Carnegie Classification
Every institution is given just a single Carnegie Classification (so we are The New School, and not listed separately for Lang, Parsons, NSSR or any other college). Classifications are based upon metrics reported to the Federal Government through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)
Until 2005, the Carnegie Classification was only what is now called the “Basic Classification.” Under this classification, The New School is classified as a DRU: Doctoral/Research Universities
After 2005, the Carnegie system of classification became more complex, adding five additional axes of comparison. The New School’s complete classification is our Basic-Classification plus: • Undergraduate Instructional Program: A&S+Prof/HGC: Arts & sciences plus
professions, high graduate coexistence • Graduate Instructional Program: Doc/HSS: Doctoral, humanities/social sciences
dominant • Enrollment Profile: MU: Majority undergraduate • Undergraduate Profile: FT4/S/LTI: Full-time four-year, selective, lower transfer-in• Size and Setting: M4/R: Medium four-year, primarily residential
The current location for complete classification information is:http://carnegieclassifications.iu.edu/• Use the “Institution Lookup” button on the top left to search for “The New School”• You may also use the additional links at the top to learn more about the methodology
and read classification descriptions• Once you have found The New School via the institution lookup feature, you can
click the boxes next to one or more of the six axes of classification to find the other institutions in the same classification.

changeAccording to Federal Law, the Race/Ethnicity categories are used to describe groups to which individuals belong, identify with, or belong in the eyes of the community. The categories do not denote scientific definitions of anthropological origins. The designations are used to categorize U.S. citizens, resident aliens, and other eligible non-citizens. Non-resident aliens are reported only within this category. U.S. citizens are first reported by their self-designated ethnicity: Hispanic. For those U.S. citizens who self-identify as non-Hispanic, reporting is done by self-designated single race. For those who select more than one race, the category of two or more races is used. Any U.S. citizen not self-identifying ethnicity or race is reported under not reported.

changeAccording to Federal Law, the Race/Ethnicity categories are used to describe groups to which individuals belong, identify with, or belong in the eyes of the community.
