VICTORIA’S job queues are likely to become increasingly populated by male, ex-manufacturing and construction workers after a clearer picture of the state’s newly unemployed emerged last week.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics jobless figures, released revealed Victorian men, who are more traditionally employed in those industries, were more likely to be out of work than women. And in a further indication of the weakening pulse in Victoria’s manufacturing heart, the state’s unemployment rate has jumped to its highest level since March.

Almost 5000 people joined the job queue last month. Victoria’s jobless rate rose to 5.6 per cent in August, up from 5.4 per cent a month earlier. Among men, the rate was 5.7 per cent, up from 4.8 per cent a year ago.

For women, who more commonly find full-time work in professional services, health and education, unemployment was down slightly from 5.6 per cent a year ago to 5.4 per cent. In stark contrast, the national unemployment rate fell to a three-month low of 5.1 per cent, down from 5.2 per cent in July. News on the jobless front was also brighter for our northern cousins. NSW’s jobless rate fell below 5 per cent and it was stable at 3.9 per cent in mining powerhouse Western Australia.

SINGLE men in their 40’s are at the highest risk of going bankrupt, according to a new report. The Insolvency and Trustee Service Australia (ITSA) report says the most common age for declaring insolvency is 40 to 44 years, with the majority of declarations by single men.

“The age of bankrupts has consistently increased since 2003, with the proportion of bankrupts aged 18 to 39 declining and those aged 40 and over increasing,” the report said. Released every two years, it said there were 23,125 bankrupts in 2011, of whom 57 per

cent were men, with 40 per cent of those single and 29 per cent in their 40’s.

The main drivers of personal bankruptcy were loss of work or income or excessive use of credit facilities, while business-related bankruptcies were mostly down to economic conditions. Around 48 per cent of bankrupts earned more than $30,000, and 80 per cent of personal insolvency debtors earned at least that amount.

The report said 27 per cent of bankrupts owed at least $100,000, while 69 per cent of personal insolvency debtors owed at least that amount. Banks were owed

the biggest share of unsecured debt - 41 per cent in the case of bankrupts, 58 per cent for debt agreement debtors and 25 per cent for personal insolvency debtors.

Credit cards accounted for 21 per cent of bankrupts’ unsecured debt, 18 per cent of personal insolvency agreement debt and a record 58 per cent of debt agreement debt. A debt agreement assists debtors with unmanageable debt, while an insolvency agreement is a fl exible way for a debtor to come to an agreement with creditors without going bankrupt. The most common age for debt agreement debtors is 25 to 29 years.

VICTORIA’S new number plates may have hit a road block before they have even hit the road.

The Baillieu Government is investigating claims that the domain name for its new road safety slogan is already in use.

The Government unveiled its long-awaited new motto for registration plates - “stay alert, stay alive – at a

regional sitting of State Parliament at Ballarat.

But an anonymous caller to radio station 3AW’s rumour fi le claimed he had acquired the domain name after Premier Ted Baillieu announce the motto.

Government spokesman Paul Price said it would investigate the claim but would not be distracted from its road safety push. ”It was

never meant to be on the internet, it was purely to put on number plates,’’ he said. The website www.stayalertstayalive.com.au today pokes fun at the government for not registering the domain name.

The Government announced it would change Victoria’s number plate motto in December last year. The new slogan is expected to start appearing on plates from early next year.

The US presidential candidates are criss-crossing America as another poll shows Barack Obama pulling ahead of Mitt Romney.

A Reuters poll shows Mr Obama has a four-point advantage over Mr Romney, eight weeks before the election. The poll comes on the back of a weekend Gallup poll which also showed Mr Obama, who took centre stage at the Democratic Party national convention last week, pulling ahead by four percentage points. For weeks, most polls have shown Mr Obama and Mr Romney in a dead heat.

The president’s lead comes despite last week’s disappointing jobs fi gures, which showed unemployment continuing to hover above 8 per cent.Mr Romney says Americans should be disappointed with

the president’s handling of the economy. “It is not at all what a recovery is supposed to look like. It is really not the kind of recovery people had expected,” he said.

“Normally when things go down as deeply as they did they come rebounding, but it has now been how many months? Forty-three months with unemployment above 8 per cent.” But Mr Obama told a campaign rally in Florida that he was the man to pull America out of the worst fi nancial crisis since the Great Depression. “It’s going to take more than a few years to deal with problems that have been building up for decades. But, let me tell you something, when our opponent goes around saying that the nation’s in decline, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” he said.

