The Middle Ages in Europe
Where are we?• The Eastern half of the Empire becomes
the Byzantine Empire (capital city of Constantinople)
• The Western Half of the Empire is where we see the development of the Medieval era. (p. 265)
After the fall of Rome• Roman leaders were
removed from power• Most parts of the fallen
empire were by Germanic tribes who formed kingdoms (see p. 267)
• Most important kingdoms were the Franks, Ostrogoths and Visigoths, Lombards, and Saxons
• After the Romans left, there were no laws. No laws = no protection.
• Kings gave lands to warriors in exchange for loyalty and protection = the beginnings of FEUDALISM
• This FEUDAL system created order and gave people in society very specific roles and duties.
Roman laws and
social structure,
Military protection
and peace
Exchange of land and work for loyalty and protection = Feudalism
During Roman Empire (up to 476 CE)
