Christmas 2016 ~ Christus Natus Est ~
“Glory to God in the highest and on earth Peace”
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
In the midst of darkening skies the Light is come! Over two thousand years ago in the village of Beit Sa-
hour, not far from Bethlehem, an angel appeared to a group of lowly men and women who were tending sheep.
These were people who would have been looked down upon because of their menial task of raising the animals that
would be used in the Temple sacrifices. Imagine their joy at the news that the One who would save them, EM-
MANUEL, had been born in the city of David, very close to where they were. The sign that this was true was that
they would find an infant wrapped in swaddling cloths lying in a manger, a container used for feeding animals. The
shepherds, hoping for liberation from the oppression of their burdened life, went running to the manger. These
were the first to receive the message of the birth of the Savior, before any kings or wise men would arrive and see
the Messiah these men, women and children of the fields were the first to see the Christ, the Lamb of God who
would take away the sins of the world.
Jesus was born in history so that he might teach us how better to be children of God, brothers and sisters in
the one family of God. He comes to show us the Father’s mercy, becoming himself the door of Mercy through
which we enter into salvation. The sign is the same as that received by the shepherds, a child in a manger, the God
of Merciful Love. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not
perish but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world
might be saved through him.” (John 3:16-17)
At this time of year we all receive many requests for financial assistance. As much as possible it is our duty
and salvation to do what we can. In your generosity, we ask that you not forget the retired priests of the Archdio-
cese in the Christmas collection. Also, please use the enclosed envelope at your discretion to help alleviate the ex-
penses of the Parish. It is here in the church that we gather to celebrate in a very special way God’s love for us.
Our Offertory at the Christmas Masses is given entirely to care for the retired priests of the Archdiocese. As has
been done in the past few years, the money from the Kissing of the Baby Jesus will be sent to a charity that pro-
vides for the needs of children.
As we pray for each other in a true sense of gift giving and Christian charity may you, and those you love,
know the JOY and PEACE of that first Christmas, which Joseph and Mary and the shepherds in the fields experi-
enced. We pray that the Peace & Blessings of our loving God may be yours abundantly at Christmas and in the
coming year.
Sincerely,
Fr. Walter Carreiro, Fr. Cristiano Barbosa, Fr. Ray Kiley, the Parish Staff & Members of the Shalom Community
P.S. I recently met with a few concerned parishioners to look at ways to facilitate repairs and modifications to the church
interior. There are still a few problem areas, especially with water leaks, but we hope to come up with a plan very soon and
will keep you informed!

Natal 2015 ~ Christus Natus Est ~
fossem usados nos sacrifícios do Templo.
o Messias, o Rei recentemente nascido.
As

The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas) (Cycle A)
As we observe in today's reading, the Gospel of John in-cludes highly philosophical and theological language. One example that particularly stands out is John's use of the ex-pression, “Word of God.” This expression (logos in the Greek) borrows from a concept found in both Jewish and Greek thought. In Jewish thought, this phrase describes God taking action—for example, in the Creation story and in the Wisdom literature. In Greek, or Hellenistic, thought, the logos was understood as an intermediary between God and humanity. John and others in the early Church adopted this language to describe God's incarnation in Jesus. As the term was used to express the trinitarian faith of Christians, the word Logos came to be equated with the Second Person of the Trinity. In this prologue to the Gospel of John, the main themes that will be developed in his Gospel are introduced. These themes are presented as dualities: light/darkness, truth/falsehood, life/death, and belief/unbelief. We also hear in this prologue a unique aspect of John's Gospel—the motif of testimony. John the Baptist was sent by God to testify about Jesus, the light. Others in this Gospel will also offer testimo-ny about Jesus. The reader is invited to accept this testimo-ny, which bears witnesses to Jesus, the Son of God. But even more directly, Jesus' action and words will themselves testify to his identity with God as God's Incarnate Word. Thinking about Jesus' birth in these theological and cosmo-logical terms seems particularly appropriate as we celebrate the feast of Christmas in the darkness of winter. At this time, nature itself seems to remind us of the darkness of sin. Into this darkness, in the midst of our sinfulness, God comes to dwell among us. John's Gospel reminds us that through the Incarnation, God saves us from the darkness of sin and makes us his children.
A primeira leitura anuncia a chegada do Deus lib-ertador.
We would like to thank all who participated to our Family Breakfast and wish you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Classes will start at January 8.

Meet Msgr. McDonough— A Priest and a GeneralAs a native of Boston, Msgr. John P. McDonough never dreamed he would travel the world, bringing the presence of Christ to our military serving abroad. But for thirty years, that’s exactly what he did. As a two-star general, Msgr. McDonough’s call as a military chaplain was to ensure that men and women were able to practice their faith—Catholic or otherwise—as they served their country.
Now at 88 years of age, Msgr. McDonough reects on a priesthood well-lived and well-served. He resides at Regina Cleri, a retirement home for senior priests in Boston, where he ministers to his brother priests, celebrates Mass with them daily, and continues traveling to parishes around the Archdiocese to assist with services.
To help ensure priests like Msgr. McDonough are cared for as they age, please support the Christmas collection this year.
