Welcome to The New School Summer Camp 2018! This summer we have 50 camps taught by New School teachers and professionals in the community for current 1st-8th graders. From Rock Band to Trail Running to Video Game Development, there’s something for everyone at The New School!

Kindergarteners will enjoy our traditional day camp with daily field trips to places like Starlight Skatium, Gator Golf, a Naturals baseball game and the Fayetteville Public Library!

1ST - 8TH GRADE CAMPS

CAMP PROGRAM 9:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.

Extended Day Options - FREE BEFORE CARE 7:30-9:00 a.m. AFTER CARE 3:00-5:30 p.m.

These camps are for 2017-18 1st-8th graders. If your child is currently a 3rd grader, he/she will be considered a 3rd grader at our camp.

Camp prices vary and are in the range of $275-$350 per week.

Lunch and snacks will be provided by The New School.There will be no camp on Wednesday, July 4.

CAMP DESCRIPTIONS • 1ST-3RD GRADE

ART EXPLORATION with Katie Terry $275

Come spend the week learning and doing art! We will be drawing, painting, playing games and more. This camp offers the freedom to explore artistic interests through creativity, medium, technique, interpretation and reflection. Animals, landscapes, people, food and music are some of the subjects we will use to further our artistic experience in this indoor and outdoor camp. Maximum 20

COSTUME DESIGN with Samanthe Burrow $275

Have an interest in fashion, costume design or theatre arts in general? Welcome to Costume Design and Technology! Learn about the basic concepts of designing costumes for the stage by reading a play and taking it from page to stage. A week long exploration in how to make costumes for a theatrical production, campers will learn basic figure drawing techniques, rendering skills using watercolors and colored pencils, and some basic sewing skills! The week ends in a final theatrical fashion show in which students design their own costume and get to fully realize it on stage. Maximum 20

STORYTELLING with Cheyenne Autry $275

Do you love stories? Fairytales? Superheroes? Do you want to write your own adventure? Then this camp is for you! Campers will explore the craft of storytelling and creative writing, paying attention to literary techniques such as figurative language, character building and plot. Over the course of the week, campers will stretch their imaginations with writing prompts and invent their own characters and settings. At the end of the week, campers will share their stories they have copied into their own booklets. Maximum 10

PROBLEM SOLVING IN MINECRAFT with Mitchum Dillard $275

Campers will embark on a journey into a digital world which is entirely theirs to change and manipulate together. Limited resources and space will force them to work together and problem solve as a group in order to thrive. Welcome to Minecraft, where one’s wit and imagination are the only true constraints. Maximum 15

WEEK 1 JUNE 4-8

SKETCHBOOK with Shelby Williams $275

This camp helps explore all the different ways to keep a sketchbook as well as different mediums used to create art. We will cover basics of drawing, shading and coloring, and we will touch on other ways campers can express themselves. This is a fun hands-on camp for any budding artist! Maximum 15

DISC GOLF with Luke Shepard $275

Enjoy the New School campus in a different way! From basic to advanced, campers will throw through or over various obstacles, learn the rules, and enjoy being outside. Improve your dexterity and challenge your friends! Maximum 10

BEGINNERS IMPROV with Jake Lewis $275

Young comedians in this camp will learn valuable listening and collaborative skills through the use of short-form improvisation games. Campers will be free to be their wacky, silly selves, all while coming up with everything on the spot! Maximum 15

WEEK 2 JUNE 11-15

WEEK 3 JUNE 18-22DANCE with Kaylee Smith $275

Campers will learn different styles of dance that include Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, and more! They will learn to express creativity through dancing, while strengthening and stretching their bodies. We will perform group activities and learn to move in different ways and in sync with others. There will be a performance at the end of the week. Maximum 15

FAIRYTALE ART with Katie Terry $275

From Alice in Wonderland to Jack and the Beanstalk, this camp combines art, music, games and fun! Through crafting, storytelling, dress-up and face paint, we will incorporate play into art! Campers will use their creativity and imagination to explore these well known tales. Maximum 15

LEGO ROBOTICS with Mitchum Dillard $275

Campers will be introduced to the Mindstorms EV3 Lego Robotics Kit. This Kit includes everything from variable output motors, to light, color, touch and motion sensors. You will also have the ability to custom design, build and do countless tasks! Campers will learn to work in teams with every task getting a little more challenging than the last. The fundamentals of programming as well as robotic design, construction, and troubleshooting will all be learned. Best of all, a lot of fun will be had while doing it! Maximum 15

