The Next Door Inc.

2010 was an incredible time for The Next Door, Inc. When the year began I never would have imagined that our 10 year old dream of finding a new building in Hood River would come true. On May 21, 2010, we purchased a 12,000 square foot building that had housed a video store for the past 20 years. The permit, design and renovation process has been quick and exciting and we will be fully moved in by early 2011.

This exciting growth was matched by contin-ued successes in our 24 programs. The Next Door was not immune to the economic downturn but with frugality and foresight, the programs were able to continue throughout the year with little noticeable change. This was fortuitous given the amount of need that keeps increasing in our community. We are proud to be entering our 40th year of serving children and families.

ENRICHING Big Brothers Big Sisters changes the lives of good children who are in challenging circumstances. Volunteer ‘Bigs’ offer friendship and support with the goal of helping their ‘Little’ stay on a healthy path that will lead them to a bright future. These relationships help “Littles” do better in school and at home, and make them less likely to use drugs or turn to violence to solve problems.

“Since “Franny” has had a Big Sister she has changed in many ways. Her self-confidence came up. She gets her school work done now. Her grades used to be bad, but on her last report card, she got A’s, B’s and C’s.” ~Franny’s mom

“Our foster child, “Lena,” was removed from her home due to neglect. She needed positive role models, so we asked for a Big Sister for her. Since then, she talks about a future much brighter than she expected before. She wants to go to college! She is learning that there is so much more out there for her.” ~Lena’s foster mom and dad

“Cal and I got acquainted on a cold wintry day. We went out to Rowena Lake and skipped rocks, then went home to my backyard, set up a camp stove and made bacon and eggs together. Cal had never cooked like that, and said, 'I could just eat this all day long!' ” ~Dan, “Big Brother”

“Maggie’s parents have been in and out of jail, mostly due to drug addiction. She was amazed when she would have a meal with me and eat until she was full. Her attitude about the fu-ture is changing. In 2010, the Hood River Parks District asked Nuestra Voz, Nuestra Salud (Our Voice, Our Health) to help bring the voice of the Latino community to the planning of a community park in Odell, Oregon.

Latino community members were invited to share opinions about the design of the park during meetings held at local businesses and schools. The project was funded in full and the Park District credits this collaboration with it’s success.

The Next Door’s Summer Youth Employ-ment Program (SYEP) employed 23 young people for nine weeks to help maintain trails and guide tourists around our beautiful waterfalls. It’s a win for The Next Door to be able to help youth learn a positive work ethic, it’s a win for our Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to have help, and it’s a win for the youth to be active and earn some money. “The most important thing I learned was how to work in teams.” “The best part of this job was meeting new people and getting to know them.” “My favorite memory from this job was the canoeing project. Watching every-body work hard at the same time as playing hard made me happy.” “The best part of this job is getting a habit of being more outdoors.”
