February Recap

IPSF’s Global Gala was a complete success, raising funds for the International Pharmaceutical Students’ Federation (IPSF) Global Health Outreach Trips. More than $4,000 were raised to support this year’s trip to Haiti, where pharmacy and medical students traveled with interdisciplinary health practitioners to provide healthcare for those in need. The door prizes and grand prizes were a major portion of the fundraiser, and faculty took the lead as Dr. Karen Sando took home the Samsung 43” Plasma TV, just one of the select grand prizes.

Talent was more diverse than ever as performers with different backgrounds came together to put on a show for the trips. Performers ranged from UF students to South Florida Filipino dancers to the lovely Jessica Mobley, daughter of our very own Dr. Mobley! We had the honor to hear beautiful music, watch entertaining dance pieces, and were on the edge of our seats when Charleen Lopez and Chris Lacey performed yoga acrobatics!

University of Florida student pharmacists from all four campuses were in attendance, as well as many guests nonaffiliated with the college. It was a beautiful night for everyone to come together to enjoy the entertainment, while supporting a great cause.

Minority Health Fair

On January 26th APhA-ASP members joined forces with a variety of UF’s student pharmacist organizations, UF dentistry

and medical students, and local businesses to encourage healthy living at SNPhA’s 4th annual Minority Health Fair.

APhA-ASP’s Operation Heart, Operation Diabetes, Operation Immunization, Operation Self-Care, and Generation

Rx were among the many patient care projects performing screenings and offering health advice outside of Walgreens

Pharmacy. This event was not only a convenient opportunity for Gainesville residents to learn a broad spectrum of health-related

knowledge, but it was also an exciting way for UF students to gain experience counseling and promoting health awareness.

Operation Heart’s 3rd annual Run for your Heart 5K on Saturday, February

16th was a fun and profitable event with over 40 participants. Participants of this event spread heart awareness in the Gainesville community and raised

money for future screenings.

The Jacksonville campus raised a total of $376.49 for the Winter is Cold... But Advocacy is Hot campaign. Students raised awareness for APhA-ASP’s political action committee during their monthly meeting and through various fundraising events. One event was a social held at O'Brother's, a favorite restaurant for many pharmacy students living in Jacksonville. Participants paid for their entrance into the event and 10% of all food proceeds went to PAC fundraising as well. This was a great way for students to socialize and unwind during a very rigorous academic month.

This semester, the Jacksonville Campus held a GHOT yard sale and a corn hole tournament in order to fundraise for students who embarked to countries in Central America, Asia, and Europe. Jacksonville students showed their support by donating items that were sold in the lively area of Riverside. In addition, the corn hole tournament served as a social and stress-free fundraiser for both students and non-students alike. Participants battled for the grand prize of a customized hand-made corn hole set, as well as a pot of various gift cards. For both events, all proceeds contributed to the expenses for students participating in global health outreach trips.

On February 1st, APhA-ASP’s Operation Diabetes

held its 4th annual Pens & Pumps class, a course designed to give students first-hand experience with diabetes. At P&P 2013, presenters from both the UF Diabetes Center of Excellence (DCE) and Sanofi Aventis addressed diabetes management from a variety of angles.

From the DCE, Kathryn Parker, a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), gave an overview about diabetes. Dr. Karen Sando, PharmD and CDE, gave a hands-on experience with carbohydrate counting, insulin dosing, and the use of insulin pens. Lori Blanton, a Certified Health Education Specialist, taught students about the various insulin pumps on the market. Dr. Sando and Lori, both Type 1 Diabetics, shared their personal experiences with diabetes from a patient’s perspective as well.

At P&P 2013, students also learned about new technology that is currently used to monitor diabetes. Representatives from Sanofi Aventis demonstrated how to use the iBGStar(R), a blood glucose meter that connects directly to an iPhone or iPod touch.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this special event. Be sure look out for more ways to volunteer with

Operation Diabetes this year! Whitney Ruddock, VP of National Projects

Gainesville Campus The Jacksonville Campus recently hosted its second biannual Blue Room Screening. Operation Heart and Operation Diabetes teamed up to offer free blood pressure and diabetes screenings on the ground floor of the medical building outside of the UF College of Pharmacy classrooms. The students had a great time talking to patients and giving them tips on healthy living.

