Dance Fest 2013 organised by Lanka Dancesport Coun- cil (LDC) will take place from April 26 to May 5 which is a span of two weeks. This year’s Dance Fest will be held in three cit- ies, Colombo, Negombo and Kandy, and will include a Dance Champion- ship, a Dance Show, Workshops and Medal exams. It also happens to be the first time that a Dance Competition of this nature will take place in Negombo. LDC has made a special effort to reach out to Dance Schools out of Colombo as the response received from them is tremendous. The Main Event of Dancefest will be the Dance Championship which will be held in Negombo on Sunday (April 28). T h e venue will be Avenra Hotel, Negombo. This Cham- pionship will have Ballroom, Latin Ameri- can and Salsa Sec- tions in which participants may compete under their respective cate- gories which range from Beginners, Pre-Novices, jun- iors under 12, juniors under 16, Novices, Pre Amateur and Ama- teur for Standard and Latin American, while Salsa will consist of the Novices and open cat- egory. The juvenile events of course are very much anticipated events among the lot as it is a known crowd pleaser to watch our young take to the floor. The medal exams con- ducted within the course of Dance Fest 2013 by Unit- ed Kingdom Alliance (UKA) will provide for a formal world recog- nised certificate for those seeking to qualify themselves with in their respec- tive levels - bronze, silver and gold. In addition to the medal exams there will also be workshops conducted by foreign trainers, which will be free of charge for all LDC members in Colom- bo, Negombo and Kandy. We have also allotted time within the course of Dance Fest for private lessons with for- eign instructors for those who would be interested in having some one on one time with a Pro. The final show at the Queen’s Hotel, Kandy is set to wrap up Dance Fest 2013 on May 5. It will take on a theatre style set up and will go on for two hours. This show will be put on by the winners of the competition. In addition there will be dance items performed by the students of leading dance schools in the country. It is a rare opportunity for the audience of Kandy to witness a show of such a caliber. LDC is a group of dedicated dance teachers, professionals, amateurs and dance enthusiasts driven by their pas- sion for dance, with the unwavering aspiration to promote Ballroom and Latin American Dancing here in Sri Lanka. It has worked tirelessly since its inception in 2011 and it has been rewarded for its dedication and spirit. Forrest Gump Forrest Gump (2001) will be screened on April 23 at 6pm at the American Centre, No 44, Galle Road, Colombo 3. (Running Time: 86 minutes) The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeck- is, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good- hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a sol- dier in Vietnam he’s a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he’s hailed by Richard Nixon. Events over the course of one traumatic night in Paris is unfold in reverse-chronological order as the beauti- ful Alex brutally raped and beaten by a stranger in the underpass. Her boyfriend and ex-lover take matters into their own hands by hiring two criminals to help them find the rapist so that they can take revenge. .. The movie is most suitable for mature audi- ence and is subtitled in English. Elena Elena (2011) directed by Andrey Zvyagint- sev will be screened on April 26 at the Russian Center auditorium, No10, Independ- ence Avenue, Colombo 7 at 6 pm. The film depicts the social and cul- tural distance between the inhabitants of an exclusive apartment in downtown Moscow and a crumbling Khrushchevka in Moscow’s industrial sub- urb. Elena is a woman with a proletari- an background who connects these disparate worlds. She met Vladimir, an elderly business tycoon, in a hos- pital when she was his nurse. Their alli- ance has been described by a critic as “a morganatic marriage nearly a century after the October Revolution.” Elena’s son from a previous marriage is poor and wants money from Vladimir to have one of his sons enrolled in a universi- ty, keeping him out of the compulsory mil- itary service. After Vladimir makes it clear that he is not going to subsidise Elena’s relatives, she decides to poison him in order to inherit his fortune. It is a Dayawansa Jayakody pub- lication. Bringing a whole new sound to the music scene in Sri Lanka, The Band Legend is making a new sound by using electronic instru- ments. This versatile band is equipped with a large selection of music from the old to the lat- est hits which audience love. The band will perform in Nuwara Eliya on April 23 and 27 at the ‘Salalihini Wasanthaya.’ Legend comprises of ten mem- bers with a combination of two percussion artist, three Guitar- ist, Keyboards and vocals. Their goal is to make music that any audience can entertain equally. They also perform for many of the most popular events and functions and also have been the livewire for many popular artists in Sri Lanka. The Indian Cultural Cen- tre (ICC) will host the launch of ‘The Moone- malle Inheritance’ by Rajiva Wijesinha on April 23 at 6 pm. Published in honour of Ena de Silva for her 90th birthday, the book consists of memoirs and also fiction based on characters and situations recorded from a different perspective in the memoirs. The launch will be held at the ICC auditorium located at 16/2, Gregory’s Road, Colombo 7. The Chief Guest will be Yasmine Gooneratne, whose ‘Relative Mer- its’ provided inspiration for the idea of presenting social change through the history of a family. Channa Daswatte, of Geoffrey Bawa Associates, will also speak, in appreciation of Ena de Silva’s seminal contribution to Sri Lankan design. Her latest mural, an imagi- native excursus on the Taj Mahal and its never completed black twin, adorns the entrance of the ICC. The book launch will be accompa- nied by an exhibition of photo- graphs representing the writer’s personal odyssey over the last few years. It covers much travel in Sri Lanka and abroad but is organised in terms, not of places, but of sub- ject areas. These comprise Sun and Sky, Water, Earth, Rocks and Trees, the Arts and People and Ani- mals. The first section of the book describes the progeny of John Marcellus Lewis Moonmalle, great grand father of Ena de Silva, and great great grandfather of the writ- er. It deals largely with those who grew up in ‘The Old Place’ the house in Kurunegala of John Mar- cellus’ daughter Ada and her hus- band Edward Goonewardene. All are welcome. The 50th lecture in the Monthly Lecture series of the National Trust- Sri Lanka, ‘Oru’ and ‘Maha Oru’: their techno cultural aspects by Prof Vini Vitharana & Lt Cdr Soma- siri Devendra will be held at the HNB Auditorium, 22nd Floor, HNB Towers, 479 T.B. Jayah Mawatha, Colombo 10 at 6.30 pm on Wednesday (April 24). The lecture will be simultane- ously transmitted to the E.L. Senanayake Chil- dren’s Library Hall at Kotu- godella Veediya, Kandy. The word ‘Oru’ means a trough - something long, narrow and hollowed out. In the present context it means a water-craft carved out of a single tree- trunk, with its components mainly a heavy wooden out-rigger, sewn or lashed to it. ‘Maha Oru’ is a very much larger version not carved of a single trunk but carvelly constructed of 2” thick planks. Prof. Vini Vitharana has a PhD from London and Ceylon. He was a lecturer in Sinhala and later Asso- ciate Professor Vidyodaya University ; Professor in Sinhala Ruhunu University and Editor-in- Chief, Sinha- la Etymological Dictionary from 2002-05. He is pres- ently a Consultant, publi- cations of the Central Cul- tural Fund. He has been awarded National Award of Kala Kirti , Rohana Ran Silu Southern Provincial Council Award amd Uruma Prasada Ministry of National Heritage Award. Prof. Vitharana has authored seven research works on Geography, Lan- guage/Literature, Archae- ology & Cultural Anthropology. Lt Cdr Somasiri Devendra graduated from the Univer- sity of Ceylon and there- after pursued a varied career: School teacher, Naval officer, Company Director, Chairman Bro- kers Association and Founder Director of the Colombo Stock Exchange. In retirement he took up his early interests and introduced the discipline of Maritime Archaeology to Sri Lanka which led himto becoming a founder mem- ber of the ICUCH ( Interna- tional Committee on the Underwater Cultural Herit- age) which is a scientific committee of ICOMOS. He is currently awaiting publication of his book felicitating Prof. Vini Vitharana titled ‘Oru-Paru- Yathra:De-mystifying Sri Lanka’s shipbuilding cul- ture.’ The National Trust - Sri Lanka conducts monthly lectures usually on the last Thursday of each month. Further, the Korean tele-drama, ‘Janggumi,’ Jewel in the Palace (Sujatha Diyani) recently became extremely popular in Sri Lanka and the growing pop- ularity of K pop among Sri Lan- kan youth shows that there is a new opportunity to enhance relations between the two coun- tries. The Korean government believes that this cultural event and many upcoming exchanges between the two countries will promote friend- ship and strengthen the ties between Korea and Sri Lanka.
