Sunday WORSHIP SERVICE:

9:30 AM

Sunday School:

{Does not meet during the Summer

months}

Thank God for another year at

Albright. I have officially completed my

first year with you. And I pray that God

will continue to bless our ministry

together at Albright. I look forward to

serving you and serving with you in the

coming year.

Current events have caused me to

ponder about the Lord’s Prayer. As

I prepare my sermons on the Lord’s

Prayer, I am reminded of the recent

events in our world, in our country, and

in our city. As I watch and listen to the

news, I hear so much turmoil and strife

in our cities: the killings of citizens by

police in our own city and other cities

like St. Paul, Baton Rouge, and else-

where; and the shootings and killings

of police officers by citizens of this city

and New York City, Kansas City, and

Dallas.

Our citizens need to be protected by the

police, not shot by them while holding

their hands up. People are human beings

and should be treated with dignity. On

the other hand, our police officers

deserve respect and honor, not to be shot

at, have rocks thrown at them, or be spit

upon. Both types of harm need to stop.

Oh Lord, may thy kingdom come now!

Then we hear of wars and terror attacks

in Europe and the Middle East. Attacks

in France, Belgium, Germany and the

coup attempt in Turkey and the ongoing

war in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, not

to mention the threat posed by Iran,

North Korea, and even China.

This year is also an election year. And

no matter what candidate you’ll vote for,

be thankful for democracy. Thank God

for democracy. It may not be the perfect

form of government, but it’s still by far

the best — especially the democracy we

have in the U.S. For many of us who

have experienced no other type of

government, we need to cherish

democracy before it’s taken away from

us. You don’t want to live in a

Communist society. You don’t want to

live in a society ruled by Sharia Law.

And you might not want to live under a

monarchy.

Oh Lord, thy will be done on earth!

In my theology, a theocracy is the best

form of government. What I mean is the

rule of God in our hearts. That is what

Israel was before the kings were

crowned. God wanted them to live under

his rule, but they wanted an earthly king

like the rest of the world. That was the

beginning of the rejection of God by

Israel. (Continued on Page 2)

THE Albright Msaic Page 2 August 2016

But God never gave up on his remnant. And he

promised an Eternal King, the Messiah, the King

of kings, and Lord of lords, the Lion from the tribe

of Judah, Jesus Christ.

He did come and will come again, and will rule

for 1,000 years before ushering in the Eternal State

(Revelation 20-22). That Eternal State, which is

called the New Jerusalem, or the New Heaven and

the New Earth, will be an Eternal Theocracy. When

we have a true theocracy, there will be true peace.

Theocracy has been fulfilled in the Christ’s first

coming and will ultimately fulfilled in the Eternal

Kingdom. The first coming of the Lord Jesus Christ

has ushered in the end times (1 John 2:18; 1 Peter

1:20; Hebrews 1:2, 9:26). The second coming has

been promised by Christ himself (Matthew 24, 25;

John 14; Revelation; and countless references in the

Gospels and the Epistles).

No matter what happens in this period of time or

in the future, I know that God is in control. God

was with Adam and Eve, when they failed

miserably. God was with Noah during the flood.

God was with Abraham when he started a new

nation; God was there with Joseph and later Moses

in Egypt. God was with King David and King

Solomon in the greatest era ever in Israel’s

history. God was with his people when the Northern

Kingdom, Israel was taken captive by the

Assyrians. God was with them when the

Babylonians, led by Nebuchadnezzar took the

Southern Kingdom, Judah, into captivity. God was

with them when the Persians took over the

Babylonian Empire. God was with them when

Alexander the Great conquered the Persians and

more. Alexander was so influential that even today,

we still speak Greek. Greek is ingrained in Western

society.

Our very own New Testament was written in Greek.

And God was there with his people when the

Romans conquered the Greek empire. Julius Caesar

took over the Roman Empire and later Gaius

Octavius who became Caesar Augustus and built the

Roman Empire into the most powerful kingdom that

ever existed. No Empire has ever matched that of the

Romans. After the Emperor Constantine became a

Christian, the entire Empire became Christian and

the persecution of Christians that had lasted for over

two hundred years ceased. The Roman influence

lives on to this modern day in the Roman Catholic

Church. More significantly, the very English letters

that I’m typing here are Latin characters. We are

living in the Latin era. And this era will last until

God knows when… until thy kingdom come.

