4 Matings made either by computer or on-farm evaluator.
4 Restricts inbreeding to 6.25% or less, if desired.
4 Focuses on increasing the herd life and longevity of your cows.
4 Provides different mating options e.g., grazier, show ring type or herd life. Provides different mating options e.g., grazier, show ring type or herd life.
4 Uses LNM, Cheese Merit or Fluid Merit for production consideration.
4 Ability to look at matings on the farm.
“Through use of the CRI MAP programour heifers are uniform and sound.”Craig Brei, Brei’s Hillside Acres Leopolis, Wisconsin
“Once we select our criteria for sires, then everything is laid out for us. We don’t have to sort through all the available sires ourselves. It’s a convenience factor.”Mike Rohe, Rohe Dairy Freeport, Minnesota
“We use CRI MAP to produce a medium-sizedcow with good type that produces the component numbers we want on our milk check and, probably most important of all, will last a long time in our herd.”Bill Thiele, Thiele Dairy Clearwater, Nebraska
“It was an easy transition to the CRI MAP program. For the past six years, it has been trouble-free and working well. It’s really a smooth operating program.”L-S Dairy Yerington, Nevada
“CRI MAP makes breeding decisions easier. Our CRI representative and I choose the bulls to include. Then the best mating decision is made for us.”Perry Lilley, Lilley Farms Inc. Smyrna Mills, Maine
“CRI MAP is a very useful tool which provides a high quality service for our customers. It can also be described as a versatile and economic tool that helps dairy producersimprove the phenotype, production and health of their cows. The mating program helps our customers make adequate use of their semen investment.”Reproducción Animal S.A. de C.V. CRI Distributor, Mexico
CRI MAP HELPS MEET YOUR BREEDING GOALSDairy producers across the world can now utilize the ultimate in dairy mating programs. CRI MAP (Mating Appraisal for Profit), released globally by Cooperative Resources International (CRI), has unequaled flexibility in recommending the best matings for any dairy scenario.
“MAP, the first comprehensive mating program in the industry, has been used to mate over 20 million animals in the United States since its release in 1966. Currently over 2.5 million cows and heifers in the United States are mated each year through MAP,” Diane Schnell, CRI Education and Program Support Manager, noted. “Throughout its history, the program has evolved to accommodate new technologies and the changing industry. Now we are able to bring to the international arena a new, enhanced version of MAP.”

“This advanced version of MAP benefits producers through increased profits, improved cow conformation, improved production and healthier, longer-living cows,” explains Schnell. “Through CRI MAP, this cooperative meets our goal of maximizing the profits of members and customers worldwide by effectively using top genetics to build a more profitable kind of cow.”
THE CRI MISSION“Provide products and services as effectively as possible to maximize the profitability of members and customers worldwide while maintaining a strong cooperative.“
This mission statement really paraphrases what CRI MAP can do for you:
Provides a complete phenotypic evaluation on each animal scored.
Offers unmatched flexibility in sire selection.
Helps you sort through sire summary information “overload.”
Manages inbreeding and controls lethal recessives in your herd.
Increases the herd life/longevity of your herd.
Assists you in controlling semen inventory.
Puts you in control of developing your herd goals.

ACCURATE COW EVALUATIONOne of the biggest advantages of linear scoring is that distinct traits are individually scored. Within CRI MAP, two linear scoring systems are available. Cows can be scored on a 9-point or 50-point system.
Describing the cow without comparing her to an ideal is another major advantage of linear scoring. The traits are actually scored from one biological extreme to the other. Depending on the scoring system being used, traits such as “legs-side view” are scored from 1-9 or 1-50. In both cases, 1 would be an extreme score for “posty” legs. Depending on the scoring system, the highest possible number (9 or 50) would describe extremely “sickled” or “set” legs. The ideal would be somewhere in between. The CRI MAP evaluator only has to describe each trait, not judge which is best.
The center section of the booklet details the 17 physical traits and two management traits with examples of how they are scored.
The image above demonstrates linear
scoring on the 50-point system.

LINEAR EVALUATIONSThe important points to remember about linear evaluations within the CRI MAP program are:
4 Cows are compared to their contemporaries for each trait and the differences weighted by the heritability of that trait.
4 Deviations from contemporaries are adjusted for the herd’s genetic level.
4 Pedigree information is included and a “cow index” calculated and standardized for each trait. This “cow index” is the same as a TA (Transmitting Ability) on a sire and is the basis for all sire recommendations.
4 The system of linear evaluations follows the principle of giving extra emphasis to a cow’s “worst fault,” especially in the areas of feet, legs and udder. This unique approach avoids incorrect matings and assures you of the most rapid genetic progress for your herd.
INBREEDING CONTROLControlling inbreeding in your herd is very important and Controlling inbreeding in your herd is very important and CRI MAP takes that into account. With the large database CRI MAP takes that into account. With the large database available today combined with good farm records, inbreeding available today combined with good farm records, inbreeding available today combined with good farm records, inbreeding available today combined with good farm records, inbreeding is restricted to a maximum of 6.25 percent or a dairyman’s restricted to a maximum of 6.25 percent or a dairyman’s preferred level. Most matings are below 3.125 percent inbreeding. Most matings are below 3.125 percent inbreeding.
FLEXIBLE SIRE SELECTIONIn general, the CRI MAP evaluator “tailors” the genetic game plan to In general, the CRI MAP evaluator “tailors” the genetic game plan to your specifications for production, health and fitness, or type. With the your specifications for production, health and fitness, or type. With the use of MPG, a sire directory or investment guide, our evaluators can assist you in choosing bulls that will do your herd the most good.

