FOR SALE: F-TYPE R COUPE V8
Richard Darnell was a living legend in the Jaguar Owners Club, Los Angeles. A member since
1966, Richard Darnell was a gentleman's, gentleman. His reputation as a car enthusiast and restorer
of E-Types was the stuff of legend. Richard was always there for any member with advice and
counsel. His knowledge of Jaguar Cars was extensive and thorough. We lost him this year and he is
sorely missed, indeed. We are making an effort to help Sydney with the sale of his F-Type R Coupe
in the hopes that someone in the club will honor his memory and his contribution to the Jaguar
Owners Club. His F-Type was his last great love of cars and watching him and Sydney motor around
at light speed was typical of this Renaissance Man. For more pictures, click here.

Jaguar Land Rover Will Cut Production Due to Slowing Demand, Report Says British automaker still faces headwinds as profits inch up after two lean years.
Jaguar Land Rover plans to stop production or reduce output at two of its factories in the U.K. over the next several weeks due to a dropping demand, Automotive News Europe reports.
The automaker, owned by Indian industrial giant Tata, plans to halt production during selected days starting in late February at the Castle Bromwich plant in the U.K., and will also halt production for full days or half days in Solihull. These periods of downtime will last through the end of March of this year.
The culprit is a 2.3% drop in sales during the last three months of 2019, Automotive News Europe notes, but it's tough to ignore the fact Jaguar Land Rover has had a challenging few years despite having two lineups fairly filled with luxury SUVs and crossovers—seemingly what the market wants at the moment. Indeed, while sales in the U.S. rose just 1.1% during the last three months of 2019, they rose by 24.3% in China, buoyed by refreshed versions of the Land Rover Discovery Sport and the Range Rover Evoque.
"Pretax profit increased to £318 million in the quarter, representing a £591 million year-on-year improvement versus the £273 million loss in the third quarter of last year (before an exceptional noncash asset impairment of £3.1 billion in Q3 of the prior year)," the company said.
"The improvement reflected a combination of the higher China volume, stronger product mix, lower operating costs (including Project Charge) and favorable foreign exchange," the automaker added.
While the last three months of 2019 represented an improvement for the automaker over the same period in 2018, the pace of its resurgence has not been as quick as it had hoped; the company suffered a few missteps in the last five years, including a fairly substantial bet on diesel engines that was rolled out in 2015 just as the Volkswagen diesel crisis broke out. The company also incurred a $4.6 billion noncash charge in the spring of 2019 prompted by its recalculation of the worth of its investments in hardware and property. The automaker has also had to contend with three years of Brexit uncertainty, which depressed car sales in the U.K.
A substantial cut of 4,500 jobs was announced a year ago to help reduce costs, and 500 jobs are still scheduled to be cut at its Halewood factory. While the cost cutting effort had contributed to a modest profit in the last three months of 2019, quite a bit still hinges on the successful rollout of the new Land Rover Defender, which is scheduled to start arriving at dealerships in Europe this spring.
"Conditions in the automotive industry remain challenging, but we are encouraged by the recovery in our China business and the success of the new Range Rover Evoque. Our proactive and decisive actions are creating a more robust, resilient business, transforming today for tomorrow," said Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth, who will step down later this year.
The all-new Defender debuted at the Frankfurt motor show in the fall and will be offered in three main variants based on overall length, with models named Defender 90, 110 and 130.

