Wishing Tree There is only 6 weeks until Christmas! Each year we set up our own Wishing Tree in the foyer.

The tree will be in our foyer today, Tuesday 19th November.

The Wishing Tree provides an ideal way to teach our children to think of others, especially those

less fortunate.

Simply choose a tag from the tree:

YELLOWYELLOW – for children in Grades Prep – 2

GREENGREEN – for children in Grades 3 and 4

REDRED – for children in Grades 5 and 6

Purchase and wrap an appropriate gift, attach the tag and place it under the tree. Including your

child in the choice and wrapping of the gift is a great idea!

The gifts will be collected on Monday 9th December and will be passed on to “Steps Outreach

Service” (Concern Australia) which provides support for young homeless people.

Thank you for your support.

MURDOCH CHILDREN’S RESEARCH INSTITUTE This month the junior school council will be raising money for the Murdoch Children's Research Institute. This

charity was chosen as it is a charity close to the school's heart and the money we raise could help save many,

many lives!

To donate, please bring a gold coin (or more if you want!) We will gather all the money and go to Big W to buy

raffle tickets on the school's behalf. Entries close on 20.11.13

Facts about CHD • Congenital heart disease is the greatest killer of Australian kids under one

• Every day in Australia six babies are born with a heart defect. That’s over 2000 each year.

• Every week, four precious lives are lost.

• Nearly twice as many children die each year from congenital heart disease compared with all childhood cancers.

• There is no known cure or prevention. Once a Heartkid, always a Heartkid.

• It’s estimated that 32,000 children (under 18 years of age) are currently living with CHD in Australia • Some children acquire heart conditions during childhood, e.g. cardiomyopathy, Kawasaki disease (- 200 p.a *) or as a

result of rheumatic fever • Up to 20% of heart defects are gene-linked abnormalities but for the remaining 80% the cause is largely unknown. They

have nothing to do with diet. These children have congenital heart disease – not coronary, which is what most adult heart

patients have.

• Approx half of the children diagnosed with heart disease require surgery to correct the defect, • For the first time in our history there are more people over the age of 16 with CHD than younger. This is due to medi-

cal advances. In days gone by they were the ‘blue babies’, most of whom died at birth.

BIG W have teamed up with Murdoch Children’s Research Institute to raise valuable funds for heart research.

Each $2 raffle ticket will help raise money towards finding better preventions, treatments and cures.
