FROM YOUR CHAIRMAN

I t is not long now till the AGM and we hope to see lots of you there. It always motivates the trustees and subcommit-tee members to see a good turn out, so let me thank you all in anticipation of a record one this year. I must apolo-

gise for holding it in one of our colder months, but a wise man once said, “There is no such thing as bad weather, just differ-ent kinds of good weather”. Clearly that wise man had never lived through a drought.

AGM’s are a nice way to mark the end of a year for Thornhill, a time to reflect on things we have achieved and shake our heads at problems that persist or linger like a bad smell. The achievements are not always so obvious but this year will be different. The roof will be up and should be finished by the time we get to the AGM. I think the first time we brought it up would be around 2002 so this has been an idea 15 years in the making; you can raise a family in that time so it is nice to move it from the shaking of the head side of the bal-ance sheet to the achievement side. Well done to all concerned. I for one will be very excited to see it finished and hope it meets with all of our expectations. Once up we will start looking at access control improvements which will include testing a new system whereby residents can give a PIN to their visitors to get them through quicker. The flip side of that is better control of the gate. This is a delicate balance between improved security and not breaking the law in terms of access. Our Safety & Security Committee are working on the best way forward in future, an ever changing landscape I am afraid where we have to stay on our toes all the time.

I am sure that barking dogs will come up again at the AGM. This is something the board has tried to resolve to the best of their abilities. Some areas seem to have more problems than others, but regardless of where you live in the estate, there seems to be an element of over eager dogs from time to time. Brussels has a few residents that believe the dogs in that area are well out of control but our monitoring of the situation cannot find the same issue.

Having said that, I was recently visiting a friend in their kitchen at around 8pm, and there was one dog in particular next door that did not stop barking for over 40 minutes. It was difficult to hold a conversation as it was right on the other side of the wall just metres away and would not stop. I made the mistake of putting my head over the wall to calm the dog only to discover there was an-other one that was a tad calmer until I did that. That ended the visit as chatting then become impossible. My friend did say it was a rare thing and the owner was

on his way home but it did illustrate to me the problems some face with stressed dogs living next door. My own dogs tend to bark at passing guards, walkers or oth-er dogs and if I am not home I am sure they could carry on for quite a while. The answer? Exercise your dogs as often as you can and socialise them too. It’s easy to say this but the reality is that most of us hit the traffic by 7am and are not home till after 6pm, so there is not much time for our pets at all. Having said that, if we do own dogs we owe it to the dogs and our neighbours to walk them regularly; please try harder dog owners, pretty please and thank you.

One area that we have seen vast improvements on is the control of contractors over the weekend. On the whole we find less residents pushing the limits on that one. For the record, we do not allow contractors to work from 1pm on Saturday until Monday morning, giving us all peace and quiet for the bulk of the weekend. This is enforced by our security doing the rounds of the estate from 12:45pm till 1:15pm to ensure that everyone has stopped and left by 1pm. The idea behind this is to ensure that our residents can enjoy the weekend with their families, making a different kind of noise, screaming kids, a bit of music here and there and, from about 4pm onwards, the odd barking dog as people walk them around the estate. I didn’t say it was perfect!

I am going to be interested in what topics come up at the AGM this year. The

estate is looking great but we need to address the water course. Security has been first class but we do have a lot of construction work about to go into overdrive around the shops. Our admin is getting better and better but... there is just so much to do still. Always a challenge that is for sure. Join us at the AGM please, it will be great to see you there.

All the best for now, stay safe.

THORNHILL EVENTS

On Saturday 20th of May we took the opportunity to thank our Mothers for all they do by hosting a Mother’s Day Event at the Clubhouse.

Moms were welcomed with a glass of bubbly and everyone enjoyed the eats and drinks that were on offer. Many of the moms opted for a relaxing shoulder massage while the kids had either a massage or had their nails painted. The kiddies also enjoyed icing and decorating cupcakes… and eating them after!

It was a lovely relaxed afternoon enjoyed by all.

Many thanks to Michele and Carla from Seeff for sponsoring the JC Le Roux that helped us spoil the moms. Thanks to Letabo Spa for the relaxing pampering. Further thanks goes to Lewana and Bernadette from the social committee for assisting with the organisation of the event.

Thankful for our Mothers

THORNHILL LIFE

Thornhill Estate resident, author Diane Fisher, shares an extract from her new book entitled “Dear David”.

“When I was not quite 60 years old I decided to jump off the ever increas-ing speed of the conveyor belt of life and take early retirement. One day, while passing my groceries through the check out of our local supermarket = listening to that annoying ‘ping’ as each article gets scanned reminding you that you have, once again, overspent, the bored young sales assistant asked “would you like the pensioner’s discount?” Shock and horror! Did I really look like an old lady already?