We will incorporate PE style games into our daily schedule and have a competition at the end of the week for all the campers. Maximum 20

WEEK 4 JUNE 25-29

LET’S BUILD A PLAY with Jaddy Russell $220

Campers will explore how to use movement and text to create a short play of their devising. We will use theatre games, movement and music to creatively write, memorize and perform our script by the end of the week. Maximum 20

FIBER ART CAMP with Shelby Williams $220

Campers will explore different art types with yarn and fabric. Whether it is knitting, weaving, screen printing or sewing, we are going to cover the basics of what it means to be a fibers artist. Campers will work with hands-on art mediums and will take home pieces of their own by the end of the week. Maximum 20

DANCE with Kaylee Smith $220

Campers will learn different styles of dance that include Jazz, Ballet, Hip Hop, and more! They will learn to express creativity through dancing, while strengthening and stretching their bodies. Maximum 15

HAND LETTERING with Halee Smith $275

Have you ever seen gorgeous writing on Pinterest or signs and thought, “What kind of handwriting wizard does that?!” It is simply modern, faux calligraphy and anyone can do it! Over the course of the week we will go over the types of letters, how to connect them, and also how to make them “dance” on paper. We will also learn how to embellish our own unique handwriting and how to mix and match writing. By the end of the week campers should know the basics of hand lettering so they too can become hand lettering wizards! Maximum 15

FIRST TEE GOLF with Logan Davis $350

The First Tee is a great program for kids, boys and girls alike, that is located all over the nation! Not only do they offer golf camps in the summer on their own, but they are partnering with TNS this summer. They will help by teaching our staff and students in a new sport or a sport they already play. Not only will the campers learn golf lessons, but they will learn valuable life lessons through learning patience, good sportsmanship, honesty and discipline through the simple game of golf. This camp will be off campus, require a signed waiver from parents, and lunch will be provided. Maximum 13

CHESS with Chess Wizards $350

Chess Wizards is a premier chess education company providing fun and informative chess lessons to students. Campers will be divided into groups according to their chess experience. At the end of the week, each student will have a chance to participate in a chess tournament. Minimum 10, Maximum 20

COMEDY BASICS with Jake Lewis $275

Comedy has been around since the beginning of time, but many of us still wonder what makes something funny? Why do we laugh at some things, but not at others? In this camp, young comedians will learn what makes things funny in modern comedy, such as the double take, pratfalls, and zany sound effects! Maximum 20

This camp is all about learning the tricks of the trade using watercolors to create beautiful artwork. Campers will get a confidence boost in their own skills while creating new art of pigment and paper. This camp will cover basics and tips on how to improve drawings with watercolor. Maximum 15

Trail Running with Logan Davis $350

Have you ever seen someone running down a sidewalk or on a trail and thought, “I wish I could do that!?” If so, then come to trail running camp this summer! We will explore various parks and trails in Northwest Arkansas as we run many miles, depending on ability. We will focus on technique, stamina and mileage increase. After a nice run we’ll find a place to swim & cool off. A signed waiver is required and lunch is provided. Maximum 13

HIKING AND SWIMMING with Paige Quinn and Halee Smith $275

This camp will help get us out in nature and enjoy all Northwest Arkansas has to offer! We will spend the mornings hiking at various locations and swim in the afternoons. Come ready to get active in the sunshine with this camp! A signed waiver is required and lunch is provided. Maximum 13

Stage Combat is as close to magic as we will get on stage-using misdirection, sleight of hand, and other tricks to make an audience see what we want them to, all while remaining safe with our partners. In this camp we will learn what it takes to be a good partner, how to have their safety and care as the priority, and how to be in control of ourselves and our own bodies. Using what they learn, campers will create their own comedic story for a short slapstick scene. Maximum 20

Rock out with Mr. Luke! Campers will learn the basics of guitar, bass, drums, keyboard and vocals. We will explore classical, folk, and classic rock music while developing teamwork, dexterity, musical ability, and jamming potential. Maximum 10

VIDEO GAME DEVELOPMENT with Mitchum Dillard $275

In Video Game Development, campers will step into the shoes of a videogame designer. From a tilt-table ball maze to an asteroid dodging flight through space, campers will learn how to design their own games using the Unity Game Engine. Step into a world of coding and creation to make your own games a reality. Maximum 15

CREATIVE WRITING-POETRY with Luke Shepard $220

Campers will learn about haikus and sonnets and explore classics of poetry to help create their own work of writing. Experiences with art, music, and nature will all translate into poetry. Put your own words to feelings and utilize creative thinking while surprising your loved ones with sonnets at the end of the week! Maximum 10

