SEASONS GREETINGS
enjoy, participate, succeed
The Westgate School hosted our first ever Slough
Young Ambassador Conference to around 50 budding
young leaders from across the borough.
Young people from eight different schools in
Slough attended from Year 10 to Year
12 (Schools included: Arbour Vale,
Herschel Grammar, Langley Grammar,
Long Close, St Bernards, St Josephs,
Westgate and Wexham).
The day was delivered in
partnership with our awesome
partners Mars in the Community and
Create Development providing a
great afternoon of skill development,
character building and also
developing those vital personal skills
to get yourself ‘above the rest’ when
applying to university or the
workplace.
The day was opened by the truly
inspiring Rion Pierre a current GB sprinter who
took our young people on a journey of
overcoming adversity, making the most of
any opportunity that comes your way and
knowing what success really means to
you...some vital life lessons to be heard!
The day then kicked into a whole
group work-shop
with Create
Development
Director, Tim
Dancer who took
the young people
through the principles of real Coaching, supporting
them to gain a deeper understanding of developing
the child and to align coaching habits in order to
develop a truly child centred approach.
Our leaders were then
separated into two groups and went
off to explore 'developing your
communication, the power of
language' delivered by real Coaching
tutor Jason Elwell and also 'setting
yourself above the rest' delivered by
the SSSN and Lorna Catling from
MARS.
Lorna took the young people
through sample CV's, covering letters
and what to do and not do in terms of
interview techniques – all great life
skills for the future! We also took
them through opportunities out there to work in
the world of sport being it in marketing, PR, event
organisation, nutrition...1000s of different
opportunities!
The feedback from the day has been excellent
and we will certainly be making this a regular
event on the calendar! A massive thank you to all
our
wonderful
partners involved
on the day and
our hosts The
Westgate School,
Mr Root and his
team!

England arrived at Twickenham on Saturday 19th
November on an unbeaten run stretching back to the
last game of the World Cup against Uraguay. This was
as well as an unbeaten 6 Nations tournament this year,
when they completed the ‘Grand Slam’ to be crowned
Kings of the northern hemisphere.
Since then England had gone on to beat
Australia three times in Australia and ran in 37 points
while beating a South African team the previous week.
15 Ditton Park Academy students arrived at
Twickenham on the same day with very little
experience of watching professional sport, let alone an
82,000 sell out at Twickenham, the expectations were
very high from the boys. With Fiji causing Australia,
Wales and England some trouble in the World Cup, a
close game could be expected.
The first experience was seeing the Fiji team up
close as they got off their team bus, to say some of the
players were big would be an understatement, they
Ditton Park take on TwickenhamDitton Park take on Twickenham
looked like man mountains, one student commented:
“Oh My God, they are enormous,
they’re even bigger than you sir”
(Referring to the teacher who happens to be an ex
professional rugby player!)
After a few trips to the various food retailers,
we took our seats only 20 or so rows back from the
field of play. The game started quickly and England had
scored five tries within the first 26 minutes. Fiji rallied
in the run up to half time scoring two tries and another
came shortly after half time to make it 34-15, another
score from Fiji and it could be game on. The big come
back was not to be however, with England going on to
secure a 37-21 victory and looking comfortable in doing
so .
We headed back to Slough after a very
enjoyable day, with some newly engaged England
Rugby fans, hopefully a trip we can do a few more
times next year.
The timeline for School Games Mark for the 2016/17 academic year, is as

Being part of the Berkshire Young
Coaches Academy involves learning
to be a holistic coach, who puts
control into the hands of the child
while having a growth mind-set in
relation to both my own and the
child's development.
After attending two
modules so far, myself and four
other Young Coaches from Sough
have been introduced to the
influence and importance of a
coach, the key values of a 'real
coach', the development of
fundamental skills and the need to
challenge and support the whole
child, not just their physical aspects.
During the modules we
have been shown why it is
important to focus on general
fundamental skills at a young age
rather than sport specific activities
and have been given access to
resources from 'real Coaching' to
take into our own coaching
sessions.
These resources include
warm-up games, activity cards for
coaches and the participating
children and posters for each of the
6 cogs – physical, creative, cognitive,
health and fitness, personal and
social, explaining how we can
develop each element of the child
to improve them as a rounded
individual.
I am enjoying this
programme as it has opened my
eyes to the impact of a coach and
the significance of learning basic
fundamental skills – agility, balance
and coordination, in order to create
opportunities to participate and
compete in a range of sports.