My point is that despite hostility towards God’s

people by the world’s empires, God is still in

control. The British Empire has shrunk back to the

British Isles. Hitler has fallen. The Soviet Union is

no more. Therefore, no matter what happens to the

United States, God is still in control. We should not

put our trust and hope in government. We should put

our trust in God. The founders of this country knew

that truth full well when they “coined” the words “In

God We Trust” on every form of currency we have in

the United States. I often remind myself of the fact

that Egyptian glory had been around for almost 2000

years when Moses came along. And look at Egypt

today. And perhaps the Chinese kingdom has been

around even longer! But there is no more emperor

today. Worldly empires will come and go, but God’s

kingdom will last forever. The United States is a

relatively young country, with only 300 years of

history. Who knows what will happen to this country

in the future. Who knows what empire will rise next.

Preparing for Worship

By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered,

and confidently waiting come what may,

we know that God is with us night and morning

and never fails to greet us each new day.

Yet is this heart by its old foe tormented,

still evil days bring burdens hard to bear.

O give our frightened souls the sure salvation

for which, O Lord, you taught us to prepare.

And when this cup you give is filled to brimming

with bitter suffering, hard to understand,

we take it thankfully and without trembling,

out of so good, and so beloved, a hand.

**See History of this hymn on Page 9

Yet when again, in this same world, you give us

the joy we had, the brightness of your sun,

we shall remember all the days we lived through,

and our whole life shall then be yours alone.

Now, when your silence deeply spreads around us,

O let us hear all your creation says -

that world of sound which soundlessly invades us,

and all your children's highest hymns of praise.

by Lynne Hines-Levy

It occurred to me in a flash of brilliance (well, maybe

not brilliance, but it DID occur to me), that we throw

the acronym CDC around a lot. Does everyone even

know what it stands for or, if they do, just what the

CDC actually does? Maybe I should explain..........

The CDC, or Centers for Disease Control, is one of

the major operating components of the Department of

Health and Human Services. CDC works 24/7 to

protect America from health, safety and security

threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases

start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable

or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC

fights disease and supports communities and citizens

to do the same.

CDC increases the health security of our nation. As

the nation’s health protection agency, CDC saves

lives and protects people from health threats. To

accomplish our mission, CDC conducts critical

science and provides health information that protects

our nation against expensive and dangerous health

threats, and responds when these arise.

CDC in the 21st Century On the cutting edge of health security –

confronting global disease threats through advanced

computing and lab analysis of huge amounts of data to

quickly find solutions.

Putting science into action – tracking disease and

finding out what is making people sick and the most

effective ways to prevent it.

Helping medical care – bringing new knowledge to

individual health care and community health to save

more lives and reduce waste.

Fighting diseases before they reach our borders –

detecting and confronting new germs and diseases

around the globe to increase our national security.

Nurturing public health - building on our

significant contribution to have strong,

well-resourced public health leaders and

capabilities at national, state and local levels

to protect Americans from health threats.

CDC's Role Detecting and responding to new and emerging

health threats

Tackling the biggest health problems causing death

and disability for Americans

Putting science and advanced technology into action

to prevent disease

Promoting healthy and safe behaviors, communities

and environment

Developing leaders and training the public health

workforce, including disease detectives

Taking the health pulse of our nation

CDC's Pledge to the American People 1. Be a diligent steward of the funds entrusted to our

agency

2. Provide an environment for intellectual and

personal growth and integrity.

3. Base all public health decisions on the highest

quality scientific data that is derived openly and

objectively.

4. Place the benefits to society above the benefits.

to our institution

5. Treat all persons with dignity, honesty, and respect.

History of Hymns: “By Gracious Powers” by C. Michael Hawn - Discipleship Ministries,

The United Methodist Church—(Online)

"By Gracious Powers"

Dietrich Bonhoeffer, trans. by Fred Pratt Green

The United Methodist Hymnal, No. 517

Of all of the hymns written in the 20th century,

“By Gracious Powers” has one of the most poignant

stories. Australian hymnologist Wesley Milgate

provides the setting for this text, written in the

waning days of World War II by the imprisoned

Lutheran minister Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945):

“From the Gestapo bunker in Prinz-Albert-Strasse, Berlin,

to which he had been transferred to Tegel on 8 October

1944, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote this New Year message

to his friends on the last New Year’s Eve of his life, 31

December 1944; it was smuggled out of his prison, and

has become one of Bonhoeffer’s best know composi-

tions.”

Bonhoeffer had traveled to the United States in

1939, where he was met with acclaim among theologians.

Knowing the perilous situation in Germany, he was

encouraged by many in the United States to remain in this

country. He chose to return to Germany, however, where

he participated in the Nazi resistance and was arrested in

April 1943. The Nazis executed Bonhoeffer on April 9,

1945, just a month before the end of World War II.

