From the Chief Executive officer

Bert Schmidt President & Chief Executive Officer

ne of the best things about my job as President and

CEo of WHRo is the staff I have the privilege to lead. They’re as diverse, talented and dedicated as any public

media team in the country. I get to see many of them almost every day, but because of the nature of their work (and their hours), I see some of them only rarely.

one of those is Jack Frieden, who produces and hosts a one-hour program called The Vocal Sound on Jazz (Saturdays at 11pm on WHRV 89.5FM.) For Jack, it’s not so much a part-time gig as a labor of love. And because VSoJ will start its 35th year of production next January, I thought it was high time for a salute to the show and its creator.

In 1978, Jack was a jazz aficionado who was writing a music column for Metro magazine and occasional music articles for The Virginian-Pilot. One of his first columns for Metro was an indictment of WHRo-FM, which in those days was primarily a classical music station. Because there was another full-time classical station in the market (WGH) and no jazz programming anywhere on the dial, Jack felt WHRo wasn’t serving the public’s musical needs.

Two days after the column appeared, Jack got a call from WHRo’s program director, Joel Seguine. To his surprise, Seguine agreed with him – and said the station was planning to expand its programming to include jazz. In the course of their conversation, Jack said he had an idea for a show: one that would feature jazz vocals. Seguine said he’d keep it in mind.

About a year later, Jack got a call from WHRo’s jazz producer, Joe Lowery, wanting to explore the idea of the vocal program. At that time, Jack’s radio experience consisted

of making mix tapes for his girlfriend Jodie: using rudimentary equipment, he’d record favorite songs, and then “back-announce” them so he could share them with her. But he was game and Lowery was willing to mentor him – and today, The Vocal Sound of Jazz is a Saturday night staple for lovers of the genre, and Jack and Jodie are happily married with grown children.

Jack’s a successful and well-respected insurance executive, but his love of vocal jazz had led him not just to music reviews and radio, but to record producing as well. In 2001, he formed VSoJAZ Records and released the much-lauded album “Intersection” by Laura Martier. A second album spotlighted Diane Hubka, accompanied by some of the jazz world’s finest guitarists. Quite a resume for a man who not only doesn’t, but “can’t sing and can’t play an instrument.” He learned to love music, he says, because of that, not in spite of it.

Jack approaches the music as a living, breathing genre, and loves to expose his listeners to new artists. Current favorites: Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Diana Panton and Nicki Parrott (who’s performed locally.)

When I said the program is a labor of love for Jack, I wasn’t kidding. As I was writing this column, I learned that 34 years ago, his salary was $10 a week – and today, after one raise, he’s all the way up to $12.50!

elia and Alan are both widowed and in their seventies. When their respective grandsons put their details on Facebook, they

find each other – and rediscover a passionate relationship that started more than sixty years ago.

If that sounds intriguing, consider that Alan is played by Derek Jacobi (I, Claudius; The King’s Speech; My Week With Marilyn and more) and Celia by Anne Reid (upstairs, Downstairs, Marchlands, Dr. Who and more). If that weren’t enough, they’re joined by a host of talented English actors, including Sarah Lancashire as Caroline, Nicola Walker as Gillian, Tony Gardner as John, Dean Andrews as Robbie, Nina Sosanya as Kate, Ronni Ancona as Judith and Josh Bolt as Raff.

Written by Sally Wainwright (Scott and Bailey, unforgiven, At Home With the Braithwaites) and directed by Euros Lynn (Black Mirror, Sherlock) and Sam Donovan (Skins, Secret Diary of a Call Girl), Last Tango in Halifax completed its first season in the uK in late 2012. The premiere ranked

within BBC one’s top ten highest-rated drama series in 2012, attracting 7.3 million viewers.

Writer Sally Wainwright based the story on the experience of her own mother Dorothy, who was put in touch with her childhood sweetheart Alec after being widowed at the age of 75; Alec had also recently been widowed. The couple fell in love all over again and got married.

Last Tango in Halifax is a six-part series, part comedy and part drama, with subplots that are as timely as Alan and Celia’s story is sweet. It’s about romance in every form, and about second chances whenever they come in life. There’s zesty humor, great characters and glorious dialogue. Last Tango in Halifax is about timeless love in a modern setting. It’s part of our Fall Showcase programming – all of which will inspire, entertain and delight you!

On the cover

Last Tango in Halifax premieres Sunday, September 8th at 8pm on TV15Just one of the many terrific shows coming your way in our Fall Showcase!

celebrating teachers The Center for Regional Citizenship

he StoryCorps’ National Teachers Initiative (NTI) celebrates and honors the courageous work of public school educators nationwide.

