The Mission of Bethesda United Methodist Church

By God’s grace, to make disciples of Jesus Christ

through a loving community of faith and service.

Love. Love. Listen. Serve.

9:00am Connection Service is an informal service which includes a Bible-based message. The casual atmosphere and contemporary praise and worship music will broaden your definition of worship. 10:00am Sunday School classes are available for all ages. Deepen your relationship with Christ & influence in the world by knowing Scripture and giving it authority in your life. 11:00am Traditional Service includes choir anthems, hymns, and a traditional sermon. Livestream Services are available through Facebook for the 11am service. The fall is my favorite time of the year with the cooler days (especially if the summer was super hot!), the changing of

the leaves, and football. These past few weeks have let me know that fall is here. A new way to know that fall has

arrived here at BUMC is the arrival of the pumpkins for our new Pumpkin Patch! I love how a Pumpkin Patch can unite

the people of a church, as we come together working side-by-side to make this a successful event, with our ultimate goal to raise money

for missions. It is also a great way for us to connect to our community and get to know our neighbors.

It takes many people to make a Pumpkin Patch come alive during the month of October, and we will need you to be a part of this fun

event. Our truck will arrive on October 9th around 1pm, and many volunteers will be needed to help unload our pumpkins and set up the

patch. Starting October 10th, we will have daily operating hours, and volunteers are needed to staff the patch. This might seem like a big

commitment, but it is well worth the time and energy required, as we build relationships with one another and with the greater

Powdersville community. If you have not already signed up to work in the Pumpkin Patch, contact Erin Hiller, and she will find a place

for you. Maybe you’ll even get to feel like Linus, sitting the Pumpkin Patch waiting for the “Great Pumpkin” to appear!

Besides the Pumpkin Patch, there are many other activities to participate in throughout this month, and those are listed in the newsletter.

I hope you will try to participate in these wonderful events, as they help to connect our church members with members of the community

and support the different ministries of the church. Farm Days (October 10th) and the Fall Festival (October 20th) are two of our special

events this month that you won’t want to miss! These will be great opportunities to be with our church family and our community.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Together in Christ,

Judson

Bethesda UMC Pumpkin Patch- Bethesda is excited to partner with Pumpkin Patch USA to host our own pumpkin patch. This will be a great opportunity to raise money for missions & show our community why Bethesda is so special! We need many volunteers! Come help us unload the pumpkins on Sat., Oct. 9th. We will begin selling pumpkins on Sun., Oct. 10th at noon. You can donate your fall outdoor decorations to help make our space festive & inviting! We are looking forward to this wonderful opportunity to raise money for missions &

connect with our community!

To volunteer during our pumpkin patch times, click here or scan the QR code.

Farm Days

Join us on Sun., Oct. 10th!

Drive your tractor to church and wear your overalls!!! Tractor Parade starts at 9am.

Bring your lawn chair and join us at 10:30am for an

outside Worship Service. (If raining, service will be in the sanctuary)

Lastly, the UMM will provide a pulled Pork BBQ (with beans and slaw) lunch.

Fall Festival

October 20th from 5:30-8:00 pm

Volunteers, Games, Trunks, and Candy are needed!

We will need volunteers to help set up on the day of the Fall Festival. We will begin set up around 11am.

Let Courtney Barnes know if you are able to take some

time on October 16th to help with event set up.

Thank you for helping us with this great outreach!

October means Fall. And Fall means cooling weather and fun outdoor activities. And boy do we have activities coming up. The church

Pumpkin Patch will be an awesome outreach chance for the church to the community. On October 9th, the pumpkins are being delivered at

1pm and it is an all hands on deck event. Any youth that can are encouraged to come and help unload the pumpkins. It will be work but it will

be fun. Also in October we have the Fall Festival at Asbury Hills on October 16th. We will leave at 9:30am and will be back in the afternoon

around 3pm. They will be serving BBQ for lunch. Its really an awesome time with the leaves changing and the smell of apple cider in the air

(which they make on site during the day). There is no cost to go. Then, the next week on Wednesday, October 20th we have the Fall Festival

here at Bethesda! That will be a super fun time. Any youth who can drive are encouraged to do a trunk for the trunk of treat or help with

activities. October wouldn’t be complete with Halloween, and since it falls on Fall Break, we are having a Halloween Lock-in! Costumes are

welcome, we will have 9-square and gaga ball, along with a nerf wars battlefield setup. There will be other fun and games as well. Since it is

a lock-in, if you youth has a party or event, they are more welcome to come after that is over. Its going to be a blast. Lastly, starting in October

we are bringing back the Monday Night Bible Study on Mondays at 7pm. It will be a time that we will spend diving deeper into scripture.

We also have other fun things coming up and I look forward to having a great October!

