The mice and the cat

Una gran familia de ratones viva en unagran mansin. La vida fue siempre

buena con ellos ya que siempre habacomida en abundancia, sobre todo en lacocina.

There lived several families ofmice in a big mansion. Life was

good for them as there wasalways an abundance of food,especially in the kitchen.

Pero un da, el dueo de la casa trajo ungato. Desde entonces la vida de losratones fue miserable.

But one day, the master of themansion brought home a cat.Since then, life becamemiserable for the mice.

El gato merodeaba da y noche. Losratones no osaban salir de susmadrigueras porque el gato estabasiempre al acecho.

Day or night, the cat wouldprowl the mansion. The micedared not come out of theirdens because the cat wasalways lurking around.

Con el paso de los das los ratonesestaban ms y ms dbiles porque nose aventuraban a salir de susmadrigueras para buscar comida.

As the days passed, the micebecame weaker and weakerbecause they could not ventureout of their dens to find food.

Finalmente, un viejo ratn dijo: Nopodemos continuar as o moriremos dehambre y de sed muy pronto. Tenemosque encontrar un modo de ocuparnosdel gato.

Finally, an old mouse said, "Wecannot go on like this, or we willall die of hunger and thirst verysoon. We have to find a way todeal with the cat."

Efectivamente, tenemos que idear unplan dijo otro ratn. Reunmonostodos los ratones esta noche y veamos

si podemos pensar en algo.

"Indeed, we have to come upwith a plan," agreed anothermouse. "Lets get all the mice

together tonight and see if wecan think of something."

Enseguida anocheci. Todos los ratonesse haban juntado en el lugaracostumbrado de reunin en la casa.

Soon, it was nightfall. All themice had gathered at their usualmeeting place in the mansion.

The eldest mouse cleared histhroat and said, "Im sure all ofus have not been very happy oflate because of our common

enemy, the cat."

Todos los ratones asintieron con lacabeza.

All the mice nodded their headsand muttered their agreement.

El anciano ratn continu: Tenemosque actuar juntos y pensar en un planpara deshacernos del gato sino un davamos a acabar siendo su comida

The eldest mouse continued,"We must therefore act togethernow and come up with a plan todeal with the cat. Or we will allend up as the cats meal one

day"

Unos de los ratones sugiri matar algato y a todos los dems le pareci unabuena idea.

One of the mice suggestedkilling the cat, and every mouseagreed it was a good idea.

De modo que los ratones empezaron aidear la mejor manera para matar algato. Pero tan pronto como uno

propona un plan los dems lorechazaban porque era inviable.

So, the mice began discussingvarious plans about how to killthe cat. But as soon as

someone proposed a new plan,others would reject it asunworkable.

Por fin, un joven ratn dijo: Es posibleque no podamos matar al gato peroquizs podamos pensar en algo parasaber su paradero. De esa forma,cuando sepamos que viene tendremostiempo para salir corriendo

Finally, a young mouse said,"We may not be able to kill thecat, but perhaps we can think ofa way to know its whereabouts.That way, if we know it iscoming, we will have time to

run"

Los otros ratones aplaudieron lapropuesta.

The other mice cheered at thesuggestion.

El joven ratn continu: Tengo un plan. The young mouse continued, "I

Es realmente simple. Todo lo quetenemos que hacer es colgar uncascabel alrededor del cuello del gato.Por donde vaya sonar.

have a plan. Its very simple,really. All we need to do is tohang a bell around the catsneck. Wherever it goes, the bell

will ring.

Si el cascabel es grande podremosincluso escuchar cuando el gato estviniendo antes de que est demasiadocerca.

If the bell is really big, we caneven hear when the cat iscoming before it is even close!"

Todos los ratones saltaron de alborozo yaplaudieron la idea.

All the mice jumped andclapped at the idea.

De repente, un ratn sabio dijo: Esa esuna idea brillante. Ahora.. Quinpondr el cascabel al gato?

Suddenly, a wise old mousesaid, "That is a very brilliantidea. Now, who will hang thebell around the cats neck?"

Moraleja: Una cosa es decir lo quedebera hacerse y otra bien diferentehacerlo.

Moral: It is one thing to say thatsomething should be done, butquite another to do it.