MODS FOR MINECRAFT with Mitchum Dillard $220

Campers will get a quick look into the world of computer programming. Using Java Programming, campers will use their imaginations to design and add new things to their gaming favorite, like food and armament. An introduction to Java coding, followed by learning how to design and implement code, will leave campers with a new understanding of what goes on behind the scenes of their favorite games. Campers will design their own mods by the end of the week. Maximum 15

WEEK 5 JULY 2-6 (NO CAMP WEDNESDAY)

3D ART SCULPTURE with Katie Terry $275

Get ready for fabulous 3D in this engaging art camp! We will create amazing 3D creations out of art supplies, recycled materials, and more. Learn all about sculpture with us as we investigate innovative ways to make three- dimensional art. Maximum 15

YE OLDE MEDIEVAL CAMP with Jordan Garrett and Will Playford $350

Participants will be transported back in time to a world of knights and ladies, jousting and dragons. Students will get a hands-on learning experience of what life was like in the tales of King Arthur and his round table. Become immersed in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Medieval Court. All one needs is a chivalric heart! Maximum 20

DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS with Daniel Snyder (6th-8th Grade Only) $275

Prepare for adventure! Developed in the 1970s, Dungeons and Dragons is the most famous tabletop roleplaying game of all time and pioneered an entire genre of gaming. Players assume the role of a hero in a fantasy world where they use might, magic, and their wits to solve puzzles and defeat monsters. Campers will work as a team using creativity and critical thinking to overcome various challenges. No prior tabletop or roleplaying experience is required. Maximum 5

OUTDOORSY CAMP with Melissa Mitchell and Danielle Holby $350

Come ready to explore the outdoors while swimming and hiking! During this camp we will be traveling to various water parks in NWA, including Rogers Aquatic Center and Springdale Aquatic Center. Students will spend the morning hiking and swimming in local water holes. There might even be an occasional cliff jumping for those daring enough to try. If you enjoy the sun, water and being outside, this camp is for you. Lunch is provided and a signed waiver is required for this camp. Maximum 13

Campers will explore different art types with yarn and fabric. Whether it is knitting, weaving, screen printing or sewing, we are going to cover the basics of what it means to be a fibers artist. FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE CAMP with Jordan Garrett and Will Playford $350

This camp is designed to be an introduction to French language and Francophone Culture. Participants will develop listening, speaking, writing and reading comprehension skills that will lay a foundation for further French studies. Through various activities students will spend the week immersing themselves in all things French! La Vie Est Belle! Maximum 15

BOARD GAMES with Luke Shepard $275

Turn off your devices, it’s time for board games! This camp will roll through classic games and introduce new ones. Campers will also design and create their own games. Practice strategy, employ your luck, and put your creativity into play! Maximum 20

SEWING AND QUILTING with Samanthe Burrow $275

One of the older forms of fabric arts, quilting has been passed down through the generations and remains a mainstay in today’s society. This camp will focus on the basic technique needed to make a quilt from scratch. Campers will learn machine sewing, fabric piecing, and quilting stitches. Using pre-cut pieces and working from a chosen quilt pattern, campers will construct a quilt that they can take home at the end of the week. Maximum 15

MOLLIE WRIGHTCAMP DIRECTOR

Mollie Wright has been employed at TNS for almost 4 years. She has spent time in the classroom with toddlers, as well as Pre-K students. She has a degree in Early Childhood Education. Mollie loves to be doing anything active, spending time with her husband and son, and can’t wait to welcome their daughter arriving the end of the summer! Mollie has years of experience in the camp setting and is excited for this summer at TNS!

CARTER FRANKLIN was born and raised here in Fayetteville and is currently a college student at the University of Arkansas. He grew up playing sports and has enjoyed competition his entire life.

CHESS WIZARDS has been teaching the game of chess since 2002. All our instructors have more than 10 years of teaching experience. Our interactive curriculum makes learning fun for new and seasoned players alike. Our camps are led by our most experienced instructors and provide our students with memorable camp experience challenging their minds. Chess Wizards has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, Chicago Reader, Pioneer Press, North Shore Magazine, and WGN.

CHEYENNE AUTRY is an MFA candidate at the University of Arkansas’ Program in Creative Writing and Translation. She has served as Development Director and Assistant Fiction Editor for The Arkansas International and has attended workshops with Tin House and The Kenyon Review. Her work has been published in Tin House Online, The Doctor T.J. Eckleburg Review, SmokeLong Quarterly, and elsewhere. Cheyenne has also been a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Arkansas for four years where she’s taught a variety of English courses, including Creative Writing I and II.

