What exercise seems invisible, but has noticeable benefits? Reading, of course!

A workout for the brain and eyes, reading has also been said to improve concentration and memory. Skills – such as writing, language usage, and vocabulary selection- are sharpened by just reading a good book. Mental and spiritual health can be revitalized by reading, or being read to.

When reading, our eyes move across a page and signal the brain. The brain kicks into gear translating letters and symbols into

language and meaning. The memory part of the brain absorbs new information. Thus, our brains are nourished and exercised.

In fact, reading can be therapeutic. It’s called bibliotherapy.

Bibliotherapy is when readers interact with books to help solve problems and heal. By reading books and other materials, individuals can better understand mental and physical diseases, as well as explore spiritual concerns. Readers may find ways to cope with personal problems, such as grief.

Beyond self-help books, readers may find characters dealing with similar life situations in fictional books. Readers can also learn about life’s ups and downs. They can gain perspective on the aging process and may better understand problems that arose during this stage of their lives. They

can develop coping skills to deal with physical, social, and emotional changes and can research ways to leave a legacy.

Providence Park will be having it’s very own “Margarita & Salsa” festival on Friday, October 19th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. It will be held on the Portico out front of the Village and St. Elizabeth Place. Family members have been invited to attend as well. Music will be provided by the band Branded Heart for everyone to just listen to or dance to. There will be plenty of Margaritas of course, and beer, soda and water for everyone to enjoy. Dona and her staff will have plenty

“Now loading” for all points east and southeast. The van will be leaving at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 29th for a grand tour of “the country.” We will be traveling to exotic places like Mart, Riesel, Marlin, and Chilton. I think just about every resident in the Village and St. Elizabeth Place has some connection to this area either past or present. There has to be a place in that area where we can stop and have an ice cream or soda, so bring a little cash with you, just in case. Also, the cost of the trip will be one “green dollar” that you get when you go to different activities offered at “The Park.” Come on down and join in this great adventure and enjoy the countryside. You just might like it!

It’s Margarita & Salsa Time!

Bunco at Providence ParkThe St. Elizabeth balcony will be abuzz on Tuesday, October 30th around 2 p.m. We will be having our first Bunco Party here at Providence Park hosted by Janet McAdoo (the Dobbs’ daughter) and your very own activity director. If you haven’t played Bunco before, I understand it can be a very fun and exciting game. It does not however require a great deal of “brain power” from what I am told. There will be prizes

given for various degrees of winning such as highest point winner, lowest point winner, most Baby Bunco’s and most Big Bunco’s. You will not be playing with the same person every time though -- the losers have to move to another table at the end of each round, so be prepared to have different partners. Refreshments will also be served. So, grab a friend and come on down to have some fun……

of Chips, Salsa, Queso, Guacamole and Taquitos at each table as well. You may want to visit with the family members that will be coming to the party and remind them that we are only serving chips and dips at this party.

Your regular evening meal will be served in your dining rooms from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. only that afternoon consisting of Soup and Sandwiches since we will be preparing for the Festival.

Anybody for “42”?

There are two types of people in Texas. Those who play 42 and those who need to learn. Just in case you are in the second category, you need to take a look at Winning 42: Strategy and Lore of the National Game of Texas by Dennis Roberson. The book is not only useful for beginners, but it also provides detailed information designed to enhance the skill of veteran players.

The game 42 had its beginning in 1887 in the small Texas town of Trappe Springs (now called Garner). To appreciate the story, one has to take a note of the moral climate of the largely Baptist community that included the sinfulness of card playing. After being disciplined for engaging in a card game in the family hayloft, two young boys conceived the idea of creating a domino game using ideas gleaned from card games.

According to Roberson, “They didn’t seek to rewrite the Baptist bylaws; they simply exploited a loophole instead. If dominoes weren’t sinful, why not play cards with dominoes? The irony of the invention was that it could be played on any day and even at church socials without sinning. The boys introduced the idea to their families and friends who spread the new game wherever they went.

Although 42 is now played nationwide and among military personnel overseas, it remains, first of all, a Texas game.

Tammy will be providing the entertainment for this event, and everyone knows how good they are. We usually have a lot of fun at this party, so tell your friends to come and join in.

Welcome to Providence Park

Maybell comes to us from Indianapolis, Indiana where she was living in a private care home and said she was getting the “best of care.” Maybell was married to Otha Preston Key for a “lot of years” and they had five beautiful children together -- three of which are no longer living.

Her remaining son wanted her to move to Waco to be closer to him so he could take care of her. She also has a daughter who lives in North Carolina and comes to visit once or twice a year.

She retired from Sears & Roebuck after 30 years of service.

Maybell enjoys crocheting and has many pretty items in her room to prove it. She says she is very satisfied here at Providence Park. Please welcome Maybell to the family.

Farmhouse Open in Mexia We will be traveling to Mexia on Friday, October 12th to the new Farmhouse Restaurant for lunch. We have been to this restaurant in the past, but they now have a brand new location. The buffet style food has always been great in the past. We will be leaving at 10:15 a.m. in order to beat the lunch bunch crowd. Grab a friend and try it out with us.

Also on Friday, October 26th we will be going to Hewitt to try out Cantina Texas. They have a two page menu in the new phone books and it also looks good.