I was given the princely sum of R40 off my purchases which I quickly took back into the shop and bought a long lasting, guaranteed 100 percent grey coverage, hair colour.

If you are lucky enough to have time on your hands when retirement kicks in, a visit to the local Courthouse can be much more entertaining than Days of our Lives. Once I overheard a case of a lady who had been arrested for assaulting a mammogram tech-nician. I thought that’s a strange charge and took a seat in the courtroom to hear more. A middle aged, well-groomed lady took the box. She didn’t look like the kind of person who would assault anyone. Her brown hair was short and neat, her make-up impecca-bly applied and she wore a very smart pink trouser suit. Once the charges were read out to her she replied’

“Your Honour, I am guilty,” she admitted, “But there were extenuating circum-stances.” Sarcastically the judge said, “I would certainly like to hear those exten-uating circumstances.” So did I, so I listened carefully as the lady told her story. “Your Honour. I had a mammogram appointment which I actually kept. I was met by this perky little clipboard carrier smiling from ear to ear as she tilted her head to one side and crooned, “Hi! I’m Belinda! All I need you to do is step into this room right here, strip to the waist and then slip on this gown. Everything clear so far?” I’m thinking, “Belinda, try decaf. This isn’t rocket science,” Belin-da then skipped away to prepare the ‘chamber of horrors’. With the right side finished, Belinda (literally) flipped me over to the left side and said, “Hmmm. Can you stand on your tippy toes and lean in just a tad so we can get everything in?”

“Fine,” I answered. I was freezing cold, bruised and out of air so I thought, why not use the remaining circulation in my legs and neck to finish me off? ”My body was in a holding pattern that defied gravity with my other breast wedged be-tween those two four inch pieces of square glass, when I heard and felt a sharp

THORNHILL LIFEzap! Complete darkness, the power was off!

Belinda said, “Uh oh, maintenance is working on something, bet they hit a snag.” Then she headed for the door. “Excuse me!” I shouted. “You’re not leaving me in the vice alone are you?” Belinda threw a smile over her shoulder as she kept walking towards the door saying, “Oh you scaredey cat, the door’s wide open so you’ll have the emergency hall lights and I’ll be right back.”

Before I could shout “Noooo” she had disappeared and that is exactly how Moo-sa and Earl, ‘maintenance men extraordinaire’ found me. Standing on my ‘tippy’ toes, half naked with part of me dangling from the ‘jaws of life’ and another part smashed between two sheets of glass! After exchanging a polite. ‘Hi how’s it going’ type of greeting, Moosa (or possibly Earl) asked, to my utter disbelief, if I knew the power was off. Trying to disguise my hysteria, I replied with as much calmness as possible, “Uh, yes, I did, but thanks anyway”

“Ok, you take care now,” Earl replied and waved goodbye as though I’d been standing in line at the supermarket. A long time later (it felt like two hours at least), Belinda breezes in wearing a sheepish grin making no attempt to suppress her amusement saying, “Oh I am sooo sorry. The power came back on and I totally forgot about you! Silly me, I went to lunch. Are we upset?” and that, Your Honour, is exactly how her head ended up between the clamps...” The judge could hardly contain her laughter as she said, “Case dismissed.”

THORNHILL LIFESpeed kills!

I was quite distressed when driving back into Thornhill at around 8:15am on March 16, to see dead in the middle of Bruges Road, one of the Crowned Lapwing birds (Crowned Plover or Kiewitjie). Its mate was sitting on the grass just looking, about 6 metres away. This happened between 6:45am

and 8:15 am in broad day-light. I would take a stab that it was somebody once again driving far too fast along Bruges Road. It is a road where residents know that many of the birds which we have left in Thornhill, have made their home. This particular pair have lived on that corner for many years, and every year give us the pleasure of producing two little ‘fluff ball babies’, which run along on the grass in the same locale every year. This bird species are monogamous and we will never see those precious little creatures breed there again.

Yet another senseless and painful destruction of our precious wildlife (see THOA magazine for March, where a carefully reared and released owl was killed in Provan Road.) I believe that we should put up SPEED KILLS notices (especially in proximity to our parks), and remind people how precious our wild life is.

We have had one lone Egyptian goose on the same park for about two years. Now an Egyptian baby which was picked a few months ago wandering along Myrtle Road, has been carefully hand-reared, in Thornhill, and has now flown away and joined the lone goose. (These birds are also monogamous and indig-enous). This immature bird was also wandering in the road, on the sharp bend in Bruges. It will sadly be the next to go if we don’t do something , at least to create more awareness and try even harder to slow down the traffic.