Phi Lambda Sigma is really geared up this semester and excited about all the leadership enrichment events we will be hosting this year. Our recently announced “Peer to Peer Resource” service has taken off with a bang and offers the opportunity for any student pharmacist to be matched with a PLS member for CV review and advice, interview resources, public speaking assistance, and general leadership development. If interested, don’t hesitate to contact myself or any of your campus PLS Vice Presidents. As always, this service is not meant to replace any of the wonderful resources offered by other organizations or the career center, but to serve as a complement to them. Be on the lookout as well for our upcoming OTC counseling competition with great prizes next month. PLS is striving to excel at our mission “to support pharmacy leadership commitment by recognizing leaders and fostering leadership development.” We are working to increase our presence on campus through motivational leadership quotes you may have seen in student common areas and our newly created leadership award we are planning to implement at all campuses, plus many more events yet to come. Have a question about PLS? Don’t hesitate to reach out to us and ask!

In other recent news, our very own Joe Haley participated in the PLS House of Delegates as APhA Annual 2013 in Los Angeles, California this year and served to represent the Iota Chapter in the election of our newly installed national executive board. Congratulations to Juan Castillo and Dean Michael McKenzie as well for receiving the chapter member and chapter alumni of the year award, respectively.

Also, another big congratulations to our newly elected officers: Ashley Rowand PRESIDENT Joe Haley VICE PRESIDENT Petra Estep JACKSONVILLE VICE PRESIDENT Pamela Nguyen ORLANDO VICE PRESIDENT Sheena Mathew GAINESVILLE VICE PRESIDENT AND SECRETARY Amy Kiskaddon TREASURER Amanda Tse HISTORIAN Whitney Ruddock OTC PATIENT COUNSELING COMPETITION CHAIR

Use of the title “Doctor.” Some are arguing that only physicians should be addressed as “Doctor” in a clinical setting.

A PBM auditing bill limiting the power that certain third party payers are abusing. There are many cases in which PBMs have presented pharmacies with steep fines for minor clerical errors and mistakes that are irrelevant to patient care. This has contributed to bankruptcy and closure of community pharmacies in Florida.

APPE ROTATION

SPOTLIGHT!

What do you love most about this rotation? The thing I loved most about this rotation was the variety in everyday activities and wide array of opportunities for hands-on practical experience. Since many times the situations were acute in nature, strict adherence to hospital protocols was crucial; the emergency pharmacist played a key role in ensuring all procedures were followed. It was eye opening to learn and see firsthand, how each member of the healthcare team is necessary to ensure that the patient receives the best quality care.

What is something you wish you knew before rotations? Be flexible and always be proactive in finding and reaching for learning opportunities; make note of this! You have 20 days at most sites, make not only the most, but BEST of it! Objectively assess and evaluate your experience at each rotation, keeping a record of your thoughts. It will help you tremendously when applying for residencies, writing your personal statement, and deciding on what type of program would best fit YOU!

Personal Advice for us younger student pharmacists! Assess the expectations of your preceptors early on and make sure you are both in agreement to the specific requirements of each rotation. Reach out to them (and their residents) for counsel. You will be surprised by how receptive they are to students eager to learn. Stay optimistic! There are nine rotations for a reason; you will find one that fits your strengths and

personality best. Keep looking and moving forward! And lastly…Congratulations!!! You are at the last lap of your journey; make it the best one yet! You all will do fantastic!

Gloria Coltea, former APhA-ASP President

who hopes to work in a collaborative outpatient

clinic, talks about her favorite rotation: Emergency

Medicine clerkship at JFK Medical

Center, where student

pharmacists were required to be present

at all EMERGENCY clinical codes.

Student Pharmacist Responsibilities : • collaborated with other health care professionals • obtained medication histories • performed physical exams • formed specific, problem-focused care plans • prepared the tPA injections • assisted the rapid response respiratory team by

putting in the necessary breathing equipment

This is a GREAT

opportunity to increase

awareness in the community of what WE can do as student pharmacists!