Krystal White, 28, may only be half Greek, but you’d never know. Her thoughts, inspiration and love of life come from her Greek heritage. Born in America to a Greek mother from Macedonia and an American father, she grew up in Greece. There, she attended the American Community School of Athens in Halandri. Being Greek inspired her love of art, which developed into a love of translating that art into fi lm.

She returned to Los Angeles alone, to realize her dream of making fi lms. “I’m here by myself. I came back to pursue my career. Unfortunately, Greece doesn’t offer quite as many opportunities for that right now,” she said. Krystal has previously worked in wardrobe. Her fi rst job was as a wardrobe intern on the fi lm, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX. “From that moment, I was hooked. Being on a set was everything I hoped it would be. It was magical,” Krystal told The Greek Star.

Next she worked as a wardrobe trainee on the fi lm, MAMMA MIA!, set on the Greek islands of Skopelos and Skiathos. “The crew was predominantly English and I was one of the youngest. They’d been in the business for years. They said it was the best project they ever had, because we were on these magnifi cent islands.”

Acting and making fi lms are what Krystal really wants to do. “I

loved costumes, but I wanted to try as many different aspects of fi lmmaking that I could. It helps to be familiar with other departments of the movie making process as well. It’s most fulfi lling when you can get your hands on more than one part of the fi lm,” she added.

About six months ago, she approached Louis Mandylor, best known as an actor in the fi lm, MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, to work on a short fi lm together. “He’s actually an award-winning director. Together, we came up with the concept of PERSEPHONE, and things began to blossom,” she said.

Based on her thoughts and heritage, and ignited by a love of Greek mythology, PERSEPHONE, began to come to life. “Then we found a scriptwriter, who learned enough about me and what I was trying to achieve, to create an incredible script.” It will soon be made into a short fi lm.

PERSEPHONE is a love story about a dancer and her piano player “It’s a forbidden love story. Something happened and PERSEPHONE and Jack are no longer living in the same realm. When love is true, then you can cross any boundary to fi nd each other,” the fi lmmaker mused.

Last week, Krystal and Louis shared the script with his fellow GREEK WEDDING alumna, actress Lainie Kazan. “She loved it. She called us right away to tell us she was on board,” Krystal shared. “This is a short fi lm, and in Hollywood, you can’t approach production

companies, because it’s not a real investment for them. You have to love it so much that you make it anyway you can. Either you use your own money or get donations and pursue crowd funding.”

With crowd funding, there is a time limit. By September 15, they hope to raise $15,000 to produce the fi lm. Originally, the goal was $25,000, but big-name support continues to come in for PERSEPHONE. "We've gotten hooked up with a professional studio that has its own buildable sets, trailers, lights, facilities, etc. This knocks $10,000 off our production costs," Krystal shared excitedly. “We’ll have a big crew. This is my fi rst project, but it’s not a student fi lm. We have award-winning actors and director on board. It’s surreal to get some really great and notable people attached to it, and so quickly. When it’s completed, we’ll submit this to short fi lm festivals and go from there.

We would love to have everyone’s support.”

With the opening of this year’s Thessaloniki International Fair, the decline of the city’s commercial centre is more than apparent as three in 10 enterprises have shut down.

Popular streets such as Aghias Sofias have seen a succession of closures, at a rate, on this particular stretch, of 34.2 percent, according to data released by the National Confederation of Greek Commerce (ESEE). Even on the city’s most popular shopping strip, Tsimiski Street, the closure rate has increased by 33 percent in the last six months, to 20.4 percent. Commercial property owners have resorted to reducing lease rates dramatically or to splitting their properties in two or even three so as to secure tenants.

The prospect of enhanced tourism cooperation between Greece and Turkey was the focus of a meeting between Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni and a delegation representing the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB) along with officials of its Greek equivalent, the Hellenic Association of Travel and Tourist Agencies (HATTA), that took place on September 5.

The Turkish side noted that easier access to Schengen visas for several Greek islands -a successful pilot programme instituted by Greece this summer- has substantially boosted tourist arrivals from the neighbouring country. According to TÜRSAB President Başaran Ulusoy, an estimated 11 million Turkish tourists holiday inside and outside Turkey every year, 500,000 of which vacation in Greece.

Meanwhile, according to provisional data, published by the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE), tourist arrivals at Greek airports, in the period January-August 2012, showed a slight decrease (3.11%) compared to the same period in 2011.

Paeania Cave, located on the eastern side of Mount Hymettus, is a unique tourist attraction in Attica. The cave, also known as Koutouki Cave, is as old as 2 million years, and located at 510 meters above sea level. It comprises a precipice sinking 38 meters into the ground with ascending and descending corridors extending for 350 meters.