Engines on Test: Jaguar I-Pace EV400
This review can actually be summed up with
three short answers to three big questions. Is
this the most important Jaguar yet? Is this the
best Jaguar yet? And is this the finest battery
electric vehicle one can buy?
To those pressing Qs the answers are quite
simple: maybe; quite possibly; definitely! But
there’s copy space to fill so let’s try to justify
those conclusions.
On every level, the I-Pace is technologically dazzling. From its compact crossover footprint, JLR’s first BEV is
one joyful drive – granted it doesn’t have the dynamics of a sports car (how would it anyway?) – but it handles so
much better than small SUVs and large sedans. Hell, it even grips corners better than some so-called ‘fast’
hatchbacks.
The performance comes from two in-house Jaguar-designed permanent magnet synchronous electric motors
integrated with the front and rear axles
and pushing out 400ps and a staggering
696Nm torque, which means the I-Pace
reaches 60mph from standstill in just 4.5
seconds. In fact, it’s so rapid that we left
some AMG E-Class at the lights on one
particular stretch of the road during our
testing. Times are changing in the
automotive world and nothing sums up
that transition better than a crossover
BEV leaving behind a fast German sedan.
In fact, the I-Pace has nearly the same
amount of power as Jaguar’s F-Type SVR supercharged V8.
But of course super-hot performance isn’t the primary development pillar behind the I-Pace: getting ahead of its
German rivals and being first to market with an outstanding and high-tech battery electric vehicle with zero
emissions was what Jaguar was striving for. And it’s 10 out 10 for effort, execution and end-product.
A 90kWh battery pack planted within the wheelbase of the I-Pace provides the vehicle with a low center of
gravity and naturally benefits overall driving dynamics. It also plays a central role in delivering a WLTP
combined range of 415km (258 miles) and asides from one very cold morning start, when temperatures sunk to -
3°C, more or less one real-world kilometer equated to one I-Pace kilometer – and that was a worst-case scenario.
A typical commute from ETi Towers to home is 24km for Slavnich and yet the I-Pace range would drop from
230km to 215km.
And then there’s the inside. The I-Pace has one of the most contemporary, modern, chic and sleek interiors
around with beautiful push/pull buttons for heating, a high-tech dual-screen touchscreen that controls just about
everything, and a minimalist sweeping cabin design style. It’s the closest you’ll come to ‘driving’ your iPhone 10.
Our I-Pace cost just under £75,000 (US$98,000) which, granted, is a lot of money for a car like this, but as
Slavnich tweeted, “I’d actually buy one of these”… No wonder he’s applying for a loan!

Jaguar Land Rover unveils ‘autonomy ready’ electric shuttle concept
‘Project Vector’ is expected to hit the streets by 2021
Jaguar Land Rover is the latest
automaker to unveil an electric
and “autonomy ready” shuttle pod
designed for shared use in urban
settings. “Project Vector” is just a
concept, but the UK carmaker
said it hopes to have some version
of the vehicle on the road for
testing by 2021.
For now, the automaker is
keeping most of its specs under
wraps. The vehicle is four meters
long, with a motor and battery
pack built into a flat floor, but
JLR won’t reveal the size of the
battery or the range of the vehicle. The interior can be adjusted for private or shared use as well as
for last-mile delivery service.
THE VEHICLE IS FOUR METERS LONG, WITH A MOTOR AND BATTERY PACK BUILT
INTO A FLAT FLOOR
Unlike GM and Honda’s recently unveiled Cruise Origin autonomous shuttle, JLR’s concept has a
driver’s seat and traditional controls for human use. But the vehicle is built to conform to future use
cases in which autonomous vehicles are more prominent.
The vehicle was developed at the National Automotive Innovation Centre, which is a joint venture
between the University of Warwick, JLR, and its parent company Tata Motor. JLR said it plans to
collaborate with local authorities in Coventry to plan a mobility service from late 2021.
Self-driving shuttles are becoming a somewhat common sight, with companies like Optimus Ride,
Navya, and May Mobility operating small fleets in fixed routes in cities around the world. But it’s
also the kind of business that can be extremely difficult to get right. Drive.ai nearly went out of
business before it was bought by Apple. And Navya, a major autonomous shuttle manufacturer based
in France, recently announced that it would be pivoting away from the shuttle business in favor of
licensing its software to third-party clients.
JLR is no stranger to shared-use autonomy. The company inked a deal with Alphabet’s Waymo to
purchase 20,000 Jaguar I-Paces for a fleet of self-driving taxis. At the time, they said the new
vehicles would officially become part of Waymo’s commercial ride-hailing service starting in 2020.
The company is already testing the new vehicle on public roads around its Mountain View,
California, headquarters.
JLR is one of the automakers to be hard hit by the coronavirus outbreak in China. The company is
reportedly flying components in suitcases out of the country as it races to prevent its UK plants from
closing by the end of the month, according to the Financial Times. GRID VIEW

IEJC, SDJC, AND LAJOC get together for a weekend in Palm Springs!
February 22-23 members of the LA, Inland Empire, and San
Diego Jaguar clubs all got together for a weekend drive to
Palm Springs. We started in Temecula, where the intermittent
clouds and rain gave way to a brief snow shower and a
temperature drop to 37 as we climbed over the mountains. But
by the time we dropped into Palm Springs, temps were back to
70 and the skies cleared.
We checked in at the beautiful Riviera hotel, and then headed
over to the McCormick auction. Some relaxed at the hotel,
some took in the sights of Postmodernism Week festivities
downtown.
Then we all joined for drinks and dinner back at the hotel.
Nedra, Chuck, Mark and Mike all updated members on
upcoming activities, and Loren Bayer from the IEJC won a
prize for best Jaguar related joke (note: D is not day and N is
NOT night…).
Thanks to all for a great weekend lets do it again next year!

