NAAG’s belief’s

The group believes that bullying is a very serious issue for a lot of people with intellectual disabilities

The group believes that bullying happens everywhere – in the services they use and in the communities they live in.

Gravitas – connection with people/to people/ cares about making peoples lives better.

Research Grew from a Need

This type of group are our teachers - real listening

More emancipatory inclusive research needs to be done in this area – relevant

Inclusive Research

Inclusive research is research in which disabled people are active participants, not only as subjects but also as initiators, doers, writers and disseminators of the finished research

Inclusive Research – only way

Used an inclusive research methodology

Employed 3 co-researchers (people with intellectual disabilities)

Training around what research was and how to do it (focus groups) and facilitation skills - IRN influenced this process

NAAG participated in designing the research methods?

Research group participated in designing all the documents that were needed (support the research) to assure relevance, accessibility, and usability

Learning’s

People do not know theirs rights, what there entitled to and what type of services they can have

Choice is not a luxury it is a given right

People are not given opportunities to develop their capacity

Sometime people did not talk if staff were in the room

Learning's

I have learned not to talk for much in a focus group, my job was to ask questions

TEAM work was very important

We had to have backup plans

More inclusive research needs to happen – people need to tell there story

Learning's I learned that research was

about listening to people and not giving my opinion

I learned that it was very hard not to say what I felt about bullying

I was able to draw pictures of what people were saying in the focus groups
