Introduct ion
For the past few years, a select group of Christian social thinkers have
engaged in dialogue with free-market econo mists concerning the m orality
of market activity. This friendly interd isciplinary exchan ge inspired the con-
ception of a n ew subdiscipline that sought to synthesize central aspects of
theology and econom ics, thereby giving rise to a n ew body of scholarship
termed econom ic personalism . This essay introdu ces econo mic p ersonalismin its historical, philosop hical, and practical com pon ents.
Economic personalism is a science of the morality of marketsan at-
temp t to an alyze the m oral ramifications of econo mic activity in light o f a
theological vision of the human person. This includes a detailed explora-
tion o f econo mic theo ry, history, and meth odo logy, as well as actual mar-
ket practices, all viewed from the perspective of the Christian faith,
particularly its recognition of the dignity of the human person and the
concern for justice that stems from th is recognition.
There have been attempts to add ress econom ic developm ent within th e
theoretical context of Christian moral concerns. These previous efforts
sought a Christian economics as part of a comprehensive social theology
that could elaborate the p roper m oral structures for all areas of social life
political, cultural, and econom ic.
These past efforts have shown them selves inadequ ate in o ne respect or
anoth er. A typical weakness is to o ffer principles of m orality for the m arket
that lack either sufficient kno wledge of morals o r sufficient kn owledge of
econom ics. In eith er case, the result is an in ability to achieve a true synthe-

on principles of classical liberalism, personalism, Thom ism, Austrian econom ics, and natural
law theology, Novak strings together a coherent body of thought. His influence has been
widespread. Placed in what is sometimes called the neo-conservative troika with George Weigel
and Richard John Neuh aus, Novak has lectured and published h is way into the Mont Pelerin
Society, leading th eological associations, and even a 199 4 Templeton Prize. Defenders of bo th
