You can programme thehydraulic remotes to extend,retract, float or cancel; raise the 3-point hitch; shift up, shift down or resume the AutomaticPowerShift transmission. If you do any type of hitch work, especially deep tillage, you’ll want to check out a 9020 Series tractor with optional 3-point hitch. It’s fast,smooth and accurate. Nobody offers, or even comes close to the response rate, load sensing and position control that John Deere hasdeveloped. Our system will help keep you moving at a steady pace without tedious hitch adjustments and corrections.

Smooth PTO and high capacity hitchadd value and versatility

A category III, 3-point hitch provides up to8350kg lift capacity for most implements.For the largest implements a Category IVhitch with over 9200 kg lift capacity isavailable.

The heavy duty drawbar can be posi-tioned in the centre, to the left or right toaccommodate various implementrequirements. It can also be lengthened toa desired position.

Increase the usefulness of your highhorsepower machines. Equip your 9020Series 4 wheel drive with an optional 13/4 inch 1000 rpm fully independent PTO.It can be factory or field installed.

To engage or disengage the PTO, justmove a lever. You get smooth PTOstartups that can handle large, heavyloads. The PTO lever is colour-coded forquick identification and is convenientlylocated on the side control console, withineasy reach.

You can add a wide variety ofattachments to a 9020 Seriestractor to increase its usefulness.For example we’ve highlighted the3-point hitch and PTO on thesetwo pages.

The PTO is modulated forsmooth engagements, with plentyof power to handle high loadconditions and to start high inertiaequipment. Uniform starts andstops help avoid any shocks toyour implement. And thanks to ourtremendous engine Extra Powercapabilities, PTO operations areextra productive.

The John Deere hitch is alsovery productive. Advanced loadand depth control helps keep youon the move. The fast acting hitchresponds instantly to changingconditions, making hitch adjust-ments smooth, quick and unno-ticeable.

HITCH AND PTO

Combination type oil filter provides full flowand bypass filtration. It traps both large andsmall contaminants in a single unit.

Our cross flow cylinder head (right) features four valves per cylinder. The ports arearranged in a canted design to increase air flow in and out of the cylinders. With the additional airflow, camshaft timing can be optimised to utilise more of the expansion stroke. The result is improvedtorque and economy. Notice that the exhaust valves are the same size as the intake valves to improveexhaust scavenging.

The large, high capacity turbocharger is efficient, providingexcellent response and air transfer. This, in conjunc-tion with the air-to-air aftercooler, promotes greaterfuel economy.

Unit injectors (near left) are electronicallycontrolled for precise timing and injec-tion. Each is essentially its own highpressure fuel pump delivering up to22,500 psi. Unit injectors eliminatepressure bursts, reduce time delays andcompletely control atomisation andinjection. This increases fuel efficiency andpromotes cleaner combustion.

Directed top liner cooling reduces liner temperatures by55 degrees C. This feature reduces oil consumption,emissions and improves cylinder durability.

The full flow oil cooler is designed directly into thecast block, minimising the chance of leak pointsand increasing reliability. The plate-type coolerelement is immersed in high velocity coolant forefficient heat transfer.

All three models, the 375 hp9320, 425 hp 9420 and 450 hp9520 tractors feature our 12.5 lPOWERTECH engines. Theseincredible powerplants produce upto 7 percent extra power (aboverated engine power) plus as muchas 38 percent torque rise.

This is the kind of strength youneed to pull deep-digging, extra-wide implements in high draftsoils. And thanks to our unitinjection fuel system and 4 valvesper cylinder, these high torqueengines maintain excellent fuelefficiency while meeting current airquality standards. And the cam-in-head design and internal routing offluids create a trim, athletic profile.These remarkable engines areeasy to service – there are fewerleak points and they’re built to last.

The gear driven, integrated oil pump is designed into the frontgeartrain. It operates at 1800 rpm (engine speed at 2100 rpm).

Slower operating speed, fewer parts and greater flow helpensure long pump life and smooth engine operation.

A large damper improves torsionalcontrol to maintain crankshaft reliability.It drives a strong, 12-rib poly-v drivebelt, with automatic tensioner, to operatethe fan.

A large, heavy duty deep sump oil pan features a 42 litrecapacity. The steel intake tube is strategically positionednear the deepest part of the sump to ensure proper enginelube during off-level operation.

The gear driven water pump operates independently of thefan drive and is rated at 65 percent efficiency (industryaverage is 45 percent efficiency).

Long life rocker arms with rollers ride directly on theinduction hardened camshaft lobes to give smoothoperation. The heavy camshaft and large size rocker armsand rocker arm rollers help minimise unit loading.

Highly efficient new front geartrain features only fiveactive gears. The large size gears add capacity; the highcontact gear ratios reduce stress and loading.

