The Museum of Science
The Museum of Science is a Boston , Massachusetts landmark,
located in Science Park, just a T
stop before Lechmere, where the Green Line stops.
The Museum began as the Boston Societ of !atural "istor in
#$%&, founded b a collection of
men who wished to share scientific interests. 'n essence, the
museum began as a place where
these men could store and displa skins and other trophies of
their tra(els to )frica and )sia.
Toda, a number of ta*idermed specimens remain on displa,
much as the do at the )merican
Museum of !atural "istor in !ew +ork, as well as man other
museums, teaching children
about the animals of !ew ngland and of the world. 'n #$-, after
the Societ had gone through
se(eral temporar facilities, a building was purchased in the
Back Ba area of the cit and
dubbed the /!ew ngland Museum of !atural "istor./ There it
remained through 0orld 0ar '',
presumabl growing and changing o(er the decades into more
of a science museum and less of a
gentleman1s club for safari trophies.
)fter the war, this building was sold, and the museum was
reestablished under the name /Boston
Museum of Science/. 2nder the leadership of Bradford 0ashburn,
the Societ negotiated with
the Metropolitan 3istrict 4ommission for a 556ear lease of
the land now known as Science
Park. The Museum pas 7# a ear to the state for use of the land.
4onstruction and de(elopment
began in #5$, and the Museum opened in #58#, arguabl the
first all6encompassing science
museum in the countr. 'n these first few ears, the Museum
de(eloped a tra(eling planetarium,
a (ersion of which is still brought to man elementar schools in
the Greater Boston area e(er
ear. The also obtained during these earl ears /Spook,/ a great
horned owl who became a
smbol or mascot of the Museum9 he li(ed to age %$, the longest
an great horned owl is known
to ha(e li(ed.
