The Minerals Report Volume 2 February 2015 Expanding Education in the North Congratulations to the graduates of the Radiation Technician (9), Underground Miners (7) and Diamond Driller (8) courses at Northlands College in La Ronge! These graduates are from the first three courses developed by the Northlands College Mine School. The Mine School will ensure training relevance to industry requirements through increased interaction between the school and northern mining and exploration companies, as well as the contractors that serve the industry. Learning resources relevant to Northern Saskatchewan geology, ground conditions, and most importantly, human resources will be developed to engage and enhance the Northern workforce’s skills and availability. The Mine School will connect to industry relevant research projects with the goal of increasing the potential for economic and social benet to the businesses, communities, and residents of northern Saskatchewan. The Mine School is developing Digital Learning Resources for the Mine Engineering Technical program. The videos will be based on the mining geology and ground conditions specific to northern Saskatchewan. Topics are Geology, the geology of northern Saskatchewan; and Ground Control, the technology of working with the rock in underground mining to ensure safety and mining efficiency. Essential Skills to Mining On November 24, 20 students began the Introduction to Mining program being offered by Parkland College in collaboration with Carlton Trail College in Fort Qu’Appelle. To date they have completed their Essential Skills and safety training. The students began their BEAHR Environmental Monitoring program in January. This includes mapping, GIS and working outdoors with an emphasis on building environmental capacity in the community through a series of short-term, culturally relevant, environmental training to integrate Aboriginal culture and local knowledge into practical field experience. The program rounds out with a 12-week course in Mining Essentials where students will learn mining skills using industry examples, tools, documents and situations and traditional Aboriginal teaching methods and mediums. This 26-week course is set to wrap up on May 29. The Introduction to Mining program will prepare candidates for employment in the mining industry. Designed to offer classroom activities, on site visits and work experiences, the program will focus on work readiness, technical skills, health and safety, environmental training, and a special emphasis placed on building environmental capacity and learning mining skills using industry examples, tools, documents and situations and traditional Aboriginal teaching methods. International Minerals Innovation Institute, a unique industry–government–post-secondary education and research institutions partnership jointly funded by industry and government, is a catalyst to developing industry-driven education and training programs to address labour force needs in the sector and conducts industry-driven research and development to address workplace health and safety, environmental sustainability, social license, policy research, exploration, mining, processing and economics of commodities to ensure the continued growth of the industry. IMII’s current activities and future plans are being driven by industry priorities. Through the Board of Directors and separate panels for both Education and Training (E&T Panel) and Research and Development (R&D Panel), collaboration occurs amongst industry, government and education and research institutions to clearly define the need, solution, implementation plan and outcomes together. We wish all the students great success!
