Division of Enrollment and Student Services

WelcomeDear Colleagues and Friends,

Welcome to the 26th Annual Nakama Conference! This year, we cast our eyes ahead: in the Next Five Years, change is coming to Western:

• The incoming student population will be more diverse than ever before: how do we develop our professional skills to better serve the next five years of students?

• The largest age demographic in the country is approaching retirement: how can entry-level and mid-level professionals prepare themselves to take advantage of new leadership opportunities?

• The technology available to us is changing rapidly: how can we use technology strategically to improve our collaboration, assessment, and service of students while keeping ourselves safe in a cyber-world that is growing more dangerous?

• Our resources seem to be shrinking even as our workloads seem to be growing: how do we learn to take care of ourselves and each other, to keep our community strong and our quality of service stronger?

Yes, change is coming, faster and more furious than ever before. As colleagues, as a community, as a Circle of Friends, we come together today to prepare ourselves and each other for The Next Five Years. Today’s conference is about Navigating Change: Leadership, Technology, and Self Care. It is your opportunity to take a step back from your everyday work, take a deep breath, connect with your colleagues, and prepare for what the Next Five Years will bring.

We want to thank our Nakama Planning committee, our presenters, our student staff, our donors, and everyone who worked to make this event happen. Most of all, our thanks to You for being here. Welcome to Nakama!

Nakama History and Mission

The Nakama tradition began in 1989 under the leadership of then Vice President and Director of Student Affairs, Saunie Taylor. Following the extraordinary events of 1987 in which three key university personnel were tragically killed in an aircraft accident, the Division perceived a need to pull together.

Jack Smith, Director of Student Activities, suggested the Division develop a conference utilizing its own people as resources for sharing ideas and for presenting to each other. Thus Nakama was conceived and developed.

The mission of Nakama is to provide attendees - Division members and our special guests - with opportunities to further develop skills, knowledge, and relationships relevant to their work and to leave feeling rejuvenated and motivated. Our intended learning outcomes for Nakama 26:

1. Develop knowledge and skills to enhance leadership abilities, technology usage and work-life balance

2. Explore emerging trends in technology and potential foruse by division members

3. Review professional development and technologytraining supports available on campus

4. Experience self-care activities and practice skills forwork-life balance

5. Learn about campus programs that support theemerging demographics of the students we will serve inthe next 5 years

6. Rekindle a sense of community, connection andcollaboration between division members

Nate PaneloNate grew up in the Pacific Northwest, and awkwardly enjoys cloudy and 70 degrees as ideal weather. He attended WWU as an undergraduate and became a well-known student in the ESC and was elected Associated Students VP for Activities. Nate has a BA in Human Services through Woodring College and a Masters in Higher Education in Student Affairs Administration at the University of Vermont (go Catamounts!). Nate worked two years as Resident Director at Seattle University and was hired at Western to run the ESC. He is now in his 3rd year (received the NASPA Region V Outstanding New Professional Award in 2013) and having a blast at his alma mater. Other things to know about Nate: he is a self-disclosed nerd, video game enthusiast, and a Lord of the Rings fan. Lastly, Nate won a contest and flew to Orlando to play against Cam Newton (Quarterback of the Carolina Panthers) in new Madden 15 video game, beating the professional QB by 2 points playing as the Seattle Seahawks… GO HAWKS!