How does a smuggled letter from a Nazi prison

become a hymn? The poem made its way to his mother in

a letter dated Dec. 28, 1944. It was then printed in Brief

und Aufzeichnungen aus der Haft by Eberhard Bethge and

then translated into English for Letters and Papers from

Prison (1953).

In 1959, the poem appeared in two additional

sources: the German text was cited in a youth hymnal,

Die singende Shar published in Berlin, and in

Bonhoeffer’s posthumously published book, The Cost of

Discipleship, under the title “New Year 1945” in seven

stanzas.

The World Council of Churches wanted to include

it in their international hymnal Cantate Domino (1974).

The editor, British hymnologist Erik Routley (1917-

1982), invited one of the leading hymn writers of the last

half of the 20th century, British Methodist Fred Pratt

Green (1903-2000), to versify five of the stanzas.

Green’s English setting captures the depth of the

original poem as Bonhoeffer struggled with his

impending death. Perhaps not since William Cowper

(1731-1800) wrote his hymn, “God Moves in a

Mysterious Way,” has such a powerful hymn on God’s

providence been written.

British hymnologist J. R. Watson notes: “Bonhoeffer’s

exemplary life and martyrdom have given this text an

authority which is unique among twentieth-century

hymns. . . . But the hymn stands on its own, without the

need of special circumstances to justify its inclusion.”

The singer is captured by the eloquence and depth

in the first line: We are “sheltered” by the “gracious

powers” of God, allowing us to “confidently wait . . .

come what may.” The grace of God, pervading our

existence, is “with us night and morning” and always

“greet[s] us each new day.”

Knowing the context of the author’s circumstance

clarifies the second stanza, as Bonhoeffer faced “evil

days” with “burdens hard to bear.” But God’s “sure

salvation” prepares our “frightened souls.”

The third stanza recalls the image of Christ in the

Garden of Gethsemane: “ . . . when this cup you give is

filled to brimming/with bitter sorrow. . . . ” Following

Christ’s example, “we take [this cup] thankfully and

without trembling” from Christ’s “good and so beloved

a hand.”

The final stanza places the difficulties of our lives

within the broader context of a life belonging to our

Creator. “The joy we had, the brightness of your sun”

overshadows the burdens of life and “all the days we lived

through,” and we rest assured that “our whole life shall

then be [Christ’s] alone.”

I have sent this text to friends who have endured

great loss and found that it both articulated their circum-

stance and provided profound assurance of God’s

presence.

Bonhoeffer is commemorated as a theologian and martyr by the United Methodist Church, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and several church members of the Anglican Communion including the Episcopal

Church (USA) on the anniversary of his death, 9 April.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The book of Revelation speaks of a future human

empire that will be unmatched by any past or

current empire. It will be the ultimate super power.

One man, the Anti-Christ, who bears the trademark

666 (Revelation 13) will have power over all

governments of the earth and will control all of its

economy. But no human power can surpass God’s

sovereignty. God is the sovereign Lord of all. Jesus

Christ, the King of kings, will subdue the Anti-

Christ and He will establish his 1,000 year rule in

the city of Jerusalem. The peace will be experienced

in what is called the Millennial Kingdom will be

unmatched by any peace that we have experienced.

It will be heaven on earth. But that is not even the

Eternal State yet. At the end of the 1,000 year rule

of Christ on earth, Christ will deliver up his kingdom

to the Father and the Eternal State will begin

(Revelation 20-22).

I say this to put into perspective the Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father in heaven, help us to honor your

name. Come and set up your kingdom, so that

everyone on earth will obey you, as you are obeyed

in heaven. Give us our food for today. Forgive us

for doing wrong, as we forgive others. Keep us

from being tempted and protect us from evil. For

yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory

forever. Amen.

Christian Education Update / VBS 2016 G-FORCE - GOD'S LOVE IN ACTION ""In God we live, move, and exist." — Acts 17:28a CEB

by Liz Cannon

Vacation Bible School 2016 was held from June 20th- 24th at Albright United Methodist

Church. Our goal was to put the children's minds and bodies in motion to share and experience the fullness

of an active life in Christ. We kicked off the week with the story of God calling on Moses, and encouraged

the children to MOVE! The music, science, craft, and recreation activities reinforced the Bible story and

the action word each day.

Our VBS mission was to raise funds for Imagine No Malaria. A mosquito bed net costs

$10.00. We collected $100.00 towards INM. The children helped to potentially protect 10 families from

this deadly disease.

Thank you to all of the kind and generous volunteers for sharing their time, energy, and faith with

the children throughout the week. You were the key to showing the children ways they can experience and

live out God's love in their lives!

Shine out today, shine out alway;

Shine out of my heart, Lord Jesus.
