Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members, As the fourth quarter of a busy and productive school year begins, we have much information to share. Primarily on our minds is upcoming standard- ized testing which will be conducted April 12-17 with make ups on April 18. Please note that make ups are allowed only under extreme circumstances of phy- sician-documented illness. If an eighth grade student misses testing for unex- cused reasons, the testing will need to be made up this summer and the student will not pass for the year until those summer results are returned. As you know, LEAP for eighth graders is high stakes, which means the student must meet certain state criteria in order to advance to the ninth grade. Results of seventh grade ILEAP testing are used to determine if a student is in need of an extra tutorial program offered as a pull out during the PE hour. These results are also used to determine placement in honors-level classes. Therefore, it is important for all students to take this seriously. Please assure that your child gets a good night sleep and eats a good breakfast each day. Also, don’t forget about “Monteleone Magic” on April 25 from 6-8:30 p.m. here on campus. This wonderful family event will be an outstanding junior high memory for your child and hopefully for you as well. There are so many opportunities to share the experiences that our students will be showcasing on this evening. You will not want to miss this event! There are many opportunities for parents and relatives to volunteer to be a part of this event that is so important to our students. We would like to congratulate several faculty members who have been awarded grants after much hard work. Besides our ELA department and Mrs. Bunce who were awarded PTA mini grants, Mr. Gardner, received wonderful news from Donors Choice regarding the funding of two new pro- jects for his special education students. Mrs. De Santi will be participating in a summer program on primary resources with the assistance of a $4000 grant which includes her travel and over $1200 in supplies for our students. We also welcome back Mrs. Timmins after the birth of our new baby boy and we congratulate the new Mrs. Katie Turner, nee Yarborough, on her recent marriage. As usual, please carefully peruse this issue of our PTA newsletter. There have been many recent successful activities and events, and much more to come in the next two months. As this school year nears an end, I’d like to express our sincerest pleasure in having worked with your stu- dents. It has been a great year of the most respectful, positive, hard working and enjoyable group of young teens. Thanks for all that you have done for our school! • Dear LMJH Parents, Spring has arrived and we are busily planning for our LMJH Student Showcase, Monteleone Magic. Remember to save the date, Monteleone Magic falls on Wednesday, April 25th. This is a fun-filled family event that will feature our tal-ented students here at LMJH. For those of you who have not experienced the excitement of the event, you are in for a won-derful showcase. A silent auction will also take place. We are in need of donations of various items. If anyone has an affilia-tion with any New Orleans sports teams or any hotels and restaurants, please contact us or the school office. Thanks to all of you who have been helping prepare for Monteleone Magic. It is our wonderful volunteers that really enable our school to offer this exciting event. Whether it is preparing for the event, and/or working on the day of the event, we love to have you join our team of parents and teachers. It will be an evening you will never forget. Please look for important volunteer forms, auction forms, etc., in this newsletter. Our last PTSA Board/General Meeting will be held Tuesday, May 8th at 6:30pm. A BIG "thank you" goes out to Stacey Neill and Carolyn Bertucci, PTSA Mini Grant Committee, for their hard work on selecting the teachers for our grants. Also, many thanks to Janelle Meyers, Faculty and Staff Appreciation Chair, for her efforts with the end of the nine weeks luncheon. Everyone enjoyed the lunch! Thanks to all those who donated food and prizes. Without your support the luncheon would not have been a success. We are truly blessed to have the best parents at LMJH! As always, thank you for supporting LMJH PTSA. Hope to see you all at Monteleone Magic! Sincerely, Virna Bays Co-President Kim Villars, Co-President babvlb@ charter.net kdvillars@ yahoo.com

  • Hello Parents,

Do you ever feel like you and your son or daughter speak a different language? Effective communication can be tough for most of us, especially when it comes to communicating with teenagers! Sometimes what you hear is more important than what you say.

Teens - more than anything - want to be valued, understood, and accepted. When parents take the time to listen, kids get the message that what they have to say is important. In turn, this makes them more likely to listen to your thoughts on the subject. If you have a son or daughter who is likely to stop talking . . . or doesn’t want to talk at all, try these tips and see if your relationship improves.

Pay attention - concentrate on what your child is saying

Don’t interrupt - listen to the whole message and try to think about the feelings behind the words

Reserve judgment until your child has finished and has asked you for a response (if kids

feel judged, they are likely to shut down)

Notice body language and facial expressions - sometimes it’s not the words kids use but what they are “saying” in their body language

Is he/she nervous or uncomfortable – frowning, drumming fingers, tapping a foot, looking at the clock?

Or does he/she seem relaxed – smiling, looking you in the eyes?