Apple Picking 2021 at Sky Top

Well, fall is officially here, and I know cooler weather is just around the corner. Fall has always been my favorite time of year. I love all the smells, pumpkin treats, festivals, and the changes of color that abound all around. A couple of years ago, I wrote about a meme I had read

that said “The trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let things go.” I think these words are even more true today. A lot has changed in the last 18 months, and are not quite back to what we considered normal. But one thing has not changed, God is in control. He has been this

entire time. He tells us over and over in the Bible that He is with us, He will never leave us, and to trust in Him alone, and He will take our burdens, even those we don’t think He needs to be bothered with. It is so comforting to have that assurance, that He takes it all, every bit of it.

Happy Fall! God loves you! Acolytes: Being an acolyte in the 11 o’clock traditional service is the first opportunity our young ones (grades 2-6) have to serve during worship! If you have a child, or you know a child, who deserves this special honor, please contact Linda Thompson ([email protected]) or Courtney Barnes ([email protected]) for more information about schedules and training. Thank you to all those who helped light our services during the month of September.

Sunday School at Bethesda Sunday School is great time for sharing and learning for all age groups! We have classes open every Sunday morning from 10-11am. Classes meet in the Education Building. Adult classes meet on the top floor, while Preschool to High School meet on the bottom floor.

We are excited to offer the following classes:

Preschool / K-3rd Grade / 4th-5th Grade / Middle and High School

Fellowship Class - This class is lecture orientated and uses the Adult Bible Series curriculum with rotating teachers. This is a very loving and supportive class that also enjoys lively class discussion! Class members are mostly seniors but they heartily welcome anyone who wishes to learn with them. Irene Cely Class - This class uses the Adult Bible Series curriculum. If you are interested in a class that studies the bible, actively supports the ministries of Bethesda, reaches out to meet the needs of the community, has an active prayer ministry and enjoys fellowship with one another so much that the class president has to ring a goat bell to call the class to order, then the Irene Cely Class is the one for you! Class members range from teenagers to 90’s. New Beginnings Class - This class typically studies a devotional type curriculum with an emphasis on applying Christian principles to real world situations and is very conversational with much discussion among the members of the class. The class works to build a community within the group and is active in many organizations and committees within the church. Class members are all ages. Crosstalk Class - This class is discussion-based with focus on current issues using biblical guidance. The class is primarily taught by DeDee Clarey, one of our Lay Speakers, with the help of other class members when needed. Members range from the age of 30+ to the “Finish Line” and work together in many different activities in the church. Adventures In Faith Class - This class is a Bible-based and issues-oriented class with focused discussion and application of the Word to everyday living. Service and prayer are central to this group. Class members are at or near retirement age. New Life Christian Class - This class focuses on spiritual growth and life application of Biblical principles, with additional periods of study geared towards developing a deeper understanding of the Bible. The class strives to provide a strong foundation for an active Christian life. Class members range from 30’s to 50’s and are involved in many areas of the church.

The United Methodist Women Reading Program

50 Women Every Christian Should Know In her book 50 Women Every Christian Should Know author Michelle DeRusha presents a brief biography of 50 wom-en who have in their own way been influential in the world. From Hildegard of Bingen, born in 1098, to Ruth Bell Gra-ham wife of Billy Graham, the reader is made aware of how these women through the choices they made in their ordi-nary lives served God as they thought they were led to do. These were not super hero women. They made mistakes, questioned and doubted many times. The reader becomes keenly aware that God does not require “perfect skills or flawless character” but that He used these women and can use us “in the midst of doubt and despair” if we are willing to be used for His purposes. For information about the UMW Reading Program, contact Margaret Baker (864-230-6693) or [email protected]

Stamp Collecting for Missions The UMW are collecting cancelled postage stamps of any kind. The stamps are sold to collectors and the money is used for missions. Leave 1/4” of paper around each stamp. A collection box is in the narthex.

Pink Sunday We will be observing Pink Sunday on Oct. 17th to raise awareness of breast

cancer and to recognize all breast cancer survivors. We will be distributing information on breast cancer. We encourage everyone

to wear something pink.

Bethesda United Methodist Women would like to say a big THANK YOU to Betsy Zaglin, the coordinator of the Art Expo and Cake Auction,

for inviting us to participate in this fund (and fun) raising event.

In addition we thank everyone who donated cakes, time, talents and monetary gifts to support our ongoing mission activities.

In just two hours we added $629 to our treasury. A much needed resource that will enable us us to continue to make a difference

in the lives of countless women, children and youths locally, nationally and internationally.

Again, thank you all!

Margaret Baker, Unit Secretary of Bethesda UMW

We sincerely appreciate the opportunity to use the gym some during the summer. It never ceases to amaze me

how the community comes alongside the children of Wren and Powdersville to make sure there are safe

places for them to play and come together.

Truly a testimony that is needed and appreciated.

Thank you.
