A Message From NAIFA-Omaha President Charles Olson II, LUTCF

“Talk is Cheap – Except When Congress Does It”

I like the headline quote above from Cullen Hightower, a well-known “quote and quip” writer. As NAIFA

members, our number one member benefit is advocacy. Nevertheless, how many of us truly understand

exactly what this means? Advocacy comes from the word “advocate” — which Merriam-Webster defines as

“one that pleads the cause of another.” NAIFA is the advisor’s advocate when it comes to the role of the agent as well as the tax-

favored benefits that our products enjoy. However, NAIFA needs all of us to get involved in order to advocate successfully.

Each of us has an important role to play — contributing to IFAPAC, responding to the GovAlerts, and getting involved at a

local level. We all have to do our part.

The luncheon on Oct. 15 will be a great opportunity for you to get even more involved in this process. A pre-meeting will

begin at 10:30 a.m., where we will have a “meet and greet” with our state senators. This is a chance for you to meet and

introduce yourself to the state senator from your district. The luncheon will include a message from IFAPAC (NAIFA’s Politi-

cal Action Committee), and NAIFA-Nebraska lobbyist Mick Mines will share with us what is on the agenda for the Nebraska

Unicameral.

Besides our luncheon, do not forget to attend the FREE CE opportunity followed by “NAIFA After Hours” on Oct. 14 in

Council Bluffs — and/or the FREE CE offered by NAIFA-Nebraska on Oct. 20. There is more information on these events in

this newsletter, so make sure you take advantage of these benefits of your NAIFA membership.

“If you don’t participate, if you decideto drop out, someone else will take yourplace. They will occupy your seat; they willcast your vote; they will choose your rep-resentative for you. ‘Your representative’will then speak for and represent the in-terests and views of the other fellow.”

— U.S. Senator Thad Cochran

Even if you’ve never run for office, evenif you don’t know much about politics orelections, you can still make a big differ-ence in the way Congress votes onlegislation affecting insurance and finan-cial services professionals.

How? By being an effective constituent.Nothing matters more to a member ofCongress than how his or her constitu-ents feel about issues they care about. Thatold adage about the customer always be-ing right is even more true with electedofficials. Their customers — the voters —are always right!

To stay in office, legislators must do agood job representing the interests andviews of those they were elected to serve. They value the input of knowledgeableand concerned constituents like you. Thatgives you a lot of clout! Clout that canhave a big impact on matters that affectyou and your clients.

Active, informed constituents commu-nicating directly with their members ofCongress — that’s what APIC (AdvisorsPolitical Involvement Committee) is allabout. Your involvement can range fromresponding to NAIFA Action Alerts onlegislation affecting your business, sign-ing up as a legislative contact for NAIFA(if you personally know a member of Con-gress), or serving as a Federal Senate orHouse Coordinator and holding regularmeetings in the district with your legisla-tor. The level of involvement is up to you.

To sign up as a legislative contact, com-plete and return the APIC form on thispage or contact [email protected] at the APICOffice at NAIFA for further informationand assistance.
