The Newsletter

We all know what a difficult and trying year 2020 was. Though it can be easy to worry about the days ahead – hope, comfort, and care are things that we can all look forward to as we work through these times together.

We at Hospice of Central New York and Hospice of the Finger Lakes are fully aware of life's challenges. In fact, our mission is to provide hope, comfort, and care to those experiencing their end-of-life journey.

When COVID-19 hit our community, we endured a new challenge unlike any we’ve ever seen before. With the highest priority being the safety of our patients, staff, and volunteers, we instituted new protocols and guidelines to ensure that we could - and would - be able to continue to provide our essential services to those in need.

Our Medical Director initiated updates to our staff on all the safety precautions, which continue to this day. Our staff was provided the necessary equipment - masks, gowns, gloves, and hand sanitizer - despite the increased costs and shortage of available supplies. We implemented social distancing guidelines and mask requirements in our office, and our clinical staff began working remotely. All staff were - and still are - required to self-monitor daily with temperature checks and a symptom guidelines checklist.

Through all the challenges this past year has brought us, our determined team of healthcare professionals never wavered, despite the very real challenges of serving those in need during a pandemic. Though we cared for more patients and their families than ever before, the quality of our service, our dedication to comfort, and our ability to empower patients with dignity and hope has remained resolute.

With the tremendous support of our Hospice community, and the desire of patients and families to be home together during their end-of-life journey, we expect to have another monumental year of service in 2021.

Together, we can do so much! Together, we will get through this!

500 Masks for Hospice! Mike and Dee Sperling have been home since March. The only time they are outside of their house is to do “pick-up” service at a local Walmart or other stores for necessary food and supplies. Dee noted that they have only seen family members three times and, when they do, they are on their front porch and maintaining social distance.

Mike is a current Hospice volunteer and Dee used to work at Hospice many years ago. At the onset of COVID-19 in March, Dee said they, "felt totally useless with no purpose.” Then, Hospice sent out a Monday Morning Memo (a weekly informational email sent to all staff and volunteers) with a request for masks for employees and families. Dee then purchased a new sewing machine! She and Mike began setting up the sewing room and spare bedroom, and began preparing masks.

Using the CDC guidelines, Mike cuts 16 masks at a time with two different cloth materials. Dee said, “That way you are able to determine which is the inside and outside.” The cost of each mask is just under $2. “They are invaluable, priceless, every single one of them,” Dee says. She also stated that it feels good to make them and “perhaps save a life.” Together, they have made 500 masks for the Hospice staff and families since April!

Mike enjoys making them as well. He says it substitutes for not being in the office weekly and helps him stay connected with friends at Hospice.

We asked Dee and Mike about their quality of life being in quarantine since March. Dee stated they purchased a virtual reality headset called Oculus Quest 2, which helps them escape from the world as it is today. "It can take to you the beach, you can climb a mountain, go bowling or play golf." Mike and Dee golf together and Mike is keeping up with his bowling skills.

Having celebrated their 52nd year of marriage in December, it seems they are making the best of the situation. Mike is eager to return to his weekly duties at Hospice and knows it may not be for another year. However, in the meantime, he and Dee will continue to make masks as needed or anything else Hospice needs, just to stay connected.

“The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others” –Anonymous

Festival Of TreesHospice of Central New York and Hospice of the Finger Lakes participated in the 8th Annual Festival of Trees event held at the Ward O’Hara Agricultural and Country Living Museum in Auburn, NY.

Our tree was decorated in a gold theme with ornaments that reflect the core of Hospice care - Hope, Comfort, and Care - and was on display among 115 decorated trees through-out the holiday season. The museum offered prizes for the best-decorated trees voted by visitors between the months of November and December. Winners will be notified in the month of January.

Thank you everyone who made a visit and voted for our tree! All trees will remain up until January 31, 2021.

Tips To Get Through These Mentally Challenging Times…Have you caught yourself staring off lately, lost in thought in all of the things going on in the world right now? Have you felt overwhelmed, uncertain, or even confused? It’s okay, so have we. Below are some ideas for how to curb these thoughts and stay mentally and physically healthy.• Express Kindness and Compassion Towards Yourself & Others… We are

all in this together, so it is critical to be patient with ourselves and also those around us. We never know the kind of day someone could be having, and a random act of kindness could make all the difference in someone else's day... and in yours!

• Take Care of Your Body… Practice deep breathing, meditation, and yoga. These activities are proven to help reduce anxiety you may be feeling, and will help you to become more mindful.

• Take a Media Break… Trust us on this one! Even if it’s just for a few hours - leave your phone, computer, or tablet in the other room. Read a book, go outside and walk, and just detach from all of the negative these items can bring into our lives.

• Look Out for One Another… Call a neighbor or a friend – see how they are doing. Do you know someone on the front lines? Offer to bring them dinner or pick up some groceries for them. Small acts can go very far.

• Add Some Humor to Your Life… “Take time each day to laugh. Whether it’s a favorite comedy show, silly pets or hilarious kids, there is always something that can bring some joy and laughter into your life. Having a good laugh each day will help you to unwind and will reduce stress.

“Life is not the way it’s supposed to be, it’s the way it is. The way you cope is what makes the difference.” – Virginia Satir

A Season To Remember Thanks to our generous com-munity, over $30,000 was raised through our 2020 Tribute Lights Appeal.

These funds will provide both the critical funding needed to pay for costly medications, supplies, and equipment for patients, as well as dignity and comfort at the end of life. On November 5th and November 12th, we hosted socially distanced, ride-through events at our Auburn and Liverpool offices respectively.

The events were designed to allow guests an opportunity to pause and reflect as they rode through the pathways lined with luminaries representing the shining memories of their loved ones. A token of remembrance was provided to each family.

Giving Great Thanks To A Local Partner…It takes a special person to reach out to others to offer support during a pandemic. We here at Hospice of Central New York and Hospice of the Finger Lakes were truly blessed when Kevin Connolly, the General Manager of the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center reached out to us with his idea for our Hospice families.

His idea… to help ease the burden of preparing Thanksgiving din-ner so some of our Hospice families could enjoy more time together. When Kevin called us with his thoughts our amazing teams of social workers and nurses couldn’t have been more excited and began reaching out to families that they believed could benefit from this special gift. We had no idea what the response would be, but within 48 hours of putting out the initial calls, we had 13 families (a total of 40 individuals) scheduled to receive dinners.

The day of was filled with excitement and hope – two things that we haven’t felt much of in this trying year. Meals were delivered, some tears were shed, and one recipient even broke out into song upon receiving his family's meal. We, here at Hospice are so grateful that the Sheraton chose us for this special gesture and hope to continue the partnership well into the future!

“There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up.”― John Holmes

What has been revealed to us is that through adversity, our Hospice community chooses generosity and kindness, and the

beneficaries are the patients and families we serve.

This generosity of spirit, time and resources is an inspiration. We at Hospice have felt the support, the love of community and

the great kindness.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. We could not do what we do with out you!

“Adversity does not build character, it reveals it.” – James Lane Allen
