More than 350 hockey play-ers, figure skaters, curlers, refs, coaches, fans and parents gath-ered on the bare floor of Me-morial Arena Monday evening in hopes of winning Dawson Creek some much-needed help in fixing its aging ice infrastruc-

ture.Users of Memorial Arena,

which closed last year along with the curling club due to a broken ice chiller, turned out in strength to appear in a video to accompany Dawson Creek’s nomination for Kraft Hock-eyville.

The contest challenges Ca-nadian cities and towns to show their love of hockey through videos and online votes. The town with the most votes wins a grand prize of $100,000 towards arena up-grades and an NHL preseason game.

Jenn Harcourt, a figure skat-ing coach, organized the rally on short notice. The video will be online sometime before Sunday’s deadline, she said.

“I met with a few of the coaches and put the event on Facebook and sent the email out to all the teams and that’s how we got people to come,” she said.

In all, 367 people turned out. Harcourt said she was “devastated” when the ice sea-son abruptly ended last year.

“My father played hockey here, and my brother. My nephew now plays hockey,” she said. “[The closure] was

really devastating. We had so many cutbacks to ice time.”

Both Tryna Gower and Hank Bridgeman donated their pho-tography and videography skills to the project.

While winning the contest would help, the $100,000 prize would only cover a fraction of the

expected costs to fix Memo-rial Arena.

Last month, council ap-proved around $300,000 towards investigating the problems with the arena, per-forming short term repairs, and studying the needs of ice users.

The city estimates refurbish-ing both the arena and the curl-ing rink would be in the neigh-bourhood of $3 million.

However, Harcourt said the contest would be a much-needed morale boost for Daw-son Creek ice users.

“Everybody’s been so upset that we lost the ice in this facil-ity so I think [the contest] will really bring the town around make people a little happier.”

Nominations for Hockeyville close Feb. 8. The top ten towns will be whittled down between March 21 and 23. The winner will be announced April 4.

Airman, adventurer, nonagenarianSam Side can’t stop apologizing

while we speak on the phone.Every question brings up a memory,

which leads to another, and he keeps wandering through a history that, if anything, seems larger than his 92 years on Earth. Even though I meet each of his apologies with an equal apology, and tell him I really don’t mind, he always sounds like he’s searching for that one thing that would make his stories even more exciting.

He also says he doesn’t hear so well nowadays, but every question brings an instant answer, whether from his childhood in the Prairies, his 41 missions as an airman in the Second World War, or the 45 years he spent living, raising a family and working in Dawson Creek.

Talking about his early life growing up in Saskatchewan, Side says his family was always working in some business or another. His family started a butcher shop there that was successful enough to become a general store.

“Dad came (to Canada) at the turn of the century,” he says. “There was nothing for him in the old country ... there were many opportunities for him (in Canada).”

Side’s parents, Alex and Latifa, were non-practicing Muslims from what would today be Lebanon, but was then Ottoman Syria. After making his way to Mexico, then the U.S. and finally Canada, Alex applied to be a homesteader and went to Saskatchewan.

Side was born on the homestead, near Abbey, but his family gave up the farm when he was a boy, eventually settling in the town of Dilke.

Side says although life as settlers on the prairie was hard work and had some adversity, life was simple and all about family and neighbours. Side said his mind was always curious and he was fortunate to have a Grade 12 education.

In a book recently published about Side’s life, which is available at Bill’s News in Dawson Creek, his daughter Dianne Longson writes that Alex Side,

perhaps tired of Sam’s fancy-free teenage years, handed his 19-year-old son $10 and sent him off into the world.

It was 1941, near the beginning of the Second World War. Like many young men his age, the war grew Side up quickly. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, eventually becoming a Flight Sergeant.

Side would later write that his “crew of six hand-picked young men” spent 240 hours over 41 missions bombing the enemy, adding that he always brought the team home safely.

“It was an adventure,” he says of becoming a bomber pilot. “But there was quite a lot of loss. It was not a nice thing to have to do.”

With the war over, Side rejoined his family, which moved to Edmonton – where there was a sizable Lebanese community – in 1946. He worked at his parents’ restaurant there, and tried to enrol at the University of Alberta, but a records snafu meant he was blocked from attending, something he now calls a blessing in disguise.

Side laughs about being invited to Dawson Creek for a short two-day visit after the war. A trained pilot, he had gotten a civilian licence but couldn’t find much work flying in Edmonton.

Dawson Creek was a different story: his friend Bill Whiteley operated a flight school and charter airline mostly serving the oil companies that were already beginning to set up shop. The Alaska Highway was still under military control in the beginning, and Dawson Creek was an important refuelling stop for American planes headed north.

