugala, from Point Pleasant opened a small second restaurant on Morris Avenue in Spring Lake town. They offer take-out seven days a week. To order call 732-974-2800. It’s quite an interesting menu. Appetizers range from $14.95-$16.95. You may order such varied apps as Brazilian Chicken Wings to an Eggplant Tower. The main menu offers mostly chicken and shrimp dishes, but they are not your ordinary dishes. How about ordering Godiva Chocolate Chicken? There are various pasta dishes

as well, like Lazy Lasagna and Grandma’s Tortellini, all priced at $18.95. The specials are all priced at $23.95 and include a Mahi Mahi dish, slow roasted pork, and others. I’m hungry writing about all these fine restaurants!

All the menus are on the websites for these restaurants. Order some take-out from these fine restaurants, and you won’t be disappointed. Hopefully, we will be able to go to these and other great restaurants in our area sooner than later. Until then, be safe, stay well!

The Corona Virus Pandemic has swept across the world. Some countries are beginning to see the slowing down of cases. Other nations are still seeing rising num-bers of infections and death. The United States’ death toll continues to rise and infections continue to escalate in some parts of the country. New York and New Jersey’s totals are the highest in the nation. African American and Hispanic rates of infection and death have been greater than the infec-tion and death rates of white Americans. Native American infection and death rates are proportionately higher than the rates for white Americans. Why are the rates for these ethnic groups so high?

There are different theories for this. The bottom line is that many African Americans and Hispanics are employed in many of the “front line worker” jobs in America. Let us not forget that many of these jobs, especially in the food service industry have been lost due to the shut down of the economy. Construction and landscaping jobs are coming back. Grocery workers and sanitation workers as well as transit workers are still going to work every day, clearly at some risk of infection.

Many workers throughout the country are out of work at the moment. Anger and frustration are mounting in many parts of the country. We can all understand the dilemma that many families are facing with bills piling up and no money to pay them. Demonstrations are happening in many states demanding restrictions and stay at home orders be lifted. Leaders say that we need to reopen the country and get back to work The economy is faltering. I don’t believe that anyone disagrees with that, but how do we do it safely? Will we ever go back to the “normalcy” we have lived with for most of our lives? These are questions that really have no substantial answers yet.

What should be bothersome to all of us is to see some demonstrations that have within their midst anti-govern-ment groups and white nationalists carrying confederate flags and even nooses. Groups like that are just looking for

ways to infiltrate the mainstream of frustrated people who just want to go back to work. Many of these hate groups are inciting violence against Asian-Americans. How dumb is that? Those Americans have nothing to do with this disease, but many Asian Americans are seeing increased anti-Asian bias. The only frustration we should feel towards other people at this time should be towards people who will not follow guidelines that have been set by our officials and supported by the scientific community. Doctors like Dr. Anthony Fauci and Dr. Deborah Birx do know a thing or two about pandemics. When we see signs calling for them to be fired and not to be listened to, that should outrage us.

This summer may be a very different one for all of us. Even if and when we “open up” the state I would hope that we all will practice some safety precautions so that there will not be a “second wave” of this virus. Stay safe and be well.

A neW WALKInG eXPeRIenCeBy Retiree Joe Fichter

Retirement has given me a new hobby—walking. Luckily for me, I retired to Spring Lake, a beautiful town, and a perfect place to walk. While there are several great places to walk in town, my favorite is on the boardwalk where the ocean air, the smell of the sea, and the sound of the surf create an ideal environment.

Generally, I walk three miles every other day. It takes me over an hour to walk from one pavilion to the next and back again. It took me a while to get used to the distance and the pace, but now I’m used to it. I walk for exercise and for thinking. I have found that walking alone gives me lots of time to remember the past and think about the future. Sometimes I find myself not really thinking about anything, and it’s then that I’m living in the present.

One of my favorite things to do while walking on the boardwalk is to say hello to everyone who passes. It feels great when you get a nice smile back, a ‘good morning,’ or simply a thumbs up. There are some people who prefer to look straight ahead while walking and would rather not interact with others, so they don’t make eye contact. They too are probably thinking about their pasts or their futures. That’s fine—to each their own.

Although I am retired now, I was boss my entire working life, and it’s a little tough to let that position go. So, I would like to institute a new rule for walkers. While wearing sunglasses when walking is again permitted, if you stop walking to talk with someone, you must remove your sunglasses if the conversation lasts more than 30 seconds. If you can’t see the eyes of the person with whom you are speaking, you might as well talk to his or her nose or lips or your own shoes. Eye contact is very important!

The best part of walking on the boardwalk, or anywhere for that matter, is when you have a partner with whom to talk and share a laugh. And the very best is when you’re walking with your honey holding hands. Eye contact is especially important in these circumstances. I find time spent like this to be relaxing and some of the most enjoyable moments in life. All is good. Please don’t miss it!
