Year 11s are taking their leadership very
seriously this year to help others. The
majority of Year 11 are Young School
Leaders (YSL) who are not only
concentrating on their academic studies,
but also on supporting charities,
organising events and helping within
school.
The Charity Young School Leaders
committee decided that they would like
to support a charity that helps
disadvantaged children in Romania. An
ex-student, Lois Rowling, is helping torun a project and she went back to
Romania at the end of October to
provide children with warm clothing
before the winter freeze. The committee
wanted to support Lois and the charity
by collecting warm, suitable clothing for
the children she will be visiting.
The charity Lois is working with is Aid for
Romanian Children (ARC). For more
information, visit them at
http://www.arccharity.org.
Staff and students were encouraged to
look in their familys wardrobes and
approach friends to find unwanted
clothing that they no longer needed to
help Romanian children from ages 2-16.
Clothes donated included hats, scarves,
gloves, tops, coats and jumpers etc.
We are delighted that when Lois visited
Romania, she was able to help clothe
442 orphaned children using clothes
donated from The MFG and other
sources - 5 suitcases were from The
MFG!
Pictured is Lois, with two Year 11 Young
School Leaders, Ellen Bowers and
Georgia Mitchell, as she collects the
large amount of donated clothes!

Dylan Hughes in Year 10 has
been nominated and accepted
on a nationwide programme run
by the Dame Kelly Holmes
Legacy Trust. He is one of only
20 young people in the country
to be accepted onto this
programme and is privileged tobe working with athlete Paul
Broadbent. As part of his
community project, Dylan
organised a charity sponsored
swim-a-thon on Sunday 23rd
September at 3.00pm at
Spenborough Pool to raise
awareness of the lack of access
for disabled swimmers.
Dylan said, Having successfullybeen selected for a mentorship
with the Dame Kelly Holmes
Legacy Trust, I have decided,
together with the support of
some fabulous school friends,
teachers and my mentor, to do a
sponsored swim to highlight the
lack of disabled swimming
lessons/clubs within our area. All
monies raised will go to the
Hollybank Trust, along with
donations made on our website.Hollybank Trust is an
inspirational organisation that
cares for children, young people
and adults with complex
disabilities. Hollybank provides
intensive medical care, therapy
and living support a quality of
life . . . for life.
I attended disabled swimming
lessons for numerous years andachieved my 2 miles swimming
target. Unfortunately lessons are
no longer available at my local
pool. Swimming is a fabulous
way of getting fit and having fun
and should be easily accessible
to ALL. Thank you for you
support, Dylan and Team.
We are extremely proud of
Dylan, and being post-Olympics
and Paralympics, Dylans work isabout making sure the legacy
continues into the future.
Dylans swim-a-thon went very
well. He raised a total of
2,650.62 with a huge 480
coming from students at The
MFG.
Well done to Dylan, and
everybody who supported him inthis terrific and worthwhile
venture.

Royal Armouries provide backdrop fordesign
A group of Year 12 Fashion students visited the Royal
Armouries in Leeds as part of their course.
They spent a number of hours taking part in observational
drawings which they can used in their work back at The
MFG. In particular, they created drawings which will be
used to inspire Surface Decorations and Repeat Patterns.
Experience is theteacher of all thingsShakespeares JuliusCaesar
A group of students certainly
gained an experience of
Shakespeare by visiting
Bradford Alhambra earlier this
term.
The students from Years 9 and
11 all of whom are studying
Shakespeare at the moment. In
addition and Year 12 English
Literature students joined them.
The objective of the visit was to
broaden their cultural knowledge
and awareness. It was a unique
opportunity to see the Royal
Shakespeare Company in Bradford. This visit came hot on the heels of the huge success of theMacbeth trip earlier in September.
The students really enjoyed the play, it retained the use of Shakespeares language but was set in
contemporary Africa, which was really interesting. The Year 9 students (some of whom are currently
studying Julius Caesar) felt that it enabled them to understand Shakespeares language and use of
dramatic technique more fully.
It was the opening night of the production and the Mayor welcomed some special guests, but he also
took time to speak to our students before the performance about the theatre, the play, Shakespeare
and The MFG.
