Nagar bus terminus on the evening of July 18. Two persons on a bike tried to snatch a chain from Preethi (26) of Saidapet at a bus stop in T. Nagar when she alighted from a bus. When Preethi managed to hold on to her chain in spite of being dragged for almost 10 feet, the pillion rider grabbed her mobile phone and the two assailants raced away. When the fleeing robbers realized that Vigneswaran (a resident of Mogappair) was trying to apprehend them, they did their best to shake him off. “They turned, zigzagged and zipped through narrow lanes,” Vigneswaran said. “The culprit riding the bike lost control and they fell when the bike skidded to a halt near the T. Nagar bus terminus. I nabbed one of them and some onlookers nabbed the other. We took them to the Mambalam police station,” said Vigneswaran. Police identified the culprits as Naveen and Nirmal. They were involved in many cases of chain snatching and robbery. They were remanded to judicial custody. Biker chases and nabs twophone snatchers

incident in T. Nagar, chased the two offenders on his bike andcaught them with the help of passersby near T. Nagar busterminus on the evening of July 18.

Two persons on a bike tried to snatch a chain from Preethi(26) of Saidapet at a bus stop in T. Nagar when she alightedfrom a bus.

When Preethi managed to hold on to her chain in spite of beingdragged for almost 10 feet, the pillion rider grabbed her mobilephone and the two assailants raced away.

When the fleeing robbers realized that Vigneswaran (aresident of Mogappair) was trying to apprehend them, they didtheir best to shake him off.

I-T dept issues advisory onfiling returns

to file their income returns for the year 2017-18 on or beforeJuly 31. In a statement, the department warned of a fine ifassessees fail to file their returns.

With insertion of new section 234F in Income Tax Act,taxpayers are required to pay a fine of Rs.1,000 in case totalincome does not exceed Rs. 5 lakhs and return is filed after July31 and before March 31, 2019. Similarly Rs.5,000 will have tobe paid as fine if the income exceeds Rs. 5 lakhs and return isfiled after July 31 but within December 31 and Rs.10,000 if theincome exceeds Rs. 5 lakhs and return is filed after December31 but before March 31, 2019.

Malls/cinema halls ignore govt.’s order toapply for building license

The Chennai Collector’s ulti-matum to shopping malls andcinema halls in the city to ap-ply for building license hasevoked lukewarm responsewith almost none responding.The district administration hadordered such buildings to applyfor license under the TamilNadu Public Buildings (licens-ing) Act, 1965, for the safety ofvisitors. Sources in the collec-torate said that only one shop-ping mall in Royapettah hadapplied for license so far. “Theothers have ignored the warn-ing. We will initiate stringentaction, including sealing struc-tures, against those failing toabide by the order,” a revenuedepartment official said.

Chennai has seven shoppingmalls with movie screens, andabout 160 cinema halls.

convened a meeting with rep-resentatives of shoppingmalls and cinema halls on May17 following accidents in twoshopping malls. According tothe act, an existing structureshould not be used as a publicbuilding in the absence of a(building) license. Schools, col-leges, hostels, libraries, clubs,lodging house, hotels and allbuildings functioning in an areaof more than 1,080 sqft usedfor organizing public meetings,marriages and parties comeunder the purview of publicbuildings. Official sources saidthat the license s were issuedafter inspecting various as-pects of the structure includ-ing planning permission,completion certificate, firesafety features and structuralstability of the building.

“In Chennai, only a fraction

of the commercial establish-ments has applied for the build-ing license,” the official said,adding that the license mustbe renewed every three years.

Moses (34), who gave ateenager a lift on the night ofJuly 14, ended up losing hismobile phone. However, hemanaged to catch the boy aftera short chase and retrieved hisphone. The teenager was thenhanded over to the police.

Moses (a resident of Nesa-pakkam) was on his way homefrom his office in Anna Nagarwhen the incident took place.

A few kilometers ahead ofMGR Nagar Market, a teen-ager gave him the thumbs upfor a lift. He pleaded with Mosessaying that he would miss thelast bus from MGR Market at11p.m and would not be able toget any vehicle to go home ashe had also run out of money.

Taking pity, Moses offeredhim a lift. While getting off, theboy grabbed Moses’ mobilephone and ran away.

But Moses managed toregain his composure and chasehim on his bike and, with thehelp of a few others, nabbedhim. He was beaten up beforebeing handed over to the police.

Gate missing from Corporation playground

There is no gate at the entrance to the small Corporation playground in BakthavatchalamStreet, West Mambalam.

The damaged gate was removed several months back, but has still not been replaced.The students playing in the playground told this reporter that due to the absence of the gate,

cattle enter the playground and dirty it. They often squat in groups in the middle of theplayground, they added. In the morning and evening, the playground is also being misused forparking vehicles.

In his police complaint, Veeramanikandan said that his wife Arasihad removed the chain and placed it near an open window in thebedroom of their ground floor flat. She was alone in the house at thattime.

T. Nagar policearrested 3 persons onJuly 2 in connectionwith the mob assaulton two youths fromOdisha in KamarajarStreet, T. Nagar, whowere suspected to bechild-lifters.

Local residents saidmany who ganged upto beat the two youthswere passersby and didnot even know whythey assaulted them.

The prime accusedhas been identified asBalamurugan (24).

P. Aravindan (DCP,T. Nagar) said thatBalamurugan wasarrested for instigatingthe mob attack on theevening of July 1 andspreading false newsabout the purportedchild-lifters.

The victims wereidentified as GopalSahoo and BinodVikari.

They are undergoingtreatment in a localhospital.

According to a localshopkeeper, thevictims were chasedby the crowd andpinned down in front ofhis shop.

He said that therewere more than 50persons in the mob.

According to thepolice, the victims weredaily wage workersresiding in a narrowlane near TiruvalluvarSalai.

Suspicion that theywere child lifters arosewhen they were seenwith a child living in theneighbourhood.

Sometime justbefore 9 p.m the boywas seen runningtowards his motherand dropped a ten-rupee note when Sahooand Vikari saw him.They reportedly pickedup the boy, handed himthe money, and puthim down.

A young man in thelocality saw them andasked the boy’smother whether thefamily knew the duo.As she replied in thenegative, the manimmediately conveyedhis “concern” to hisrelative Balam-urugan, who alertedothers and stoppedSahoo and Vikari, thepolice said. The twosensed danger and triedto flee, but the crowdgave chase and pinnedthem down, a seniorofficer investigatingthe case said.

A big bunch of thick EB cables has been blocking the entrance to a house in Anjugam Nagar,3rd Street, Jafferkhanpet for several days.

A resident told Mambalam Times that in spite of several complaints, EB officials have nottaken steps to route the cable away from the entrance or relay it below the road surface.