The two piece articulated piston in 12.5 lengine (above) features a forged alloy steelcrown to better withstand higher tempera-tures. The sound mechanical and thermalstrength also helps reduce fatigue. And castcopper/lead steel backed bushings in thecrown provide twice the wear resistance ofconventional aluminium pistons and providehigh load carrying capability. You get lessheat transfer and closer tolerances betweenthe piston and the liner. The turned skirtdesign and spray jets also provide bettercooling, oil control and lubrication.

It’s what’s insidethat counts the most.As you can see, there arefew moving parts. The cam-in-head design eliminates push rodsand lifters; delivers precise control ofvalve operation; and extends the one-timevalve lash interval to 2500 hours.

A special alloy material for cylinder liners that’sstronger than common gray iron and less brittlethan induction hardened liners, provides a strongerliner flange.

High performance engine power, torquereserve and fuel efficiency. That’s what youget with these tractors. And as fieldconditions change, torque and powerrespond accordingly. Thanks to ouradvanced, electronically controlled unit-injection system, John Deere engineersshaped the torque curve to produce up to38 percent torque rise and maintain thislevel of high torque performance to as lowas 900 rpm. So, as the load increases, theseengines develop a real “grip” to keep yougoing. At the same time, we optimised fuel delivery to ensure peak operatingcharacteristics and practical fuel economy.

RECOMMENDED TYRE SIZES

We generally recommend ballasting to 48 kg per horsepower. For drawbarimplements, it’s essential that the tractoris balanced so that no more than 50 to 55 percent of weight is up front. Formounted implements, put 55 to 60 per-cent up front.

Whenever possible, use only cast ballast.A Quik-Tatch weight rack can be locatedbetween the fenders.

Massive single tyres and a large selectionof dual wheel options provide applicationflexibility and meet all requirements fortransport ability and power transfer.

You can never have too much tyre on your tractor. Larger tyres let you operate at lowerinflation pressure and still carry the axle load. This 9020 is equipped with 800/70 R38tyres. For other recommended tyre selections, see the chart below.

Turning power into progress

The reliable, annular brake pistonprovides more uniform contact than a 3 piston system. These beefy, high energywet disc brakes use cooled and filtered oil tomaintain long lasting performance.

Electro hydraulic differential lock uses a 3-pinion design. This 3 point geometry addstremendous strength and allows the three piniongears to carry the load more evenly. Onceengaged, the pinions cannot turn, transmitting alltorque through the shafts.

The robust differen-tial driveshaft is heat

treated and inductionhardened for extra strength

and durability. The high capacitytapered roller bearings provide

smooth performance and longlife. The driveshaft is sized tohandle stress and hightorque loads. All gear sets

and components are welllubricated throughout the axle.

Differential lock wet clutch on 9020 Seriestractors feature large discs and plates to give thedifferential lock greater ability to transmit torqueto the side that needs it more. Oil cooling ensuresyears of dependable service.

Inboard planetaries spread the axle loadsover three points to increase strength anddurability. The strong, steel ring gear forms atight seal between the axle housing anddifferential case. The high capacity planetgears, ring gear, and shaft splines meshperfectly for smooth, reliable transfer ofpower.

The bar type axles feature a machined rack which, in conjunctionwith a special pinion gear tool attachment, lets you adjust wheeltreads easily.

Heavy duty, multiple lip, unitised outer sealeliminates two service points on each axle. It’sspecially designed to keep oil in and contaminantsout. High load tapered roller bearings are oil cooled toprevent heat buildup.

Hydraulically actuated wet disc brakesensure positive stopping and long,

dependable service. Brakes are self-adjusting and cooled with filtered oil.

RUGGED FINAL DRIVES AND AXLES

John Deere final drives are built toflow power smoothly from thetransmission to the ground.They’re also built to last.

The strong differential drive-shaft routes the high torque powerto the spiral bevel gear set whichsets the axles into motion. Inboardplanetary gears spread the powerloads evenly over three points toreduce stress and ensure uniformloading on the axles. The largediameter, heavy duty axles andgears are built to handle thetremendous power associated withdeep tillage, wide implements anddifficult field conditions. Plus,they’re designed to handle the newhigh levels of power you’d expectfrom a new world leader.

The engine oil dipstick is located on theleft side of the tractor. It’s simple to checkand read.

Using our extremely efficient ServiceADVISOR computerised diagnostic pro-gramme, your John Deere servicetechnician can quickly diagnoseproblems and get fast, on-the-spotsolutions. A special Service ADVISORoutlet inside the cab provides easyaccess to the tractor operating system.

The cab air filter on the 9020 Seriestractors can be accessed from groundlevel. The cab air filter slides easily out ofits canister for cleaning or replacement.The canister seals tightly to keep dustfrom entering the system.

Hinge pins are easy to reach and grease.