They have the technical expertise that comes the technical expertise that comes from thorough training, combined with from thorough training, combined with “cow sense” from years of experience “cow sense” from years of experience evaluating cows. evaluating cows.
ON-THE-SPOT ANALYSISNormally, CRI MAP recommendations are computer-generated. But, if you desire, the CRI MAP evaluator can make on-the-spot sire recommendations without the aid of a computer. The same principles are used for on-farm recommendations, but the evaluator can add certain subjective considerations. For example, by observing the offspring of a previous mating, the evaluator can bring additional insight into a new mating.
UNMATCHED FLEXIBILITYCRI MAP has unmatched flexibility. We can breed the kind of cow that fitsyour operation. Using the Lifetime Net Merit (LNM) index approach, you can tailor your game plan to fit your breeding goals.
Herdlife and Long Productive Life … “Show” Type …
Graziers … Fluid Markets … Feet & Legs … Udders …
Her worst fault.
YOUR GOALS ARE VITALAs a dairy owner or herdsman, you have the opportunity to add your goals to the mating formula for your herd. For example, concrete flooring makes feet and legs a more important consideration. If that’s your housing system, the computer can place extra emphasis on these functional traits. In another herd, udders may be of particular concern. If the udders are unhealthy because they are carried too low, MAP can focus on those traits to improve the udder health in your herd.
GENETIC GAME PLANOur unique “genetic game plan” allows you to pre-select bulls based on LNM, milk, protein or butterfat production, reliability, Productive Life, Daughter Pregnancy Rate, TPI™ (Type-Production Index), Sire Conception Rate, calving ease, price per semen unit or other important factors of your choice.
You can eliminate certain bulls from consideration, based on your preferences. Or you can add bulls you might have in inventory that may not be in the CRI lineup, as long as they have a linear type summary from their respective breed association. This is another example of the flexibility of the CRI MAP program.
EXPRESS MATINGWith more large herds using corrective mating programs, CRI has a developed a quicker, express option. With this CRI MAP option, the evaluator scores only the extreme type traits of each animal. All others are considered to be average. This method forces the computer to consider sires that will correct the most obvious type computer to consider sires that will correct the most obvious type problems. There is a direct relationship between the number of traits in a selection program and the amount of progress that can be made in a single mating.

Based on the premise very angular cows may lack the capacity to produce to their genetic potential, one must avoid breeding such cows to bulls that sire the same kind. Conversely, very strong cows may lack desire to milk and mating strong breeding bulls with them should be avoided.
UNMATCHED FLEXIBILITYCRI MAP has unmatched flexibility. We can breed the kind of cow that fitsyour operation. Using the Lifetime Net Merit (LNM) index approach, you can tailor your game plan to fit your breeding goals.

With the your specifications for production, health and fitness, or type. With the use of MPG, a sire directory or investment guide, our evaluators can assist you in choosing bulls that will do your herd the most good.
The genetic game plan allows extra emphasis on certain traits. It also The genetic game plan allows extra emphasis on certain traits. It also gives you a choice of two or three sires for each cow, based on your selection criteria. You can include any domestic or foreign bull with an Interbull proof.

ACCURATE COW EVALUATIONFOR THE BEST RESULTSTo get the most from the CRI MAP program, your herd should be evaluated at least once or twice a year. This allows you to include new additions to the herd and update sire recommendations. As herds become larger, owners have found it advantageous, and necessary, to have groups within the herd evaluated several times annually. With sire summaries released three times a year, enrolling your herd on a regular
mating schedule makes it easier to keep current with new additions to the proven sire lineup.
CRI MAP REPORTSGetting your mating recommendations in a user friendly report has never been easier. With CRI MAP you can get two reports – a semen requirement report and a mating recommendation report – in a PDF format. If this report doesn’t work, you can make your own using the option that creates a CSV file with which you can import the data in Excel or other programs. This allows you to print as many cows on a page as you want. Also, many programs allow you to import CSV files directly into a database. This makes dairy record management much easier.

The new Web-based CRI MAP program was developed to better serve producers worldwide. An expanded sire database includes over 300,000 Interbull sires with the ability to incorporate additional individual sires as needed. The program includes flexible mating options to produce cows for the commercial setting, show type or grazing operations. Using unbiased sire selection, genetic game plans are tailored for each herd based on the individual herd’s chosen traits of emphasis.
