Tests have shown that on a 90-degree day, a white roof will only have a temperature of 110 degrees at its surface, while a black roof will have a reading of 190 degrees. Builders and architects understandablywant to enhance the appearance of their projects by the use of color and will not want to be restricted to white, even though that will save energ y. This is where the new, ULTRA-Cool coatings from BASF canbe such a valuable asset because heat reflectivity is greatly increased without sacrificing color choices.

T h e P R O B L E M :

Y The exponential growth of urban areas has produced what is called the "Urban Heat Island" effect, with heat-absorbing roofs being among the chief culprits.

Y The temperatures in the air above urban Heat Islands can be as much as twelvedegrees hotter than the surrounding suburbs.

Y The unfortunate results of hotter-than-normal temperatures are higher air-conditioning costs and greater consumption of electricity.

Y The excess heat and increased energy production has also led to alarming increases in the levels of smog and ozone.

IN COOPERATION WITH THE U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY, LOCAL GOVERNMENTS AND AN ORGANIZATION

CALLED THE GLOBAL HYDROLOGY AND CLIMATE CENTER, THE "URBAN HEAT ISLAND PROJECT" WAS FORMED IN 1998. THE

FOCUS OF THIS GROUP IS TO DEVELOP WAYS TO MAKE CITIES COOLER AND THEREBY REDUCE POLLUTION PROBLEMS AND

SAVE ENERGY. DATA FROM VARIOUS METROPOLITAN REGIONS GATHERED BY THIS GROUP HAS SHOWN STEADY INCREASES IN

"HEAT ISLAND" TEMPERATURE OVER SEVERAL DECADES. LOS ANGELES AND SAN DIEGO ARE AVERAGING AN INCREASE OF

0.8°F PER DECADE; WASHINGTON DC IS AVERAGING 0.5°F PER DECADE AND TOKYO, JAPAN IS AVERAGING 0.6°F, TO NAME A

FEW EXAMPLES.

ULTRA-Cool Pearlescent Colors

ULTRA-Cool coatings are available in the following POPULAR COLORS. The number under each color name and code represents its percentage of solar reflectivity. The number in parenthesisrepresents, in most cases, the significantly reduced solar reflectivity found in the same color formulated conventionally.

The BASF ULTRA-Cool™ SolutionBASF Industrial Coatings has produced a new, premium cool coating for metal substrates, called ULTRA-Cool, which isavailable in both Fluoroceram®* and Ultraceram™ quality. This coating dramatically increases the reflectivity of mediumto darker colors to such a degree that the product will meet the Energy Star specifications for Cool Roofs. BASF is anEnergy Star partner and is in the process of qualifying ULTRA-Cool coatings for the Energy Star program.

The ENERGY STAR® RatingFor a roofing material to receive an ENERGY STAR® rating, the solar reflectance for a steep sloped roof (the typical residential roof angle) must be a minimum of 25%, dropping to no less than 15% after three years. For a low-sloped roof, the minimum solar reflectance must be a minimum of 65%,dropping to no less than 50% after three years.

D e p a rtment of Energy re s e a rch has shown that one additional percent of reflectivity in a coating, on average, will re d u c eroof temperature by one degree. Imagine the affect it would have on a region if ULTRA-Cool coatings became the standard ?This revolutionary reflective coating product can be a significant factor in lessening the Heat Island Effect as well asreducing warm weather energy consumption.

THE OVERALL B E N E F I T S OF ULTRA-COOL COAT I N G S~ HEAT IS REFLECTED AWAY FROM BUILDINGS.

~ SMOG IS REDUCED WHEN ENVIRONMENTAL TEMPERATURES ARE REDUCED.

~ ENERGY COSTS WILL BE SAVED BECAUSE OF COOLER INTERIOR SPACES.

~ LIFE EXPECTANCY OF THE ROOF ITSELF WILL BE INCREASED DUE TO LESS EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION.

~ MONETARY INCENTIVES ARE INCREASINGLY BEING OFFERED FOR SWITCHING TO REFLECTIVE ROOFING PRODUCTS.

~ ALL THE ADVANTAGES OF GREATER REFLECTIVITY CAN BE HAD WITHOUT SACRIFICING COLOR CHOICES.

~ EMISSIVITY VALUES OF ULTRA-COOL COATINGS EXCEED 80%.

When these advantages are added to the generally recognized benefits of metal roofing — such as greater fireresistance, lighter weight, seamless integrity, color choice and longevity — you can make a wise choice for yourselfand the environment.

The average solar reflectivity percentage of the above standard ULTRA-Cool colors to the right, excluding pearlescents, is 38.3,while the average solar reflectivity percentage for the same conventional colors is 25.2. The average of the eight darkest colorsshown above right would have a 30.1 percent reflectivity compared with a 13.9 percent reflectivity for conventional colors.
