Jesus said, ‘The Kingdom of God is as if someone would scatter seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise, night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.”

Some of the seed we have been scattering has begun to sprout and grow. We received word from Blair Batty, our Organ Builder, that there was available to us a Roger’s organ console that would replace the present console, resolving several issues. The old stops needed replacing, some playing keys are damaged, and the new console would be considerably smaller than the old one, allowing us more room on the platform for the choir. At first, we said no, but then the owner of the console had a spouse who heard of us, and said, “Give it to them, we need the room!”

The Council met, and a decision was made to take up this offer. The organ console is now in Simcoe, being prepared for installation at Laidlaw. The Council agreed that we would use $2,500.00 from the Memorial Fund to get the console refitted and brought to Laidlaw, and additional $1,000.00 will need to be raised from the congregation to complete the installation. The installation will include moving the console to a new location, so the way is cleared to rebuild the platform, as well as saving the cost of moving the old console, and then needing a new console. We believe this work will be done sometime before the end of the year.

Nothing worth doing is ever easy, or quick. We hope this first step will get us closer to accomplishing all we hope for, or at least a good portion of what we hope for. Donations to help with the cost of this renovation, by memorial or otherwise, are most welcomed. We hope that by the late fall, and certainly by Christmas, the choir loft will be much more accessible, the children story will be taking place on the new platform, with the children facing the congregation, and the Sunday School Pageant will be on the new platform.

As always, it will depend on the seeds of hope we have been scattering taking root in the hearts and minds of those who support and enjoy the work of God’s Kingdom we are doing at Laidlaw, and offering funds, muscles, brains and intelligence so that we can complete the project within our means. We are, day by day, planting the seeds that will lead us to a fully accessible church at Laidlaw!

The opportunities God provides are always a bit of a surprise, always a bit of a challenge, always a bit of a squeeze!

The Beacon, Volume XII, Number 2, June 2015 page 8

S ummer has arrived—a time for peace, joy, reflection,

beaches, sunshine, warmth, and VACATIONS!

I will always remember the years Shirley and I, along with Nick and Ben, decided we needed a ‘Vacation’.

One year, we stayed for a week at Algonquin Park in the “Tin Can”. United Church ministers were invited to spend a week in the “Can” if they would conduct the Sunday Worship at the theatre in Algonquin Park the week they stayed in the Can, as well as be on call as chaplain. But the Can was free—an ancient Airstream Trailer on blocks. We saw beavers and bugs and trees, and the little organ at the theatre was full of a nest of mice. And we spent a fortune on groceries and a canoe rental—another week’s rent, and I would have bought it outright.

A few years back, Shirley and I and Nick and Ben decided we needed a ‘Vacation’ and booked a ‘holiday home’ at the beach at Lake Erie, hoping for some peace and quiet. We ended up getting a sun burn, a golf cart (it was so far between everything), and if we wanted a spot on the beach, we needed to get to the beach before seven in the morning. When people at the beach started taking off more clothes that we were expecting, it was time to go home.

The moral of my story is this. Jesus might have, occasionally, got into a boat and ‘crossed to the other side’, or ‘went away into the wilderness’—even Jesus felt the need for a ‘vacation’. But Jesus always came back to the people clamouring to be healed and taught and fed and cared about.

Vacations, at least for me, have been a reminder that I like where I usually find myself. I love the work we do, and the people we do it with. In the summers these last few years, I have been taking ‘mini vacations’, away for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and back at Laidlaw from Thursday to Sunday. I feel like it’s the best of both worlds—and it saves air conditioning the church office for the summer months.

We all need a time when we slow down, and reflect on our lives, and rest. But the best Vacations have reminded me—I want to GO HOME! I want to sleep in my own bed, and enjoy the familiar people and graces unique to our corner of the world in East Hamilton.

I hope you find, in these next few months, both the vacation you need, and the reminder that home, actually, is a pretty good place, after all. Have fun, but remember, we’ll be at Laidlaw any Sunday this summer that you’re around home. Join us for Worship, Sunday School and Coffee Hour, prayer conditioned and air conditioned, we’d love to see you!

Enjoy your Summer—at home, and away! God is with us, we are not alone—let us seek each other’s company in this Summer Season,

and find the rest and repair and progress we need to live as God’s people in a world that clamours to be healed, and taught, and fed, and cared about. We’ll find our way, one way or another. God’s grace is at work in us, and in others; God’s Spirit livens and refreshes!

Rev. Doug Moore, Lovin’ it at Laidlaw...all summer long!
