Chestnut Festival – This Sunday Once again we are participating in the annual Chestnut Festival. The Mt Dandenong Pre School team have been work- ing very hard to prepare and plan for what is shaping up to be a magnificent event. This year we are selling our lucky jars, cakes, fairy floss and corn on the cob and so we will require a number of parent helpers. If you are available to help out for an hour or so please leave your name with Julie at the office. Don’t forget to visit our stall to not only purchase one of the fore mentioned items but to see some of our students’ top quality work which will be on display. See you there! ANZAC day news. Thank you to the Duffy and Rowe families who represented our school at the Dawn Service in Kalorama last Friday morning. I attended the Mt Evelyn service and was very pleased to see over 2000 people in attendance. On Wednesday the School Captains and I are heading to the Dandenong Ranges National Park to attend the Legacy ANZAC Day Commemoration Ceremony. They will lay a floral tribute on behalf of our community. This Friday our SLU students are running their annual ANZAC memorial service from 9am and parents and community members are invited to attend. Oval Open for Use Our school oval was finally open for use today and AFL goal posts have been installed at the SLU end of the oval. By next week goal posts will be installed at the other end as well. It was excellent to see the fun our students had at re- cess playing football and soccer and running around on the wonderfully restored surface. We will manage the surface carefully and it may have to be closed for use from time to time to ensure it continues to flourish. NAPLAN The 2014 NAPLAN period is rapidly approaching. This can be a time of great stress for children and parents alike, however I would again like to state that the NAPLAN tests are simply a one off snapshot of your child’s learning. Yes, we all want our children to do their best and teachers have been working hard to ensure that our students are familiar with the process (although tests are never “taught to”). In terms of teaching and learning, it is business as usual at Mt Dandy and although we will do the odd practice test to ensure our students are aware of time frames and the struc- ture of the tests, we will continue to teach the curriculum according to our scope and sequence and following our agreed programs in writing, spelling, numeracy and reading. We strongly believe that by improving the quality of our teaching methods every day, the NAPLAN will take care of itself. With this in mind we would urge all parents to have a conversation with their children in Years 3 & 5 and support the school in taking the anxiety out of the situation. Yes, we would like students to do their homework and in particular, read every night, but that is our expectation every day and not just for the next few weeks. So please find the time to chat with your child and remind them that this is one test and it will not determine their destiny – that will be determined by their ongoing determination and dedication towards lifelong learning! Principal Visit to Mt Dandenong Yesterday I was lucky enough to host the Dandenong Ranges Principals Network Leadership Team meeting. After much discussion about the current state of education and what our future directions might be as a network I conduct- ed a tour of each of our classrooms. The feedback that the leading Principals provided was that the school has a close community feel about it and that each classroom was orderly and the students were clearly engaged in their learning. They said it was a lovely school and that I should be proud. Well, I most certainly am and I thank all of our teachers, staff, students and families for working so hard to make MDPS the magnificent learning institution that it is. Winter Weather Expectations Over what is likely to be a wet and cold winter we would like to encourage all students to ensure that they have ap- propriate clothing. It can be very cold outside and students should have a coat or warm parker at all times. Recently we have had students complaining of headaches and feeling ill after spending recess time outside, in the cold, without a jumper on. On days where there is a little light drizzle or a light shower we expect that the students go outside to play. However if it is raining or extremely wet we have indoor wet day timetables. Please ensure your child has appropriate clothing that is clearly named. ANZAC day news. Thank you to the Duffy and Rowe families who represented our school at the Dawn Service in Kalorama last Friday

morning. I attended the Mt Evelyn service and was very pleased to see over 2000 people in attendance. On Wednesday the School Captains and I are heading to the Dandenong Ranges National Park to attend the Legacy

Lucky Jars! Mount Dandenong PS are starting to organise our Lucky Jar stall again for this year’s Chestnut Festival.

We are asking parents to donate TWO JARS full of fun or inter-

esting things, for example, the jars may be full of hair ties and clips or marbles or plastic farm animals or fun erasers and novelty paper clips, (if you are filling your jar with lollies, please choose the wrapped variety). These are just a few examples, the sky is the limit! The Lucky Jar Stall is very popular amongst children of all ages and we appreciate your donation. Please bring your jars to the office, thank you.

ANZAC Assembly 2014 will be held on Friday, May 2nd in the multipurpose hall

"Audacity"

The theme for this year's ANZAC Day Commemoration assembly is

honouring the courage, bravery, and selflessness shown by serving men

and women of the Australian Forces, past and present.

The Senior Learning Unit students will once again, lead Mt Dandenong

Primary School's ANZAC assembly.

Each grade will lay a wreath or bouquet, these will be taken to the epi-

taph at Five Ways after school.

We are asking for each child to bring a flower or greenery

which will be made into their classes' wreath or bouquet.

Parents, relatives and friends are welcome to attend.

Thank you, Trish

good! The kids did a fantastic job! Some of the girls even worked on a

fabulous animal play, which they performed for everyone.

This week in OSH we

are becoming mad sci-

tingling sherbet and our very own rainbow play dough. We

will also try out some exploding experiments that will blow your mind. Finally we will finish the week with some beautiful

magic water wells.

So come along and join in with the fun, we love seeing new

faces at OSHclub!!

As some of you may be aware, I am fundraising for this year’s MS Walk and Fun Run on Sunday June 1st at Albert Park Lake for either a 5km or 10km walk or run. Multiple Sclerosis is a degenerative disease of the cen-tral nervous system and affects people in different and life-altering ways.

I am seeking assistance from students and their families who might be interested in helping to fundraise with me and form a “Mrs LC” team or families who would just like to do-nate. Once registered with the link below, students with their families, may like to fundraise on my behalf and/or walk with me on the day.

I am happy to share my unfolding story with the school community and I would like to repay MS Aus-tralia for all of their support. Fund-raising directly assists myself and others with MS, to manage symp-toms (which are often invisible to others) so that I can continue to be a productive teacher, mother, wife and friend. My profile page can be accessed with the link below.