“The war ended, the US Army was moving out and the transportation to go up the highway came to Dawson Creek by rail,” he said of his early days in Dawson Creek. “They couldn’t get across the river at that time, and then later the bridge collapsed.”

He flew for close to three years for Inter-Provincial Airways before heading into a variety of different “adventures,” as he calls them.

“I was still unsettled when I went (to Edmonton) after the war and to a point that I just had to do something,” he says of his move to Dawson Creek. “He invited me up for two days and I ended Cont. Page 6

Cont. from Pg 5up staying all those years.”When Whiteley left to train pilots for the RCAF,

Side’s flying career came to an end, he says: “I was flying as a partner for him, but I didn’t have the capital to continue, so we discontinued the services at that time.”

Side tries to describe how Dawson Creek was really booming after the war – he talks of watching the city grow with trucking and agriculture and oil patch

exploration. It was in the bustling village that he met his wife Anna, whose family had emigrated from Ukraine to near Spirit River, and who was working as a waitress in a downtown hotel.

They married in 1949, and according to Longson’s book, their first married lodgings were a $30 a month duplex – furnished, but without running water and only a wood stove used for both cooking and heat.

After his commercial flying days ended, Side joined a number of companies in various

bookkeeping positions. He bought a few quarters of land, some by trade, some by loan and some with savings. Wanting to be his own boss, he worked the land and at the same time hung out his shingle as a business consultant.

He recalls how when Dawson Creek was about to grow from a village into a city, he was tapped to set up its accounting system. A couple of years after that, the city’s only notary died, and Side took a correspon Cont. Pg 10

House and Home

When you’re looking at the big job of building a new home, your budget is the first consideration, of course. How much capital you have and how much financing you can access determine whether you hire a contractor or do some or all of the work yourself.

You’ll deal with a general contrac-tor. A contractor is responsible for all aspects of the building of your home, according to the design and plan you ask him or her to use. The contractor, or builder, should be licensed and reputable, as you’ll be expecting him to build accord-ing to code. Make sure your chosen contractor has a good knowledge of building standards in your area and good references from other clients.

You’ll do it all yourself. If you decide to be your own contractor, you should first contact the associa-tion that governs your local building code. You may be required to obtain a licence or hire licensed subcon-tractors for certain jobs. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet all building standards if you hire relatives or friends to help you.

MORE OPTIONSHowever you go about having your

home built, there are some consid-erations to take care of before you proceed.

• Find land. Your first stepshould be to find some land in your area of choice. Before buying a lot, check with the municipality to ensure your project complies with all standards and codes. Otherwise, you might end up with a lot where you can’t build a new residential home.

• Choose your plans. There are several options: you can shop around for ready-made floor plans; choose one from those offered by the contractor you hire; or work with an architect to design your own home.

• Chooseaprefabhome. If you choose this route, you’ll have plenty of options. Prefabricated homes are available in modules or panels and are assembled with the help of the manufacturer and a specialized con-tractor.

• Choose a housing develop-ment. Your job may be easier if you decide to go with a housing developer that offers pre-prepared lots and a repertory of floor plans. However, be sure to check the background of the contractor in charge of this development and take the time to study the plans and terms before signing the pre-liminary contract.

Local SportsJr. futsal drawing big turnout

Byron Hackett/ Staff writer Upon first glance, it looked the players

from the South Peace Junior Soccer (SPJS) indoor league were kicking around semi-deflated soccer balls at the Northern Lights College gymnasium.

That turned out to be wrong, in fact the smaller ball is a big part of futsal soc-cer, a game which is played indoors on a much smaller surface than outdoors, with a smaller soccer ball that doesn’t bounce as much as an outdoor ball.

Sunday afternoon was week four of 10 for the SPJS futsal program, one designed to encourage skills development for soccer players from as young as five to as old as 15.

President of SPJS Alan Duncan said the 84 kids that turn up throughout the course of four 45-minute sessions, was a pleasant surprise when the board decided to put together a winter program on short notice late in 2014.

“We used to have an indoor program, that was 5-7 years ago. So what we wanted to do is bring it back— but bring it back as futsal and we did that,” Duncan said.

“This is our first year, because of timing we could only run a half season. We are only going January to March. Hopefully next year

we will do a longer season…in two months we were able to slam together a program, we had no idea what kind of numbers we would get. We were hoping for 60 and we got 84. We’re over the moon.”

The benefit of an indoor program like the one they are running is the emphasis on skill development, an important em-phasis that can sometimes get lost during the course of an outdoor season with more focus on game play.

