The 5th edition of the African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo was a resounding success and saw an unprecedented 36% growth in the number of attendees. The event united over 7000 built environment professionals and resulted in hundreds of business deals being done across both the public and private sectors.

The indoor and outdoor exhibition increased to 221 exhibitors, up from 176 exhibitors in 2016, and for the first time featured six dedicated zones: Concrete; Construction; Digital Construction; Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing; Surfaces and Finishes; and Tools and Equipment - which enabled visitors to navigate their way through Africa’s must attend show for the built environment more efficiently. Furthermore, Africa’s first ever Contractors Corner expanded the shows audience and provided free practical training to the 2 000 small and medium contractors.

Four co-located events took place alongside the Expo namely Captains of Construction and Infrastructure Leadership Forum, the Smart Buildings and Infrastructure Africa Summit, the Digital Construction Expo and the Women in Construction Awards.

Our vision to provide a platform for positive growth and collaboration within the industry was achieved and look forward to raising the bar even further next year.

We look forward to welcoming you in 2018!

Warm regards,

Tracy-Lee BehrPortfolio Director: Built Environment

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE AFRICA SMART BUILDINGS & INFRASTRUCTURE SUMMIT

The 4th industrial revolution affects everyone. During the opening keynote session on ‘How ICT is driving smart infrastructure in Africa’ it was apparent that each African country has its own unique challenges and that there is not a one size fit all solution. We cannot simply focus on technology to solve our problems, technology is only the enabler. We also need to focus on and invest in human capital. The elephant in the room is the high cost of IT in Africa compared to other continents and this puts Africa at a competitive disadvantage. Mobile connectivity has major advantages, however many Africans cannot afford it due to its high costs. Panellists agreed that Africa must find ways of lowering the costs of connectivity. African countries do not invest enough in the human element. African countries are mainly users of existing ICT infrastructure and don’t compete globally because there is lack of innovation in finding solutions to our own problems. This makes it hard for Africa to move to digital transformation.

I have attended tens of events related to smart and future cities, and I found the Smart Buildings and Infrastructure summit very successful in all the dimensions, great high-quality organization & management, relevant content, cutting-edge topics and

high caliber speakers. I’m really glad and delighted to attend such an event.

2017 PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

In 2017 the African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo hosted four co-located events and introduced 6 new dedicated exhibition zones in order to better cater to the entire construction industry value chain. Co-located events included the 3rd annual Captains of Construction and Infrastructure Leadership Forum, the Digital Construction Expo, the Women in Construction Awards and the Africa Smart Buildings and Infrastructure Summit. All together under one roof these events combined to form Africa’s largest gathering of built environment professionals.

In addition to these six dedicated zones, an all-new free to attend and CPD accredited workshop training programme providing interactive training for architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors and many more built environment professionals was added to the onsite experience in 2017.

With enterprise development, industry transformation and gender empowerment identified as important focal points for this year’s programme, the all-new Contractors Corner, hosted in the outdoor exhibition area, provided master classes for small contractors enabling capacity building and skills development.

Strategically hosted in lead up to Africa Day on 25 May this year, the African Construction and Totally Concrete brought together all stakeholders involved in major construction and infrastructure projects in Africa to address strategic issues around funding, international collaboration, project delivery and sustainability.

Warm regards

RECOGNISING EXCELLENCE IN AFRICA

Recognising excellence in Africa, the winners of the 2017 Women in Construction Awards were announced on 24 May at a gala dinner at the Gallagher Convention Centre. The prestigious event was hosted by the African Construction and Totally Concrete Expos with Standard Bank and the NHBRC as gold sponsors. Over 200 guests from the cement, concrete and construction industries applauded the finalists and celebrated the winners. Over 60 nominations were received and a panel of judges, composed of 19 industry experts, identified 44 finalists, representing four African countries. Gender empowerment coupled with industry transformation is key to unlocking the future potential of the construction industry and ultimately closing Africa’s infrastructure gap. The fifth annual Women in Construction Awards enabled industry stakeholders to demonstrate their commitment to empowerment, transformation and the celebration of its women, pioneers and rising stars who have made a vital contribution to development.
