It is my pleasure to extend a warm invitation to attend the 2017 NASDAD Convention.

Your commitment and effort to attend, through travel and just the expense of closing your offices, will be rewarded!

One of the great things about these weekends is a renewing of connections with our

peers, past, present and soon to be colleagues. With Pasadena’s proximity to Loma Lin-da we want to encourage you, those who very soon will join our profession, and hope

you will become active members of NASDAD both during and after graduation.

An amazing weekend is planned for your enjoyment!! Please join us for a great tour of The Gamble House in the afternoon on Thursday, October 5. The Gamble House hopes

to inspire appreciation and understanding of fine historic architecture through the exam-ple. The Gamble House, the most complete and best-preserved work of American Arts

and Crafts architects Charles and Henry Greene. On Friday, you have most of the day to explore the amazing city of Pasadena (check out our website for a list of museums,

restaurants, and other things to do!) and if you’re a member of the Board of Directors

we’ll see you on Friday afternoon for the Board meeting. A NASDAD convention isn’t complete without good food so plan to join us for Friday dinner, Saturday lunch, and

the Saturday evening banquet! Speaking of the banquet, you seriously don’t want to miss out on the special entertainment that will be provided by the Mt. Rubidoux SDA

Church Choir! And during the banquet we’ll introduce the newest NASDAD Life Members, those individuals who have paid their NASDAD dues for 25 years!!

We are blessed this year with amazing and unique speakers. The continuing educa-

tion course will be on Sunday morning, October 8, from 8:00 am—12:00 pm. The title is “Practical Periodontics - Trends and Research Findings” and is sure to be of great inter-

est to dentists and dental hygienists! The Spiritual Emphasis for the weekend will be unique First-Person presentations. You are sure to gain a blessing by receiving the Word

through this method!

Whether you have been to

many NASDAD Conventions or this is your first one: I

look forward to meeting each one of you!!

Sincere regards, Your

NASDAD President Robert Stacey, DDS

Every 2nd Sabbath, sweet sounds of praise can be

heard ringing throughout the Inland Empire. It is

the sound of the Mt. Rubidoux Seventh-Day Advent-

ist Church Choir, warming hearts and lifting souls as

they minister to their con-

gregation in Riverside, Cal-

ifornia.

The choir has been under

the leadership of Dr. Alan

B. Woodson since 2002.

Dr. Woodson, (a graduate

of Loma Linda School of

Dentistry Class of 1987), is

best known musically for

the many years he has spent conducting the award-winning choir Another Peace.

In 2008 the choir was awarded the title of The Best

Church Choir in the Los Angeles region in the Veri-

zon Wireless “How Sweet the Sound” national

Church Choir competition. Their titles include: The V-

Cast People’s Choice Award, Best Large Choir, and Best

Overall Choir in the Los Angeles region.

The Mt. Rubidoux Choir has

shared the stage with gospel

music industry icons Israel

Houghton, Donald Lawrence,

Marvin Sapp, Hezekiah Walk-

er, Kurt Carr, Kirk Franklin,

Tye Tribett, Dorinda Clark,

Vickie Winans, and musical

legend, Stevie Wonder.

The choir performs every 2nd

Sabbath in their home church at 5320 Victoria Ave, Riv-erside CA . The choir may also be heard by visiting

"Rubigospel" on YouTube or visiting the church web-

site@ www.mtrubidouxsda.org for a live broadcast of

church services.

The Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is

an outstanding example of American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and fur-

nishings were designed by architects Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary Gamble of the Procter & Gamble Company.

The house, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978, is owned by the City of

Pasadena and operated by USC.

Weekend Spiritual Emphasis

RICHARD STENBAKKEN, Ed.D

About Dr. Stenbakken

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to meet Moses? To have lunch with Jonah

(Hold the fish sandwich, please!), or talk with Peter, Andrew, John or Pilate? Professional-

ly prepared, powerfully presented first person narratives can pull you into the stories and

realities of the Bible in new and exciting ways: In ways that appeal to first graders, to

sophisticated and learned theologians, and to those in between.

Dr. Richard Stenbakken was born in Denver, Colorado and has lived and traveled around

the world. He is married to Ardis and they have 1 son and 1

daughter. Dr. Stenbakken has four Masters Degrees plus an Ed.

D. in Family and Community Education; his wife, Ardis, edited

the women’s devotional books for the past 18 years. She also

served as Director of Women’s Ministries at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists before retiring in Colorado.

Dr. Stenbakken served for 24 years in the military followed by 14 years as the Direc-

tor of Adventist Chaplaincy Ministries at the General Conference of Seventh-day Ad-

ventists. In the mid-1970s, while he was in the army, he was given an assignment

to be in charge of a Saturday night chaplain’s Christmas program. This was his initial

first-person presentation. He told the story of Inn Keeper telling Luke about the night

of the nativity. This presentation was so well received that another chaplain asked

him to present it again for both worship services on following Sunday. One character,

the Inn Keeper, has “snow balled” into 70 characters, presented across the US, Can-

ada, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some of his characters are available on DVDs so they

can go to places that he cannot, therefore reaching many more individuals. Of partic-

ular note, his characters have presented many times for the US Senate/Staff Bible

Study group, various Camp Meetings, and numerous Pentagon Prayer Breakfasts.

Healing The Whole Person Our acceptance of the Love of God is taught us in child-hood in many ways, including songs such as “Jesus loves me this I know”. Unfortunately our understanding often does not expand much beyond this simple expression of

a complex topic. Perhaps this is why some relegate ser-mons on “love” to the category they entitle “Elementary” or “Basic”. Indeed if as John says “God is Love” theology at its core is the exploration of this theme of the love of God. A fas-cination with “weightier doctrine” may uncover our lack

of understanding of the complexity of Gods Love as well as its almost incredible aspects. Even more is the truth that, Jesus wants us to progress beyond the "unbelievable/incredible" mental aspects, to an experi-

enced credibility of the gospel in our lives. Perhaps our fascination with the "weightier doctrines” ac-tually belies our lack of comprehension or experience of the “Love of God” and indicates a pleasure in distraction, akin to that of the juvenile who will do anything but his homework.”

Student Attendance

If you attended the 73rd NASDAD Convention last year in Colorado Springs, you’ll remember how nice it was

to have a few students attend and participate in the programming. The energy brought through music and

worship was very enjoyable. Their attendance was made possible by a number of generous NASDAD members

who donated funds to cover a large portion of their expenses. As a result of overwhelming student participa-

tion, the special funding to Sponsor Student Attendance has been depleted. Isn’t this a wonderful

problem to have?! We would, however, like to encourage students to attend THIS YEAR in Pasadena. Encour-aging young, future dental professionals by including them in this year’s convention is good for them and for

NASDAD. Your generosity is again needed so that we can sponsor as many students as possible.

Whether or not you are able to attend this convention, would you consider including a donation to the

‘SPONSOR STUDENT ATTENDANCE’ line that you will find on the registration page of this newsletter?