“In futsal we work on more of skill devel-opment than throwing the kids into games. We do a lot more training, a lot more drib-bling, passing, that sort of stuff– fundamen-tals. The kids love it because they always have the ball at their feet,” Duncan said.

Over the course of the ten-week pro-gram, Duncan hopes to see that the kids have not only had fun, but also progressed and improved their skill level from the first day they arrive at the gym.

“In soccer there are only a few funda-

mental skills, it’s the control it’s the drib-bling, the passing and the shooting,” he said. “In this environment we really

want to work on the passing and get-ting into space. We are hoping to build on that through progression and by the end instead of the kids running around franti-

cally— it should be some what of an orga-nized game.”

The kids may still be working on their or-ganization, but the smiling faces at the end of the day were clear indication indoor ju-nior soccer has found a home in the South Peace.

Seven-year-old Drayke Coutts of Dawson Creek controls the ball during a scrimmage at the Under 8 age group session of SPJS futsal on Sunday.

Cont. from Pg 6dence course to take his place, becoming certified in 1962.Side says there isn’t a thing he would change about his path as a businessman,

as there was a wealth of opportunities to take advantage of in Dawson Creek. “It was for me especially,” he said.

For decades after that, Side had a hand in many projects around town, from his headquarters on 103 Avenue. He says the Selwyn Place apartments, the city’s bus depot, and the industrial park are all developments he played a key role in. He also helped the Dawson Creek and District Hospital grow into the modern facility it is today, and – of course – helped train Air Cadets.

He and Anna retired to Sidney, near Victoria, in 2006, where they live today.Side laughs about what he considered one of his few missteps in Dawson

Creek: his year-long stint in city politics as an alderman (the old term for councillor). He says that after his time as a notary and businessman, he wasn’t cut out to be a politician.

“Politics is a funny thing,” he said.Side said he isn’t too sure what the future holds for Dawson Creek, he laughs

about being his age and thinking ahead. “You try not to,” he said.He says oil and gas development is one way the city will always on the road to

progress, and added that even though agriculture has changed to become larger farms with fewer people, it will always be a big part of the region. He also said transportation and green power will continue to be important sources of growth.

“I sure don’t know ... the oil patch probably will always keep involved,” he says. “That’s my version of it.”

Side asks to offer his advice to today’s youth based on his life experiences. He says you need to keep your eyes open for opportunities, as there is always lots to do. He says learn everything you can, so you can take advantage of what comes along the way.

“To be as versatile ... to be able to do a lot of things. Don’t take one thing and stick with it,” he said. “That’s not exciting at all.”

As we get older, we learn to take the necessary steps to prolong the aging process. This may mean adopting a new

fitness schedule, a new dietary routine, or just some time to relax and get away from everyday stress. We are not the only ones that need this extra care as we age. Your pet also needs to maintain a regular exercise routine, a healthy diet, and routine check-ups with their doctor.

Lifestyle

Do gleaming expanses of virgin snow leave you cold? Does just the thought of winter give you the shivers? Here are fi ve benefi ts of cold weather that will make you rethink your position.

1. A GREAT ALLY FOR LOSING WEIGHT That’s right. Below zero temperatures can help you lose

weight. During cold weather, you burn more calories in order to maintain your core body temperature. The body does that by drawing on its fat reserves. So why wait to turn down your thermostat?

2. SAY GOODBYE TO GERMS People don’t catch colds because it’s cold. In fact, when

temperatures drop, some germs are much less active, including the ones that cause the common cold. Colds are more prevalent in winter because we spend more time indoors, crowded together, which facilitates the spread of viruses.

3. IT’S GOOD FOR MORALE Scientifi c studies have shown that cold reduces stress and

negative thoughts. Cold temperatures cause the re lease of endorphins — the so-called happy hormones — that give your mood a boost. For some people the reduced hours of sunlight can cause depression, but a full-spectrum light can help with that.

4. THE SLEEP OF THE JUST Do you miss sleeping like a log? It may be that you’re

too hot at night, under all those covers. The ideal tem-perature for sleeping is around 18°C, so if you turn down the temperature in your bedroom, you’ll sleep better.

5. BETTER BLOOD CIRCULATION Lower temperatures are excellent for the circulatory

system. They promote microcirculation, which im proves cell and organ nourishment. Better blood fl ow also pre-vents the appearance of varicose veins and hair loss.

The next time you feel like cursing winter, think about all these good reasons to love it!

Rejoice, it’s cold outside!

Learn to love the cold; it has many

health benefi ts.