By recording, sharing, and preserving the diverse stories of teachers, StoryCorps NTI hopes to bring greater public awareness of teachers’ work and call attention to the invaluable influence they have on us all.

The National Teachers Initiative has focused special attention on the work of educators in both rural and urban public school districts that are striving to increase the number of students who graduate prepared for college and careers.

In 2012, through a partnership with WHRo and the old Dominion university Center for Educational Partnerships, StoryCorps NTI came to Hampton Roads, and over the course of three days, facilitated 17 interviews with teachers from across the region.

During one of those conversations, Harleé Patrick sat down with Kate Musick, her former third grade teacher at T.C. Walker Elementary School in Gloucester County.

When they first met, Harleé was dealing with challenges at home and was behind in reading and math. Kate Musick saw a troubled child, and took the time to give Harleé the support she needed. By the time she reached high school, Harleé was taking advanced level courses, including honors English.

Through WHRo’s American Graduate initiative, a selection of these local stories is available online at americangraduate.whro.org On monday, September 16th at 7:30 am on WhrV 89.5 Fm, Sondra Woodward will broadcast one of these incredible stories in honor of teachers who go beyond the classroom to help their students.

For students who are struggling, sometimes the difference between success and failure is a teacher who takes the time to listen.

Please join WHRo in celebrating these heroic teachers, who are changing lives every day.

f you ever find yourself watching WHRo with your kids on weekday mornings, you may be wondering, “Who is playing those catchy songs between episodes of Super Why and

radio highlights THE LAST WORD WhrO 90.3 Fm

My Word started on the BBC in 1956, bringing wit, whimsy and wisdom to millions of listeners over the years. Sadly, we’ve learned that My Word and its companion My Music will cease distribution at the end of this month, which means we’ll no longer be able to hear Denis and Frank’s hilarious derivations of phrases; or Dilys and Antonia’s descriptions of obscure works. These shows were great radio – intelligent, entertaining and timeless – and we were privileged to carry them. They will be missed.

THIS AMERICAN LIFE SAturdAyS At 12NOON WhrV 89.5 Fm

Every Saturday at 12noon, WHRV listeners join almost 2 million others for a show that’s won every major award for broadcasting since its debut in 1995. This American Life is produced by Chicago Public Media and distributed by PRI, which also distributes Bob Edwards Weekend and To The Best of our Knowledge. There’s always a theme to each episode, and a variety of stories on that theme are explored in what creator and host Ira Glass refers to as “acts.” The themes range from the world of patent lawsuits to the joys (or not) of summer camp. You never know what you’re going to hear – but you can be sure it’s always compelling!

WIND AND RHYTHM tueSdAyS At 9Am • WhrO 90.3 Fm

To many, band music means Sousa marches, but those who love the genre enjoy college marching bands, British brass bands, wind and brass ensembles – as well as symphonic band transcriptions of orchestral music, newly-commissioned works for band, and much more. Each Tuesday, Connoisseur Classics explores the literature for these instruments, and is adding a new feature to the line-up: an hour-long program called Wind and Rhythm, hosted by Doug Brown. Wind and Rhythm will be heard Tuesdays at 9am on Connoisseur Classics.

WORK ‘N MUSIC September 2 • NOON • WhrV 89.5 Fm

From mining to manufacturing, housework to ranching, this Labor Day special offers surprising information about work and those who do it. Touching on the labor movement, the return of overseas jobs, manufacturing – plus quitting, firing, and hiring – the info is highlighted by music and songs from Tom Paxton, Jim Croce, Sawyer Brown, Gordon Lightfoot, Joan Baez, Jim Brickman, Hank Snow, The Silhouettes, John Denver, and many more – plus classic comedy by George Carlin. Work ‘n Music, September 2nd at noon on WHRV.

A DIFFERENT WAY TO THINK ABOUT AGING

For a personal consultation with our senior care navigator call (757) 856-7030 or visit

riversideonline.com/services/seniors.

It’s about honoring and supporting what people want as they get older — “As I age, I will control my destiny in a place of my choosing.” Seems simple enough. But in the world of healthcare where “we know best” has been the tradition, asking people what they value as they get older is a true innovation that’s making a difference in the lives of thousands.

It’s an approach that promises to change the way people think about aging. And it all begins by asking what matters most. That’s what happens at Riverside, where we have world class physicians and the most comprehensive network of services in the state dedicated to helping you reach your life goals as you age.

As I age, I will control my destiny in a place

of my choosing.