DANIEL SNYDER is a nerd and proud of it. Starting his fifth year with The New School, he is excited to share his passion for tabletop gaming with anybody who has a flair for the imagination and willingness to learn. Daniel holds a BA in History and Classical Studies from the University of Arkansas and enjoys reading, video games and practicing his Latin, in addition to tabletop gaming.

DANIELLE HOLBY is a fifth and sixth grade teacher at The New School. She has a degree in Middle Level Education with a focus in language arts and social studies. This is her first year teaching since she graduated from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville in May of 2017. Danielle has spent most of her life in Arkansas and enjoys spending her free time doing outdoor activities such as hiking and kayaking. She looks forward to sharing her love for outdoor adventures with others and having fun this summer!

HALEE SMITH received her BA in Psychology and Family Sciences from the University of Arkansas last summer and is now pursuing a MS in School Counseling. She has worked at The New School since August of 2013 and has played many roles. She’s usually seen working in the extended day program and with the summer camps, but you also may have seen her at the front desk, as a substitute, or coaching basketball. When she’s not at The New School, Halee enjoys painting, crafting and watching Netflix with her cat.

JADDY CIUCCI is an actor and teaching artist currently based in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She has taught everyone from toddlers to individuals receiving their doctorate through the medium of theatre and performs in everything from children’s theatre to musicals to Shakespeare. Since moving to Arkansas, Jaddy has been working with Trike Theatre for Youth, both performing and teaching. She studied Acting and Music at Indiana University in Bloomington.

JAKE LEWIS is going into his final year at the University of Arkansas as a Theatre major. Jake is a lifelong participant in the arts, with an emphasis in comedy. Jake has placed 1st in State Improv in the 2014 Forensic/Speech Debate Tournament of Champions and also has done extensive work as an actor for The Classical Edge and The Crude Mechanicals, two highly revered local Shakespeare groups. Jake is looking forward to teaching different aspects of Theatre this summer!

JORDAN GARRETT is the current upper school French Teacher and Swim Coach at The New School. Her undergrad is in European history and French with an emphasis on Medieval History, and she is currently finishing her Master’s degree in French at the University of Arkansas.

In addition to her role as Director of Activities and Extended Day at The New School, Jonny also teaches 6th-8th grade drama and helps direct plays throughout the year. She received her MFA in Acting from the University of Texas at Austin and lived in New York City for 16 years before joining the Fayetteville community with her husband Mr. Troy and their 13 year old son Huck. Around town she’s acted and taught for TheatreSquared, Arts Live Theatre, Classical Edge, and Trike Theatre, and she was most recently seen as Charlotte in “Charlotte’s Web” at the Walton Arts Center.

KATIE TERRY loves art. A painter, a landscape designer and a mother of two New School students, she has taught private lessons, camps and classes to students of all ages. She is a long-time Girl Scout leader who enjoys drawing, painting, designing, cooking, singing and playing. While currently finishing her art education licensure from the University of Arkansas School of Art, she also holds a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from this local institution, as well as a Bachelor of Fine Art from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston.

KAYLEE SMITH is currently a sophomore at the University of Arkansas and is majoring in Elementary Education. She has been dancing since elementary school and has competed all over the country.

LOGAN DAVIS is a student at the University of Arkansas getting a degree in Business and Social Work. She has been working at The New School for three years as a volleyball, track, and basketball coach.

LUKE SHEPARD has worked at the New School for two years. He has a Master’s degree in English from the University of Arkansas. When he’s not at work, he enjoys reading, writing, playing the guitar, and hanging out

with his three children.

LUZ DELPILAR has been at TNS for five years teaching piano and as part of the staff during the Summer Program. This summer she will be leading the Kindergarten Camp. She loves getting to know each student that attends the camp and loves having the chance to experience fun and explore with them each day.

MELISSA MITCHELL is a second grade teacher at The New School. She has a degree in Elementary Education with a Masters in Gifted Education. This is her sixth year teaching and second year in 2nd grade! Her husband, Jason, is also employed at The New School and teaches 5th grade. She spends most of her spare time playing and being a mom to her twin two year old daughters, Cora and Harper. Melissa grew up competitively swimming since the age of six and is excited to spend part of her summer with others who enjoy swimming!