Its huge central chamber is richly decorated with stalagmites, stalactites, and pillars, creating an imposing image. The cave was accidentally discovered in 1928 and then a tunnel was dug into the rock to allow access.

For trekkers, the cave can be reached on foot -an about two-and-a-half hours journey from the Monastery of Kaisariani, on the western side of Mt Hymettus- an experience that won’t let anyone down!

The 77th Thessaloniki International Fair (TIF) opens its doors to the public tomorrow at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition Centre, running until September 16. Regional business development and the outward orientation Greek enterprises are at the heart of this year’s event.

The 77th TIF is promoting the country’s Regional Authorities and Chambers of Commerce and Industry, which will present opportunities for business development and innovation in an effort to increase their competitiveness on both national and international levels. Chambers member-companies will contribute to this goal through their dynamic presence.

The fair’s thematic sections include alternative forms of energy, heating, cooling, and building materials, home and office furnishing, farm products and motor vehicles. Western Macedonia is this year’s honoured region, with a special pavilion dedicated to the area’s achievements in the fields of entrepreneurship, innovation, industry, tourism etc.

Parallel events include an exhibition on new electronic games for the 2012-2013 season and e-gaming, as well as daily concerts by contemporary Greek bands and ensembles. Greek News Agenda: Special Issue-Thessaloniki One Heart, Many Civilizations & Life in the City: Many Stories, one Heart...!

Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos participated in a four-member mission of EU Foreign Ministers to Cairo, Egypt yesterday. The mission also included ministers Giulio Terzi, Erato Kozakou-Markoullis and Tonio Borg of Italy, Cyprus and Malta respectively, who went to Egypt to convey a message of the European Union’s solidarity with and support for the transition process under way in the country.

The representatives of the four Mediterranean EU countries met with the President of the Republic of Egypt, Mohamed Morsy, Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamal Amr, and the Secretary General of the Arab League, Nabil El-Araby, with whom they discussed international issues of interest to Europe and the Middle East.

According to a Foreign Ministry announcement, Avramopoulos stressed the importance of Egypt’s role in the stability of the wider region and confirmed the four countries’ “support, in order for [Egypt] to proceed with all these deep democratic reforms”. Later, the FM departed for Pafos, Cyprus, to attend an Informal Meeting of European Foreign Affairs Ministers (GYMNICH), taking place on September 7-8.

Greece’s Parliament, according to the last available figures, employs some 1,700 people, or the equivalent of the population of Koroni, a picturesque seaside town in the southwestern Peloponnese. And, like the seaside town, where, according to an old Greek adage dating to the Ottoman occupation, there is always a kindly uncle to get you into a cushy job, it appears there are 300 uncles and aunts (read MPs) in Parliament willing to help out one of their own.

Of the 1,700 people listed as being employed in Parliament, 670 are

so-called “regular” employees, 541 are “private individuals,” or contract workers, just under 100 are labelled “specially appointed staff,” and 360 are police officers. In comparison to the pre-crisis era, of course, the number of parliamentary employees is smaller. At the beginning of summer 2006, Parliament had 945 “regular” employees, 97 “specially appointed staff” and 671 “private individuals.”

Over the course of a few years after that, and as Greece headed toward the abyss, the numbers rose. On May 31, 2007, the figures for the corresponding categories were 938, 136 and 728. A year later, the numbers were more or less the same, but, in the watershed

summer of 2009, when Greece applied for a bailout loan to the International Monetary Fund and the European Union, Parliament had 989 “regular” employees, 164 “specially appointed staff” and 865 “private individuals.”

Every person working in Parliament costs the Greek taxpayer, and the numbers, taken comparatively, are revealing. In 2005, the salary bill for regular, private, temporary and so-called “special” categories of staff, along with “additional and attendant fees for political staff, military and police,” came to 71,570,200 euros. Five years later, and following more hirings, the bill had climbed almost 43 percent to 102.4 million euros,

According to the “TA NEA” newspaper in Athens , Greece’s IRS is now investigating Greek celebrities for possible tax evasion and/or fraud in order to determine if the income they declare in their tax returns equals to their lavish lifestyles. Quite surprisingly some of the biggest names on the Greek music scene are being investigated, most of which are GUILTY as suspected. Apart from singers, Greek tax authorities are also looking into the incomes of basketball players, publishers, soccer players and various entrepreneurs including actresses who are actually receiving State subsidies by being portrayed as unmarried daughters of civil servants and military personnel.