This term, we at Priory School welcomed Hannah
Macleod, Olympic Gold Medallist, to officially open our
new running track. Hannah spent time inspiring our
children at our official Daily Mile Launch. She captured
the imagination of the children by talking about her
experiences and proudly showing her Olympic gold
medal. She also told the children of the importance of
trying to be the best you can be both in and out of the
classroom.
As a school we have invested in the health and
wellbeing of our children by building a purpose built
running track and
educating children on the
importance of nutrition
and hard work. We have
launched a new initiative,
where children spend 15
minutes a day outside of
the classroom, running or
walking up to a mile. This
initiative has been
hugely successful and
we have invited other
schools to come and
talk to us more about
this. The children love
it! get in touch with [email protected] for
more info.
At our official launch day, our Sports Council
children were busy tallying points and we made it a
fantastic House Day.
Elaine Wyllie, Daily Mile initiator, says “I'm delighted to
hear that Priory School is introducing The Daily Mile.
This will benefit the health and wellbeing of all
children and staff. I congratulate them in being the
first school in Slough to lead the way and I look
forward to it being implemented by other local schools.
As one of England's largest schools it will be a beacon
for schools everywhere who want to solve the
childhood obesity crisis which faces this country.”

The first event to kick off
the primary competition
calendar this term was
the Yr 5 & 6 Girls Football
competition – a new
competition this
academic year that saw
150 girls take part! With
16 teams attending to
compete, the scene was set
for a great competition at
Marish Primary. After the
usual rounds of pool
matches, it was Lynch Hill
and Parlaunt Park that found
themselves in the final and
after some exciting game
play, it was Parlaunt Park
that became the first
champions in this event.
Next up, the primary
competition focus remained
on the pitch for the Yr 3 & 4
Football Tournament.
Another well attended
event, the day saw just over
230 students from 18 schools
take part to play in this
mixed competition that saw
boys and girls play together.
After the pool stages had
whittled down the 24 teams
to just four semi-finalists, it
was Lynch Hill and Western
House that made it through
to the final - this time Lynch
Hill were not going to
succumb to defeat and they
were the team to walk away
with the golden reward.
The Langley
Academy were the hosts of
the next event for primary
students and this time it was
the infants that had a
chance to compete! The
Infant Legacy Event saw
children working in their
school teams and moving around different activity
stations accruing points for their school. The emphasis
here, was about improving your 'Personal Best' and
participants were encouraged to try and beat their
scores when doing the activities for a second time.
The Sportshall Athletics team was again hired
in to deliver what has to be the most colourful (and
noisy!) of all competitions and competitors weren't
going to be disappointed!
Throughout the course of
the day, just under 500 Yr 3 &
4 and Yr 5 & 6 students
passed through Herschel
Grammar's sports hall to take
part in track and field events.
Points were soon adding up
for those teams in
attendance from the
running, jumping and
throwing activities in the
field, together with the track
races and relays.
Once the last race had
been run and the final jump
had been made, Lynch Hill
were crowned winners of
both the Yr 3 & 4 and Yr 5 &
6 competitions, with Holy
Family and Cippenham
Primary taking the silver
medals for these events
respectively.
BISI Badminton was the
last event to take place for
primaries this term and with
10 teams competing, the
contest was on! The Yr 3 &
4's made their way around
eight different activity
stations including Shuttle
Relay, Target Practi e, c
Shuttle Cricket and Triple Hit
Relay, scoring points for their
team as they went. After the
last whistle was blown to
signify the end of the
competition, all points were
totted up… and it was no
December 2016
surprise to see Goldophin Junior in
poll position – they had after all,
been the top scoring team in a
number of the activity stations!
The
first of
the Network events for
secondaries was to come
next and it was Inclusive
Zone Basketball that took
centre stage. Just over 40
students from 3 Slough
schools, in addition to
invited schools from
Bracknell and Wokingham
were in attendance, for a
day of wheelchair basketball drills, skills and
competition. The event was supported by colleagues
from Arbour Vale School and the leading wheelchair
basketball club in Berkshire, Thames Valley Kings.
Students with both lower limb impairments dependant
on wheelchairs on a daily basis, competed alongside
non wheelchair users in what really was a fun
afternoon of inclusive activity.
Langley Grammar hosted the last event of the
autumn term, Yr 8 Sportshall
Athletics. Nine boys teams
and ten girls teams were in
attendance to take part in
track and field events that
saw participants competing
in speed bounce, vertical
jump, shot put and relay
races to name but a few
activities!
The competition ran
over morning and afternoon
sessions and so it wasn't until later that the final results
could be revealed. St. Bernard's were again gold medal
winners in both the girls and boys categories, with
Langley Academy and St. Joseph's following closely
behind for silver medals in the respective events.

