But maybe that's okay? Psalm 146 advises us not to put our trust in earthly rulers or leaders. While we surely ought to want a President we feel that we can trust, I imagine the psalmist meant something very different, more on the order of, "Do not put your ulmate trust in any earthly ruler (Prince or President, Chief or CEO)." Ulmate trust belongs to God alone. Those who look for a new messiah, a miracle worker, or a master of the universe, who will magically fix everything, are seng their expectaons too high. The psalmist puts us on the right track. Stop looking for a President (pastor, principal, professor, or parent) who is some sort of god. If you get a competent mortal, who gives evidence of possessing a decent moral compass, and who understands his or her own limitaons, be grateful. In the ironic words of one teacher, "Leadership is disappoinng people at a rate they can stand." The great leaders "disappoint" our expectaons of a messiah or miracle worker who will do it all for us. The magic of great leaders is that they sr in us, within their constuents and followers, their own oſten hidden strength and courage. In doing so, they mobilize us to face and deal with our own biggest challenges. Perhaps instead of looking for a new messiah, we might get busy following the one we've got -- Jesus Christ our redeemer. The Monthly Spirit of Hope

Whom do you trust? It feels as if the 2016 Presidential campaign has been going on forever! I, for one am suffering from what has been described as ‘political fatigue’. On many days, the best that we can say about this whole political extravaganza is what a friend of mine often exclaims, with outstretched hands looking to the heavens, "Lord, have mercy." But maybe that's okay? Psalm 146 advises us not to put our trust in earthly rulers or leaders. While we surely ought to want a President we feel that we can trust, I imagine the psalmist meant something very different, more on the order of, "Do not put your ultimate trust in any earthly ruler (Prince or President, Chief or CEO)." Ultimate trust belongs to God alone. Those who look for a new messiah, a miracle worker, or a master of the universe, who will magically fix everything, are setting their expectations too high. The psalmist puts us on the right track. Stop looking for a President (pastor, principal, professor, or parent) who is some sort of god. If you get a competent mortal, who gives evidence of possessing a decent moral compass, and who understands his or her own limitations, be grateful. In the ironic words of one teacher, "Leadership is disappointing people at a rate they can stand." The great leaders "disappoint" our expectations of a messiah or miracle worker who will do it all for us. The magic of great leaders is that they stir in us, within their constituents and followers, their own often hidden strength and courage. In doing so, they mobilize us to face and deal with our own biggest challenges. Perhaps instead of looking for a new messiah, we might get busy following the one we've got -- Jesus Christ our redeemer. Yours in Christ, Pastor Gago

God’s Enduring Signs of Hope

A new season has come! As seasons change and God guides us to move through them with faith in Him, we are reminded in the third chapter of Ecclesiastes, verses 14-15: “I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; God has done this, so that all should stand in awe before Him. That which is, already has been; that which is to be, already is; and God seeks out what has gone by.” There is much good at Hope that has been and still more that will be. All of it will endure in each of us and in the history and future of our church family. Last month, the ELCA’s Mission Investment Fund granted final approval for the $2.4 million loan to turn our past dreams into a bright future. Let us stand in awe before God! Hope House is gone and more demolition work is buzzing, as we expand our space and create new opportunities to share God’s love. Our foundation is strong – shared memories and lessons learned will endure forever, as we make new memories and continue our teachings! The goal is to have the two new wings under roof by the end of November. To stay on track, Hope’s Building Committee Chairperson and staff have started meeting bi-weekly with the Architectural Innovations architects, Landau team and engineers to ensure that all of the congregation’s and project team’s needs are being met in the construction phase. As some of the adjustments we’ve talked about needing to make become reality, we may want to think about increasing our focus on the amazing work God is doing at Hope and give thanks for his enduring love … and patience. Due to grading and construction, we will only have one access point into and out of the parking lot. Please be alert and safe when coming and going along the driveway on the East side of the church. Council is discussing and addressing the needs of traffic flow on Sunday mornings. Also, we now know that the use of Fellowship Hall will cease once roof construction begins. Because of this development, another classroom trailer was ordered to accommodate our Sunday School stu-dents during their new adventure in the programming year. Rally Day is Sunday, September 11! As we give thanks to God for the goodness He has showed us at Hope and all that will be in the future, Landau will be working with us to install a sign along Rowan Road to announce to the community our year-long celebrations of Hope’s Centennial and the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. All thanks be to God for the good that our expansion will enable us to do in the community! And don’t miss the kick-off of this year of celebrations at services the weekend of October 15-16!

