A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

It has been my privilege to serve the Academy for the past four years during a time of transformation in our business. As television, like the entire media industry, redefines itself in the new telesphere, the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has taken a leadership role. Our National Awards Committee has introduced recognition of the new media in all our ceremonies, the first of which is this significant occasion when we mark not only the

first Daytime Em my® Awards in Los Angeles- and the first Em my® Awards at the famous Kodak Theatre - but also award the first Em my for original programming on new media platforms.

On this occasion we honor the icons of television like Caroll Spinney and Big Bird, while also pioneering the future of small screen TV. All these ambitious undertakings staged here today would not have been possible without the close collaboration of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, together with ABC Daytime, our cable partner SOAPnet, and our magazine partner Star.

Peter 0. Price President & Chief Executive Officer National Academy ofTelevision Arts & Sciences

A CONVERSATION WITH CAROLL SPINNEY By Steve Rogers

W:at do a giant, child-like bird and a grumpy trash can monster have in common? If the two in question are

named Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch of television's much celebrated Sesame Street, then it must be the venerable puppeteer, Carol I Spinney! For nearly forty years, Spinney has been splitting his time inside these two iconoclastic

children's characters, enlightening and entertaining children and adults of all ages. In honor of his unique contribution, he is being recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, with its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award .

Spinney took some time from his daily chores at 123 Sesame Street to offer some insights into his world of children's television .

Steve Rogers: What kind of questions do people ask you regarding your tenure on Sesame Street?

Carol! Spinney: Mostly, they tell me what they like best about Sesame Street; how my work affects them; what Sesame Street has taught them. When we started, my daughter Jesse was 18 months old, so I had a built-in audience. One day, when she was three years old, she was sitting at the table and she looked up at me and said, "You know what? This table is a rectangle." I didn't think that was something that a three year old would say and I feel that Sesame Street was responsible for that.

S R: The rumor is that Jim Henson discovered you? Is it true?

"Caroll is the heart and soul of these wildly different but equally beloved characters. Big Bird and Oscar are the 'yin' and 'yang' of one lovely man. My father would be truly grateful that Caroll stuck with these wonderful friends for so many

years:' - CHERYL HENSON DAUG H TE R OF JIM H ENSON

C S: Well, I hadn't tried out for Sesame Street or Jim. I was working in television in Boston at the time and I decided to go to a national puppet festival hoping for inspiration. I decided to put on this elaborate show using animation with rear projection but everything went wrong. Jim came up to me after the show and said, "I really like what you were trying to do there." That was typical Jim Henson. He could be managing several projects at the same time but he was always a really nice, compassionate guy. We really lost something when he died. He was a real, true genius.

"Caroll creates the voice and motion behind these two beloved characters and his talent and ability make him a master of all masters. His passion and drive for his craft keeps the torch lit for all puppeteers and he's an inspiration at Sesame Street and around the world. We all love you and celebrate this recognition of your achievement with you:'

- KEVIN CLASH PERFO RM ER O F ElMO

S R: Big Bird is world famous so it might be easy to overlook your other alter ego, Oscar the Grouch. How much of Oscar is the flipside of Carol! Spinney and why is he an important character to children?

CS: Oscar's values are socially the opposite. Honestly, I'm often surprised at what he's going to say, but my mother and father were very funny people and that's where some of it comes from. Oscar is a nice change after a day of being Big Bird. To be someone different than who you normally are is an interesting experience. I once had this really big, tough guy tell me how much he liked the "nasty guy in the trash can" and then he asked me to insult him! The only trouble I ever have with Oscar is when he's really rude and getting away with it. That's when I stop and question it. In the end, I think it teaches kids that it takes all kinds in this world.

S R: Have you told Big Bird and Oscar about the Lifetime Achievement Award? What was their reaction?

C 5: Oscar said, "I don't deserve it," while Big Bird said, "What's that?" Truthfully, a lot of their humor is based on what someone says to them, not me. Sometimes, with Oscar, when I "face" him, I'm intimidated. I stammer to answer him. But, you know, he has a heart of gold. He wouldn't want anyone to know that, so he hides it. Big Bird on the other hand, he's not hiding a thing. He's just all heart!