Arbour Vale’s PE Department have had a hectic first
term, as always, but it has been both successful and
varied.
Wheelpower ran their annual
week of games at Stoke Mandeville
Sports Centre. Our six secondary and
post 16 students enjoyed a few days
competing in swimming, pool, fencing,
athletics, shooting archery, wheelchair
basketball and table tennis. Our students
performed well, and the level of
competition they faced was of a very
good standard.
It was really good to see our
selected primary pupils achieve great
things during swimming lessons at
Montem Leisure Centre. They have
worked hard to achieve all their
swimming levels and have earned ASA badges to
recognise their fine achievements.
The Arbour Vale School Panathlon team
performed really well in the
South of England Event at
Basildon Sporting Village, in
Essex. It was a very
successful day, with Arbour
Vale entering a team who
finished in a respectable
third place. This was a great
achievement, as for many
of our students it was their
first time participating in
any school competition.
Our tag rugby team entered the SEN county
tournament, hosted by Brookfields School. Again Arbour
Vale fielded two teams of inexperienced players, so it
was fantastic that we finished second in both
competitions.
In the county Inclusive Zone Basketball
competition, hosted by Westgate School, we also
entered two teams to compete successfully against local
rival mainstream schools. It was another fantastic day
and our teams performed well once again.
It was fantastic to see our primary students
compete against Priory School in a friendly Boccia and
New Age Kurling competition. It was a really positive
experience for our primary students to compete against
A great sporting start for Arbour Vale a mainstream school.
Our full course and short course GCSE students
are now working hard to study for their respective
qualifications. The students have applied
themselves well and are rising to the
challenge of completing a national
certified qualification.
Some of our Year 11 students have
successfully completed their AQA
trampolining and Winstrada
accreditations. Many congratulations to
the students, who have really enjoyed
making great progress in the sport.
The PE Department supported the
school's Children in Need Day by
providing the usual round of fun
sporting activities and competitive
games, for the whole school to enjoy. It
was a very colourful day, and contributed to a significant
sum of money being raised for the charity.
Our Leadership programmes have also
recommenced this school
year. Sahal Hage and Owen
Gareppo have been selected
as our Young Ambassadors
for this year. They both
attended training at
Westgate School, alongside
their mainstream peers.
Both students worked very
hard on their training day.
They now understand the
expectations of being a
Young Ambassador.
Kieran Kane has joined the Berkshire Young
Coaches Academy and is working alongside his
mainstream peers. He attended a training day aimed at
developing his coaching skills and will continue to
receive further training throughout this year.
Lastly our Duke of Edinburgh students attended
an overnight assessment camp in the beautiful setting of
Hurley. They completed a walk along the Thames path
as a part of the overnight hiking and camping
expedition; all in the company of an external moderator.
It was pleasing that all six pupils passed their external
moderation.
On behalf of the PE Department I wish everyone
a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. -Matt Downey