A call committee has been formed and tasked by the Council to find the next great Pastor for Hope Lutheran Church. The eight person committee was appointed by the Council and is made up of Hope members Alishia Detisch, Angela Wentz, Charlie Leiss, George Williams, myself (Tim Kirsch), committee co-chairs Kurt Johanknecht and Becky Fry and Senior Pastor Ron Brown. The committee has been meeting since early July and has already completed the important first stage of the process – completing all the requisite ELCA paperwork before the po-sition can be posted so candidates can begin to apply. Many hours of work have already been poured into completing a critical 12 page document that addresses and summarizes everything from who we are as a congregation to exactly what our expectations will be for the se-lected candidate. All required application paperwork has been reviewed and approved by the Council and will soon be formally submitted to the synod. At that time, we will enter into the confidential phase of the call search where we will begin reviewing applications and selecting candidates to interview. Synod leadership has cautioned us to be aware that the length of the call process across the ELCA is averaging between 18-24 months. Additionally, there are already two open Pastor positions within the Pittsburgh synod – and both of those positions have been open now for well over 12 months. We as members of the call committee go into this process very well aware of the statistics and the likely challenges that lie ahead. However, we also enter the process fully understanding that we’re not in this alone. Regardless of our dedication and diligence, we cannot successfully achieve our objective without God’s help. We will be disciplined going through the search process, rooted in faith that God will reveal the ideal candidate to us – in his time. We must be both persistent and patient. God’s hand will deliver our next Pastor. Still, we will work earnestly to find the best suited candidate available for our congregation in the shortest amount of time possible. We believe that Hope Lutheran Church is a special place and that this is a special call that is likely to attract many of the best possible candidates. As a committee, we are not searching for a “replacement” for Pastor Chris. That would not only be too difficult, it would also place an unfair expectation for the incoming Pastor. The selected candidate will demonstrate their own unique characteristics and special skills that will make them a great fit to join the Pastoral team within our active, grow-ing, vibrant and caring congregation. As a committee, we are grounding every aspect of our search process in prayer – and we ask the congregation to please pray with us – and for us. Please pray to God and ask that He bring us the Pastor candidate we are meant to have – to continue to glorify Him and continue to spread the good news of Jesus Christ both within our ever growing church family – and within the Cranberry community. This is a very important task and we do not take it lightly. Please also pray for us. Pray that God gives us the peace, clarity and wisdom as a committee to see and hear the signs pointing us to His chosen candidate. We thank you for your support and we will continue to up-date you throughout the process with as much information as we are able to provide. Submitted By Tim Kirsch

HOPE’S SMALL GROUPS

WELCOME TO WELCA

It is not too early to be receiving information about WELCA's Tenth Triennial Gather-ing: July 13-16, 2017 - Minneapolis, Minnesota. Theme: "I am about to do a new thing. . ." Isaiah 43:19 The theme of the Tenth Triennial Gathering - "All Anew" - calls us to transformation, calls us to become "All Anew." Experience not only the power of the Holy Spirit, but the power of women gathered. Participants will explore ways in which the Holy Spirit changes us, acknowledging that "reformation" and

"transformation" have happened and continue to happen within the faith-filled community of women known as Women of the ELCA. Women will explore personal and communal transformation through Bible study, worship, speakers, learning opportunities, song, film and art. What does it mean to become "All Anew" and carry our transformation into a world that seeks renewal? The Triennial Gathering of Women of the ELCA is one of the largest gatherings of adults in our church. Women travel to Triennial by plane, by bus, by train, by car...by the thousands, coming together in community to rejoice, to serve and to give; carrying out our mission of mobilizing women to act boldly on our faith in Jesus Christ. Please see Jean, Marlene, Pris, Donna or Ruth for more information.

Registration opens September 6. NOTES FROM JEAN: Did you have a God moment today? Did you show your appreciation by putting a coin in your WELCA Thankoffering Cup? Is it getting heavier as we start the second half of 2016? God blesses us each day - no vacation for him!

The next meeting of Hope's WELCA will be on Wednesday, September 14, 2016, at 1:30 pm. All women of Hope are invited to attend. Please watch the Sunday "This Week at Hope" for details.