MITCHUM DILLARD is a Computer Science Major at the University of Arkansas about to begin his Master’s courses in Education. He has a passion for robotics and problem solving. He has spent the last few years teaching programming and robotics in summer camps and after-school programs. In his spare time he likes to design and play video games, and he almost always has a book to read close at hand.

PAIGE QUINN is a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Arkansas where she is pursuing her Masters of Music Education. Paige teaches and mentors undergraduate students while working on research and publications in music. Paige has taught in Washington, D.C. and most recently at The New School. In addition to offering private lessons in ukulele, Paige participates in the University of Arkansas Wind Ensemble on the French horn. She enjoys playing music, being

outdoors, cooking, and traveling. She is excited to ignite a love of learning about the outdoors this summer at The New School summer camp.

PAYTON BROWN is a student at the University of Arkansas studying elementary education. She hopes to move onto a Masters program after graduation, specializing with an endorsement of English as a Second Language. Payton is originally from Flower Mound, Texas, just outside of Dallas. She is on the University of Arkansas’s Cross Country and Track team, and has been running since she was in the 3rd grade. She plans to move back to Texas

after graduation to teach in Dallas.

SAMANTHE BURROW is a native Arkansan and has recently returned home from an eight year stint in New York City working professionally in the world of theatrical costume design. She worked on numerous Broadway shows and was the costume shop manager at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. Sam worked at a Broadway costume shop on shows such as Wicked, Hairspray, Shrek, Mamma Mia, In the Heights, and many more. She was a also a dresser backstage on Matilda, Newsies, and In the Heights, among others. Since returning to Arkansas in 2015, she has worked with many local theatre organizations such as TheatreSquared, Trike Theatre, Arts Live Theatre, and with the University of Arkansas Theatre Department. Currently she works at The New School as the Theatre Production Director.

SCOTT RUSSELL is an Associate Instructor with Dueling Arts International and an advanced actor/combatant with certifications from the world’s six leading organizations in stage combat. He is also a professional actor. He loves using stage combat to learn about partnership, trust, and confidence building among adults and youth alike.

SHELBY WILLIAMS is a New School alumni who majored in Fibers at the Savannah College of Art and Design. She loves to make art whether it’s drawing, sewing, or refurbishing old furniture. She’s happiest getting her hands dirty making something. Shelby teaches middle school Technology at The New School.

TAYLOR CASH is a native Fayetteville resident and current college student at the University of Arkansas. He will be a junior in the fall and is currently working on both a History Degree and an English Degree. As someone who grew up playing sports and specifically basketball in high school, he loves sports and being active outside.

WILLIAM PLAYFORD is a graduate from the University of Arkansas with a BA in three different studies: French, International Relations, and European Studies. Alongside these degrees, he has also earned an MA in French. He has worked as an instructor at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville for two years teaching both Elementary I and II French. Will also spent a semester in Grenoble, France and received a Diploma of Completion from the University of Stendhal.

PROGRAM POLICIESIn order to maintain student/staff ratios and ensure the quality of our summer program, the following policies apply:

BILLING & PAYMENTUpon registration, a non-refundable $50 registration fee and a deposit equal to 25% of all camp fees is due. Balance for all June camps must be paid in full by June 1st, and all July camps must be paid in full by July 1st. No camper will be allowed to attend any session until full payment is received. We accept credit cards with a 3% convenience fee and personal checks. All registration and payment is online. Each camp has a maximum number of campers allowed and registration will close once it is full. There will be wait lists for camps who meet their maximums. Registration officially closes at noon on the Thursday before each camp.

CANCELLATIONCamp tuition is refundable up until two weeks prior to the start of each camp. Email our camp director at [email protected] to cancel or make changes. A $25 cancellation fee will be charged.

LATE PICKUPThe New School closes at 5:30pm. Please make every effort to pick up your camper by that time. A minimum late fee of $15 will be charged per family whose child or children are not picked up by 5:30. After 5:45, $1 per minute will be charged.

CONDUCTIn order to maintain a pleasant atmosphere and an environment conducive to learning, we need campers to cooperate with school policies and disciplinary rules of conduct. Teachers will present these policies and classroom rules to the campers on the first day of each camp. Logical consequences for inappropriate or uncooperative behavior will be used to help campers learn to comply with classroom and school rules. Parents and campers are required to adhere to our discipline policy to take part in our summer program. Unacceptable conduct by a camper may result in dismissal.

PROGRAM CHANGESThe New School may cancel any camp that does not have an acceptable level of enrollment. Notification of cancellations will be made as early as possible with full refunds given. Every effort will be made to make room for your child in another camp.