Mark your calendars for Judges Refresher Training: 2020 Concours Judges Training. Preparations have begun for our Saturday July 11th Concours #56 being held at Spanish Landing Park East. Hats Off to Mark Hodges, our President and Concours Chair (among other things) for doing the many tasks it takes to make our event happen! Provided below is a summary of the three types of Concours-related training that I will offer this year. Please RSVP to me at least 3 days before any class that you plan to attend so that there will be plenty of refreshments and training materials available. • Concours 101. A classroom presentation, show and tell, and informal discussion of JCNA concours processes and expectations for those unfamiliar with concours but interested in learning about it. No experience is required; you only need an interest in learning more about JCNA concours. One weekend session is planned on Saturday, May 16th beginning at 1:30 PM in the San Diego Auto Museum training room. The session will last about 90 minutes. • Concours 201. A session to get Apprentice Judges and Judges whose certification has expired (or is about to) up to speed so that they can participate as Certified Judges at our 2020 Concours. Experience as an Apprentice Judge or former JCNA certified Judge is a “plus”, but any member is welcome to participate. Hands on judging of Jaguars using official score sheets, JCNA Concours Rule Books and JCNA Judge's Guides will be emphasized. One weekend session (27/28 June TBD) for Apprentices and anyone else wishing to brush up a bit on concours judging processes. A volunteer will be most welcome to host the event. More to follow in these columns. • Concours 301. The formal, annual Judges’ Refresher Training is required each year by JCNA to recertify Judges for the current concours year. It includes a classroom presentation, a review of the more important aspects of the JCNA Concours Rule Book, and discussions of the Rule Book changes for 2020. I plan to highlight the outcome of significant initiatives addressed at the 21 March 2020 AGM and their potential impact on our activities. The written 2020 Judges’ Test will be administered. Everyone is welcome to attend. This is an excellent way for Judges and Entrants to learn more about JCNA Concours Rules. Two weekend sessions are planned: Session 1 on Saturday, May 16th at the San Diego Auto Museum beginning at 9 AM, and session 2 on Saturday, June 20th beginning at 9 AM at Classic Showcase in Oceanside. Each session normally lasts about 3 hours. 2020 JCNA Concours in the Southwest Region. Here are some established 2020 JCNA Concours of interest to SDJC members. I will update this list as JCNA approves and posts the Concours sanctions requested by the individual clubs. • 25-26 April - Club Jaguar A.C., Gran Concurso de Elegancia Jaguar Club Mexico Las Caballerizas, Dos Rios, Huixquilucan, Estado de Mexico (JCNA South Central Region) • 17 May - Jaguar Owners Club of Los Angeles Concours, Muckenthaller Cultural Center, Fullerton, California
• 11 July - San Diego Jaguar Club, Cancer Survivor's Park, Spanish Landing Park East, 3600 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA
• 2-3 October - IEJC Jagstravaganza, Idyllwild Inn, Idyllwild, CA
• 24 October - Jaguar Club of Southern Arizona, La Encantada, Tucson, AZ

We are kindly extending an invitation to the Inland Empire Jaguar Club to attend the 2nd Edition of the Sonoma Speed Festival. To best describe the Sonoma Speed Festival, it is a mix of the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival where an extraordinary group of vintage racing vehicles and Super Cars showcase at the Illustrious Sonoma Raceway—one of the world’s most notable and challenging race tracks located in the heart of California’s Wine Country. Participants and attendees will have the experience of a lifetime, stepping back into the ‘golden days’ of racing, with prestigious race cars and cars that marked the history of motorsports and the car world. The weekend will pack with non-stop track action, interactive displays, and pavilion to explore, in a nutshell, a great weekend for a car enthusiast. Your Club could have a dedicated Car Corral if at least 30 members joined us over the weekend. If, for some reason, you cannot rally 30 cars, you can still take advantage of the discount offer, but your members will be inside another Jaguar or British Manufacturer Car Corral.
