Peacemaking & Social Justice Committee UpdateFocusing on the needs of Houston’s immigrant pop-ulation needs this year, P&SJ Committee members are beginning to educate themselves about Interface Ministries’ Refugee Assistance Program. This pro-gram provides services and support to equip refugees with the tools they need to make a new life, find work, care for their families, and take part in the American dream. Staff work to assure that every client feels welcomed and is self-sufficient within six months of arrival in the Houston community. Our committee has begun a discussion of ways that St. Philip and mem-bers of our congregation can get involved in a helpful way. We will have more to report on this activity at a later date.

Thank YouThank you so much for your prayers, notes, and well wishes for the past few months regarding my foot urgery. I continue to recover, but feet take a long time. My left foot was reconstructed a year ago and the right foot was operated on in January of this year. I am walking with vigor again, but with periodic pain. I am told, “Give it another year!” My wonderful hus-band has been terrific support! And I appreciate the support I have received from you! Jacqueline Hamilton Taylor

The next meeting of the St Philip Piece Maker quilting group will be on Tuesday, July 7, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. This group of quilters met for lunch at Beverly Baker’s home in June. The group is the recipient of “sew off” quilted fabric from HandiQuilter, a company that makes long arm quilt machines. Hope Wilmarth was at the HandiQuilter head- quarters in Salt Lake City, UT in March. When touring the plant, she discovered the “sew off” pieces created to test each machine before it is boxed for shipping. HandiQuilter donates the “sew offs” to groups that will pay the shipping, cut to size and bind. We are pictured here with some of the sew-off quilted fabric which we will use to make quilts for the children attending House of Tiny Treasures, an accredited preschool for homeless children under the umbrella of Search, one of St. Philip’s mission partners.

We are very excited to have Dr. Robert Dykstra, Professor of Pastoral Theology at Princeton Theological Semi-nary, with us this year on August 8th and 9th. “In an era characterized by endless war, fundamentalist religious fervor, the cacophony of politicians, and struggling churches, we long for relief from relentless exhaustion through grand solutions to intractable problems. But Jesus encourages us to find in small things – in children, yeast, mus-tard seeds, five loaves and two fishes, a pearl of great price – “the little ways that encourage good fortune” in the kingdom of God.” The weekend will include two sessions on Saturday with lunch, a Saturday evening gathering for Young Adults (20’s and 30’s), a gathering at the Sunday School hour for the Youth (Jr. and Sr. High’s), and Robert will preach at both worship services on Sunday.

SAVE THE DATE!.

Jenny Towns and Vicki McKay will be going on the Presbytery sponsored mission trip to Guatamala, specifically Guatemala City, Antigua and Xela. They will be there the week of July 17–24, in partnership with CEDEPCA. This is a cross-cultural exchange to learn more about the issues that Christians face in Guatamala. The congregation is encouraged to participate through dona-tions for the people in Guatemala. The following items are needed: pencil pouches, glue, scissors, pencils, pens, erasers, crayons, markers, band-aids, alcohol swabs, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, travel-sized shampoo and conditioner, blankCDs, and envelopes (light-weight items only please, no pads of paper for example). Please place your donations in the collection box in the Gathering Area and church office. The Disaster Ministry is hoping to provide 1000 Eco Water Filters (50 each) to high-risk communities in 2015. Money to purchase these water filters is another way to donate. You can make checks to St. Philip with Guatemala or CEDEPCA in the memo line. We will collect items through July 12.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Our church has had a prayer shawl ministry since December 2, 2002. During that time we have provided 87 Prayer Shawls for members of our church. If you would like to be part of this ministry please feel free to begin. If you have any questions you may call or email Ruth Ewing or Sue Shirley Howard.