Notes from the DYFM…. Fall cannot get here fast enough! You may recall I have a passion for anything pumpkin flavored and I love the change in the weather. After the last few weeks we've had of humidity and heat, I am extra ready for the autumn to get here! We're thrilled to have another fun and exciting program year in the making and hope you'll be joining us. We know it's hard to come off of the summer and get back to the grind, but we're going to do everything possible to make that transition at least a little fun! Excuse our mess while we're under construction – we might need to change how we do things just a little, but trust that we're going to be offering the same fun times we always do :) See you soon! WOMEN IN THE WORD

STEWARDSHIP

To Pledge, or Not to Pledge – that is the Question!

We pledge to things / people / organizations all the time and probably don’t give it much thought or think anything of it. We pledge monthly to support our NPR station .. we pledge to pay our utilities on time .. we pledge to our spouse to be faithful .. at Baptism, we pledge to raise our children so that their faith and belief in Christ will grow as they grow .. we pledge to show our support and commitment to various causes. We pray that as a congregation we all will be prayerfully considering our support and commitment to the ministries at Hope. What ministries and projects do you care about and want to support? We pray that you would be open to God’s guidance and that you would be willing to dedicate a pledge to the expenses, operation, and ministries of our church and congregation. We covet your commitment and pledges, so that we can move forward as good stewards of all that is entrusted to us and to be able to plan our ministries based upon that support. In closing, I would like to leave you with these 2 scriptures – “You are generous because of your faith. And I am praying that you will really put your generosity to work, for in so doing you will come to an understanding of all the good things we can do for Christ.” Philemon 1:6 “You will be made rich in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion” 2 Corinthians 9:11 We will be mailing Pledge cards, for the 2017 Operating Budget the beginning of October with weekly dedication of pledge cards as they are received in October.

Carol Flinn, member of Stewardship Committee

HOPE'S STEPHEN MINISTERS CARE

All Christians are called to care for people. But too often people avoid others because they don't know what to

say or do. Stephen Ministers at Hope have been trained to look at situations from a biblical perspective. They

know how to care for and relate to people who have experienced a wide variety of life difficulties and to

individuals who just need to talk to someone. Stephen Ministers reach out to people in helpful and effective

ways, providing one-to-one Christian care to the bereaved, hospitalized, terminally ill, unemployed, relocated,

and other life challenges. They support, strengthen, and expand the caring ministry our pastors and our

congregation provide, ensuring that quality follow-up care is available for as long as is needed.

For more information, please talk with one of our pastors or to Ruth Dobson, Stephen Ministry Leader.

PRAYER REQUESTS

An excerpt from Lutheran Book of Prayer…. “Lord God, heavenly Father, You sent Your Son, Jesus, to this sinful world

to save us from our sinfulness. He lived a perfect life for us and gave us

the perfect example of a master teacher. Thank You for the gift of faithful

teachers who explain the Word to the children and adults entrusted to their care, leading them to knowledge

of Your truth. You have called them to serve You in Your kingdom, and You alone empower them with all the

gifts they need in their blessed vocation. Lord, continue to bless Your Church with faithful, dedicated teachers

who seek to give You all glory in their vocation for the work You do through them. Fill them with the fervent

desire to do that which is pleasing in Your eyes: to do Your will, to walk in Your ways and to extol Your means

of grace. Guard them from any error in judgement, word or deed. Give them patience in dealing with the

challenges of their classrooms. Bring to their remembrance and support them with the promise of Your

presence in every aspect of their life and vocation. May our teachers find true joy, comfort and peace in Your

enduring Gospel as You sustain them in their work, in the name of our dear Lord Jesus. Amen”

Meet Connie Shaffer

I was very excited the day I was transferred and became a member of Hope. My husband Robert “Bob” and I moved to Berkley Manor a year ago. We sold our house, where we resided for 50 years. We have two daughters that grew up there. Cynthia Louise Milligan and Tracy Dawn Donatelli. Cindy lives in Butler and raised her son Nathan and two step-sons. Nathan and his wife Danielle have a daughter, Rylee, who is 7 years old. They are expecting another baby in February.

Tracy and her fiancé Raymond Zupanke live in Freedom and have an 8 year old son, Dalton. Bob and I were married in 1960, 55 years ago! Bob is recovering from 2 back surgeries within the last 9 months. I graduated from High School, Salisbury Elk Lick, Somerset Co, Southwestern PA in 1957. I then attended X-Ray School of Radiology at Memorial Hospital in Johnstown, PA and received my registration in 1960; then mostly worked in Dr. offices that needed an X-Ray Tech. I have met a lot of kind and sharing people at Hope. My hobbies are reading, books, crocheting, decorating, bottles and watching TV. God has been showering his love and blessings on Hope. Pastor Ron has been very supportive of me and my husband.