The article said that during the period 2008-2009 the “best boy” or the “Kalitero Paidi” who actually declared a very convincing tax return (or some EUR 822,059.43) was none other than Yiannis Ploutarchos as opposed to Anna Vissi who quite shockingly only declared an annual income of a mere EUR 30,751 in 2008 and only EUR 3,223 in 2009, and no assets! (Only three thousand Anna.... come on, get real!!!)

Anna apparently operates a company with ex-hubby Nikos Karvelas and has found a loophole on how to funnel her expnses through the company thereby not showing any income. Nice trick Anna... but it just won’t cut it.

The same trick is also being used by other artists such as Yiannis Kotsiras, who in 2008 declared an annual net income of EUR 24,281 but a big fat ZERO in 2009. The singer channels his fees and expenses through the company and does not declare any income. This probably explains why Elli Kokkinou declared a net income of EUR 4.447 in 2008 and a big fat ZERO in 2009 also.

Quite suspiciously, Sakis Rouvas only declared a net income of EUR 69.216 in 2008 while in 2009 this figure dropped to EUR 67.628. On the other hand, George Mazonakis declared a net income of EUR 65.586 in 2008 and EUR 45.176 for 2009. The amounts are small if you take into consideration that both these artists live in lavish homes (and neighborhoods) as well as lead extravagant lifestyles. Also we all know they headline most of the clubs they perform in and are probably two of the biggest names in the Greek music industry at the moment.

Panos Kiamos declared a revenue of EUR 388.386 or some 174,826 in 2008 and 213,560 in 2009. Now this sounds a little bit more convincing (although we are certain, it is not completely real).

As expected our beloved Paschalis Terzis (who is by far this author’s favorite personality) is apparently an upstanding citizen when it comes to his income tax and in 2008 he declared EUR 609.355 and roughly EUR 472.613 € in 2009. Notis Sfakianakis, on the other hand, who was already being closely monitored by the Greek IRS for tax evasion declared EUR 262.995 for 2008 and some EUR 375.670 for 2009.

Just like Anna Vissi, this author was also shocked to read that Peggy Zina (together with her husband -who are already being investigated for some 4.2 million Euros in unpaid taxes) only declared EUR 79.231 for 2008 and a mere EUR125.682 for 2009. (And from what we read in various papers at the weekend, aside from the lavish homes, lifestyle and yachts, the couple also owns some 10 automobiles! Obviously this one needs investigating)

With regard to real estate and various other properties, Yiannis Ploutarchos leads the pack with EUR 1.32 million, followed by Eleftheria Arvanitaki with EUR 982,910, Notis Sfakianakis with EUR 923.224, Paschalis Terzis with EUR 855.288 and (Mrs. I only declared 0 on my tax return) Elli Kokkinou with EUR 564.247.

So there you have it. To “Kalitero Paidi” wins once again as does our beloved Paschalis Terzis. Two men, who never once fell victim to the shallow lifestyle of the “rich and famous” and are as real as their music. And on that note... two of our favorite songs from both men, because they really are upstanding citizens!

St John’s hosted its first Art Show in many years and it was a huge success despite the cold weather, with many parents, students and visitors from the wider community attending at the exhibition. The show got its name The Red Fly as a fly landed in the red paint of a Jackson Pollack inspired art work. Students tried to rescue it, yet couldn’t. The fly eventually drowned in the red paint. Hence the Students called it The Red Fly.

The newly-appointed principal of St John’s College, Dr Ladopoulos, who has a Doctorate in Art & Education, is very supportive of the Arts and is turning the school around in terms of understanding the importance of the Arts in students’ lives and development by measuring the success of the school based on the students’ engagement and joy alongside the academic scores. Dance, music, drama and fine Arts are now part of the curriculum and also the basis of most of the extra-curricular activities that go on in the school.

The art show has a strong recycling focus with an ocean theme. Students in Grade 3 used unwanted water bottles to make fish and students in Grade 1 used plastic shopping bags to make jelly fish. The Prep students created papier mache pigs alongside with their buddies in Grade 6. The Grade 4 students created a landscape using bottle lids and also looked at appropriation of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa. Grade 5 created self-portraits titled “What’s in my head.” They filled their silhouettes with images of things they liked and expressed their uniqueness.

Our door prize was a copy of Vivienne Morris’ book “The Portraits of Hellenes in Antipodes”. Ms Anna Arvanitis, the Art Teacher at St John’s, said “I love seeing students engage in the Arts as students develop a higher sense of self-esteem and self-expression” while Dr Ladopoulos, after welcoming all the guests in his Art Exhibition opening speech, explained why Art is practical and powerful, why it is a valid career option and how it becomes an important learning tool.