Check your understanding -acknowledge what your child is saying and repeat things for confirmation (kids are more open to advice if they feel understood)

  • On April 21st, St. Tammany residents will have the opportunity to continue Propositions 1, 2 and 3, ex-isting property tax millages, which provide local support to public schools in St. Tammany Parish. These re-newals are not new taxes and will not increase your current tax rates. Propositions 1, 2 and 3 represent 20% of the operating budget for the St. Tammany Parish Public School System and are essential for maintaining our current services to students, parents, and community members. The funds from Propositions 1, 2 and 3 pay for instructional materials, curriculum and instruction programs, repairs to schools, music, art and P.E. programs and salaries and benefits. Funding from these millages im-pacts every student in all of our schools. In St. Tammany Parish Public Schools we pride ourselves on educating every child, every day. Our School System continues to grow and our enrollment this year is 37,508 students. We oversee 55 schools and serve almost 10,000 Special Education students. We have the number one ACT average composite score in the state and our ACT scores are above the state and national averages. Our District Performance Score of 111.3 places us fourth in the state but first in districts with more than 20,000 students. All of our schools and our School System have earned the prestigious AdvancED Accreditation. The funding from Propositions 1, 2 and 3 provides the local funding that allows us to provide the services and programs required to maintain our high quality School System and to remain a leader in education. We urge you to find out more about our School System by visiting our website at www.stpsb.org, by liking us on Face-book or by following us on Twitter. These propositions are critical to our School System and your vote is important on this issue. We urge you to vote on April 21st. Thank you for your continued support. Superintendent W.L. “Trey” Folse, III St. Tammany Parish Public Schools

Dear Enviro-Friend, As you know, Monteleone Junior High raises funds by recycling inkjet cartridges, cell phones and other small electronics with Planet Green. Please watch this video and help our organization reach its fundraising goals by recycling. Most of us have these recyclable items sitting around our homes collecting dust and now you can recycle them and help us raise money at the same time. Did you know? Over 2.5 million tons of e-waste ends up in landfills every year! Please watch the video now: https://planetgreenrecycle.com/monteleonejh?ap=true Once you have watched the video, go to our website to get started. https://planetgreenrecycle.com/monteleonejh Only by working together can we make a difference! Start forwarding this e-mail to all of your family, friends and neighbors today. You can send or drop items off at the school library to be recycled.

  • The LMJH Mini-Grants Committee received several grant submissions for the 2011-2012 academic year. As background, the LMJH PTSA offers small grants to aid special programs proposed by teachers, staff, and students. The Mini-Grant program was initiated to serve as many Monteleone Junior High School students as possible. Through thorough review, the committee selected two outstanding submissions and awarded the following:

"40 Book Challenge" submitted by Mrs. Patricia DeSanti. This grant was jointly contributed and submitted by Ms. Melissa Bier, Ms. Kendra Thompson, Ms. Paige Gunter, Ms. Lisa Reis, Ms. Gail Blalock, Mr. Craig Camus, Ms. Rachel Kelley, and Ms. Mary Kay Walden. The group was awarded $800 from the LMJH PTA mini grants committee.

The second winning grant was "Tapping Back in Time Through iPod Touches" by Mrs. Rebecca Bunce. She was awarded $200 from the LMJH PTA mini grants committee. On Tuesday, January 10th, Stacey Neill and Carolyn Bertucci, as members of the mini grant committee, along with Mrs. Addison, presented the award certificates to the teachers. Mrs. Addison also added a HUGE benefit to the grant winners by informing each of them that their grants would be doubled by her. Everyone was thrilled with the extra funding! Thank you Mrs. Addison. The PTA mini grants committee wishes to thank all of the teachers, administration, and staff members for submit-ting their grant requests. We also wish to congratulate the winners again. We are extremely fortunate at LMJH to be able to fund the grants because our children are the winners and will benefit from this funding.

We would like to thank our school community for participating in the World’s Finest Chocolate Fundraiser! The school was able to benefit from a profit of $8500 toward technology. Our top seller, who was Principal of the day was once again, Amanda Brenner. Assistant Principal of the Day and second place seller was Mathew Caluda. Winner of the drawing for the 5 lb World’s Finest Chocolate Bar was David Meiners, two $25 I-tune cards were awarded to Mathew Caluda and Skyler Rogowski, and a 19” flat screen television was won by Shannon Roussell. Special congratulations to Mrs. Scioneaux’s Class who enjoyed an hour in the Video Game Theatre on Wheels for being the top selling class. Purchases to be made include new projectors and mini laptops for the classrooms as well as other new technological opportunities.
