Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity

By the time that you read this in the council newsletter, it will be too late for any remaining input. I thought that I would take this opportunity to share some of the numbers with you. I sent out 185 Fraternal Surveys, Member Information Sheets, and Member Interest Sheets—of which 29 Fraternal Surveys, and 51 Member Info Sheets & Member Interest Sheets were returned.

This survey is turned in by each council to let supreme know how many man-hours and how much money is spent on the various service programs. The Survey of Fraternal Activity Individual Worksheet is how you let the FS know what each member of the council has done—so that it can be reported to supreme.

TOTAL AVERAGE Number of sick visits 700 44 Number bereaved visits 425 28 Number of Blood Donor 25 3 Church Activity Hours 2087 95 Community Activity Hours 851 77 Youth Activity Hours 685 98 Habitat for Humanity Hours 99 25 Culture of Life Activity Hours 107 12 Veterans Activities Voluntary Service hours 140 23 Food for Families Hours 353 27 Special Olympics Hours 115 29 Misc Activity Hours 138 28 Fraternal Service Hours 784 60

These are some pretty impressive numbers!

The Member Information Sheets were sent out so the members could see the information that supreme and the council have on them—and update any out of date or missing contact information. I would like to move as many newsletter mailings from USPS to email, in order to reduce expenses on the postage—we are currently mailing 85-90 newsletters each month . . . . .

You can update your contact info by going to the supreme website at: http://www.kofc.org/en/contact/address_contact.html

The Member Interest Sheets were sent out so that members could let us know service program areas that they would like more information about, and maybe would help with these service programs . . . . Members were also able to let me know that they would like to hear from our Insurance Agent, Cecil.

Into the Breach An Apostolic Exhortation to Catholic Men

To outline the challenges we face and devise a plan of battle, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted of Phoe-nix has written this groundbreaking docu-ment, Into the Breach. Addressed originally to the men in his diocese, the document is made available here to all Catholics by the Knights of Columbus. The Knights are pleased to partner with Bishop Olmsted in making this document more widely available to all college men and in providing the following study guide.

Report of the 4th Degree

A word from the Faithful Navigator; January was a

month filled with national news. The president took his oath while thousands demonstrated against issues which the Knights support. People with pink caps carried signs supporting abortion. Friday, January 27, there will be a Pro Life march in Washington, DC. We as Sir Knights can spiritually offer support to the Marchers by our prayers.

Every now and then it is important to refresh our reasons for Joining the Fourth Degree. We are dedicated to promoting patriotism enlightened by the Catholic Faith. We work for the application of Christian principles in all levels of democratic government. We call upon our members to distinguish themselves with heroic deeds for God, Country, and Order. We support religious, civic, and charitable causes that are consistent with our Order’s high ideals. We oppose the institution and development of forces averse to good Christian government. We educate our members and the world at large to be defenders of our democratic institutions. And the Fourth Degree, the highest degree, in the Knights of Columbus, provides members with a greater knowledge and appreciation of our Catholic heritage.

Club President Memo:

I would like to thank our Building Managers Paul Brewer and Jeremy Wilkins and the following Brother Knights who came out to help take down the Christmas decorations and clean the out attic this morning: GK Francis Bagarella, FN Terry Kandzor, Doug Warren, Dan Olvera, Dale Holzboog, Jim Brady, Thomas Meloche, and John Mitchell. The roof replacement resulted in a lot of debris into the attic which had a lot of our council archives and other interesting artifacts.

I would also like to give everyone an update on our plans for bingo. The Washington State Gaming Commission will not issue a license until we get an official IRS non-profit designation; preferably as a 501(c)(3). The Club board is working diligently to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible so we can start up our bingo operations.

Vivat Jesus,

Peter T. Rivera, PGK, PFN President, Knights Club of Oak Harbor

SEMINARIAN SUPPORT

The Council assists in helping support 2 seminarians . . . . Members of the council are encouraged to send them a card at special times of the year. Or better yet, write them a letter of support and encouragement.

Kurt has been a Knight since 2005 and a PGK of Mt. Angle Seminary Council and is the son of Vice Supreme Master Karl Hadley. He is currently in his pastoral year at St Joseph Parish.

Henry has just recently started as a sponsored seminarian of the council—I am getting ready to write a letter of introduction and send our first check for seminarian support.

Kurt Hadley St. Joseph Parish 625 S. Elliott Ave., Wenatchee, WA 98801. DOB: 11 October

Henry Christopher Mendez Mt. Angel Seminary 1 Abbey Dr. St. Benedict, OR 97373

DD Note:

We are putting together a District 19 Knighthood Degree (or 2nd Degree) Team and are looking for Brothers to volunteer. The speaking parts of the degree need to be memorized in order for the team to be certified by state.

We have a lot of 1st degree members that want to advance but can't—please help your Brothers and volunteer to be on the 2nd Degree Team.

This year's theme from Supreme is Building the Domestic Church. Look for a display of 15 different books supporting the Domestic church soon in the lobby of the church.

Thanks to each and everyone of my Brothers for all you do for the Council and Church!!