KOUZINAPSARI KLEFTIKORED SNAPPER EN PAPILOTTE

Serves 4 Prep time 20 min

Ingredients- 4 pieces Red Snapper Fillets

or any piece white-fleshed fish fillet such as sea bass, whiting or mullet (about 150-200 gm each)

- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil plus additional for drizzling

- 2 garlic cloves, very thinly sliced - 12 cherry or grape tomatoes,

halved (peeled if you like)- 2 tablespoons drained capers - 8 thin lemon slices (from 1 large

lemon) - 8 fresh thyme sprigs - Sea salt- Cracked pepper

Method:• Preheat oven to 200ºC with rack

in middle.• Heat oil in a heavy based skillet

over medium-high heat until it begins to smoke, then sauté garlic until pale golden, about 30 seconds. Add tomatoes and a pinch of salt and sauté until tomatoes are softened, about 1 minute. Stir in capers. Remove from heat.

• Pat fish dry with absorbent paper and sprinkle both sides with salt and pepper.

• Arrange 4 (25-30 cm) heart shapes of parchment paper on a work surface. Drizzle one side of each parchment heart with a little olive oil, then place 2 lemon slices, followed with a fish fillet and top with thyme sprigs.

• Spoon tomato mixture over fish.• Gather parchment up around

fish to form a pouch, press down followed by continuously folding edges over until no opening is left. Put pouches in a large shallow baking pan and bake until fish is just cooked through, about 8 to 10 minutes. Hint: approx 2 min from time pouch begins to fill up with steam.

• To serve, cut an incision in the middle and rip paper from middle outwards. You may leave in bag or remove the bag.

Recipe by Theo Kostoglou

DID YOU KNOW?The first person to propose that everything is made of atoms was Democritus in 440 BC.

He reasoned that, if he were to attempt to cut an object in half over and over again, he would eventually reach a tiny grain of matter that could not be cut in half. Democritus called these hypothetical building blocks of matter “atoms”, after the Greek atomos meaning ‘uncuttable’.

Port Adelaide football star John McCarthy made phone call to girlfriend before plunging to death

JOHN McCarthy made a phone call to his girlfriend about an hour before his fatal fall from the roof of a Las Vegas hotel. Port Adelaide Football Club spokesman Andrew Rutter confi rmed the 22-year-old had spoken to his partner, Danielle Smarrelli, but the context of the conversation is still not clear. Ms Smarrelli told Port Adelaide offi cials McCarthy sounded confused and said he wanted to return home. It has been suggested McCarthy had been disorientated during the phone call, but exactly how he ended up at the Flamingo Hotel and Casino - more than 4km from the Hard Rock Hotel where the group was staying - is still being investigated.

It is understood McCarthy had been with teammates trying to gain entry into a nightclub before the incident. It comes as security footage to be scrutinised by US investigators reportedly shows McCarthy walking into the hotel only minutes before his fatal fall. The star was also apparently captured in the vision standing on the casino roof about three fl oors up moments before the tragedy.

While an investigation may take up to three months to complete, offi cials are working with his family to release the body to their custody in the next 24 hours. A Las Vegas police department spokeswoman said the Nevada’s Clark County Coroner’s Offi ce would reveal the cause and manner of McCarthy’s death only after a written autopsy and toxicology reports are released.

JOHN MCCARTHY

The fi ve teams that will be participating in this years Premier League fi nal series was decided in Round 21.

South Melbourne FC saw their hopes of a spot in the fi nals evaporate as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Bentleigh Greens . With so much promise and expectation in the lead-up to the 2012 season, it’s fair to say South Melbourne’s campaign has been nothing but a massive disaster.

Northcote City secured their place in the fi nals with a strong win over a rather poor Oakleigh Cannons last Friday night. Anthi Karayianni and Manolis Stefanoudakis took Greece’s fi nal medal tally to 12 in the London Paralympics that concluded last Sunday with the closing ceremony.

Karayianni fi nished third in the long jump F13 fi nal measuring 5.16 meters to claim bronze, just like four years ago in Beijing.Stefanoudakis also grabbed a bronze medal by fi nishing third in the javelin F54/55/56 fi nal with his best shot at 27.37 meters.

Greece’s medal tally was therefore half of that in Beijing: One gold, three silvers and eight bronzes.Given the country;s fi nancial problems, though this is no small feat and as swimmer Charalambos Taiganidis told Skai radio on Ssturday the Paralympians cannot ask for too much from the state right now.”You cannot ask an injured horse to fi nish fi rst in a race,» said the athlete with 10 medals in the last three Paralympics.
